It's a very early 70's-looking chart following the death of Tony Wilson, the original Hot Chocolate main vocalist, and songwriter with Errol Brown. Tony sadly left the band after producer/record owner Mickie Most decided Errol was a better frontman in 1975. I was a big fan from day one, loved I Believe (In Love after I just got back from 2 years in Singapore, and eventually got the single for Christmas after dad couldnt find a copy in Singapore to bring back for me. So, 55 years on it returns to my number one for a second week, still love the upfront percussion-heavy shuffle sound and Tony and Errol's vocals. Just behind, Brother Louie is back after going top 10 in 1973 at a new peak of 2. The track was ground-breaking in its day, and stolen by US band The Stories for the hit there, to much less effect as a white band as opposed to a multi-racial outfit. Happily Hit Chocolate broke through with Emma the following year anyway, and that's top 10 again too. 1972's You'll Always Be A Friend hit 3 in 1972 for me, and is back at 30, with You Could've Been A Lady charting for the first time lower down at 78.

This is bad timing for The Osmonds' One Bad Apple which topped the US charts, and flopped in the UK, criminally in 1971, presumably they held off release until the animated TV show debuted, but it sounds like a Jackson 5 record, for good reason - it was written for them but they opted for the much weedier ABC instead, so it all worked out well for Merrill and Donny as co-leads on the track, pre-voice-breaking Donny really gives it his all. Still his best vocal performance. Leaping to 3, one slot behind the 1988 re-issue which peaked at 2. Marshmello and Portgual. The Man go top 5, and Squeeze get a first top 10 slot in 10 years, since Nirvana topped my chart, and 48 years on from Take Me I'm Yours hitting 3.

Lower down, the new Michael Jackson bio movie gives me an excuse to re-chart the number 2 peaking Jackson 5 ballad Never Can Say Goodbye, from 1971, I loved it even before Gloria Gaynor transformed it into an early disco classic in 1974. In at 77, while Haircut 100 have a new song in at 79, Come Back To Me, which they did at Poole Lighthouse last Sunday. They were fab too, funky, energetic and enthusiastic and the odd new track as good or better than the Pelican West album tracks - way more jazzed up than any band apart for 40 years has a right to be! It's their 6th charted hit since 1981, and second in the last year, though Nick Heyward has loads more solo, and Blair Cunningham has more as drummer of the mid 80's Pretenders.

Lainey Wilson drops in with a great country track, Can't Sit Still, at 80, having charted Heart Like A Truck 3 years ago. Nelly Furtado is back for a second track in 6 months, it seems to be for the forthcoming World Cup football matches based in Canada, but you wouldnt know it. Electric Circus is a dance banger at 87, in my further extended charts. Blue make it 3 good singles in a row on Flowers at 89, extending the run to 27 years, incredibly. It seems way less than that. Madonna meanwhile gets a second new dance track in a collab with Sabrina Carpenter, Bring Your Love being her 3rd of the year. Not bad for nearly 68. Sabrina's on 3 this year too. Keith Urban is back again for a 9th year of charting, and this time he has Michael McDonald as guest vocalist. You wait years for a guest spot from the Doobie Brothers man and suddenly he's on 2! It'd been 47 years since What A Fool Believes debuted. There's also another tribute Ronettes oldie debut for a third on the chart.

Hi John!

Really like Hot Chocolate's catalogue of classics, however my favourite from them is "It Started With A Kiss", very underrated in my opinion. Nice to see the new peaks for "To Love Somebody", "5am", "Stay", "Chuck The Money", "Carry On", "Be With You", "Undefeated Champion", "Free To Love", "House Tour" and "Sledgehammer", the big gains for "Beauty Pageant", "I Feel So Free", "Mr. Know It All" and "First Light" and the debut for "Bring Your Love".

Great chart!

Take care.

Hi DaTilt! 🙂, thanks for the Hot Choc appreciation, I also love both of those - they each topped my personal charts at the time, though the sultry middle eastern sounds of Put Your Love In Me are forgotten these days. Sadly! I assume it's the lyrics being offputting for radio, though it shouldnt be compared to 21st century lyrics! Errol wrote them, so maybe he was trying to say something...

cheers! 😎

Hi AH! 😎

No need apologise, and ooh sorry to hear about the hospital visit, it makes one feel ill just visiting them once never mind twice, I hope you are feeling OK and making the most of the time off, have some flowers belatedly! 🌹🪻🌺👍Yes all good here ta, I could do with more hours in a day as always - I will never stop thinking that, I guess, too much I want to do, so much I need to do but dont want to 😄

Thanks for all the in-depth picks, and comments of course! Emma is a good choice of fave single, very dark and haunting, and more interesting than the endlessly popular "I belive In Miracles" as many call it 😄Tony Wilson was so annoyed when he left Hot Chocolate after being told to take a back seat - despite being co-songwriter - that he told Errol to keep the sole credit for You Sexy Thing which had just been the B side to a flop single at that point. Oops! Glad you like Rumours too, it suffered from being a bit similar to Brother Louie I think, but it's great in its own right.

Watch Project Hail Mary and then re-chart Sign Of The Times, it's a key moment in the film, and makes total sense in the context of it. 👍After the week you had its not surprising you forgot to chart some of the current goodies! Eek! I have to write songs down as I hear them if I want to buy them (and chart them) or I WILL forget oops! 😄

I dont see Madonna/Sabrina hanging around either but at least she gets another decade as lead act to notch up a top 40 - 5 in a row and 67 years old is pretty good.

thanks as always! Take it easy 😎
