Why do they seperate the top six from the bottom six when there are a few games left to go? Seems so pointless to me...

Thats basicly it,

If they play each other 4 times then thats 44 games, so they play each other 3 times, split the league in half and play 5 more games making 38 in all. Confused, yeh so am I

Its also so that the last 5 games are really exciting. It means the top 6 teams all play each other, and this year it will probably mean the last Champions League spot (2nd) will be down to the wire.
It's stupid the way that if 7th gets more points than 6th then the places don't change because of the halving though.
Yeah, but then they've played worse teams. If your not in the top 6 after 33 games, I suppose you don't deserve to be!

It also gives teams a feeling of achievement. It's usually a given that Celtic and Rangers will challenge for the title and the other other champions league spot - although not this year. To finish in the top 6 means another of the teams has had a good season, to not finish there means they haven't.

One more game against both sides of the old firm is financially lucrative too so it really gives the middling teams something to fight for after Christmas.

Course this year, as has happened before, Celtic won the title before the split happened :D
