Year 01: New Girl In Town

It was the year 2008. A 19-year old Conderella with very low-intermediate English was less-than-one-year fresh on the English-speaking forum scene and finally brave enough to explore other parts of Buzzjack besides Personal and UK Charts. The humiliation from not understanding how things work around here and posting her own personal chart in the comments of another user’s Personal Chart was still lingering in the air. A little forum named BJSC caught her eye. A song competition where you play Eurovision not just once a year but TEN?! She immediately signed up and founded a country - Eledan (changed to Elëdan shortly) that she named after a singer that was all the rage at that time - Adele. She was 3 months late to the party so she didn’t know what to expect. One thing she knew is that the first 3 winners were all women so she decided to enter a fellow Russian artist she liked - Polina Gagarina - who several years later went to represent them at the actual Eurovision and shortly after proclaimed her support for P*tin. Oops. P*lina came dead last.

Conderella could have never expected what was about to happen next month. What was supposed to be a way to say sorry, she sent the song “Gomenasai” (meaning “I’m sorry” in Japanese) by an unknown Russian band called Tatu. To her surprise, this landslided (landslid? landslide? landslidden?) into a massive win with a 40% lead over the 2nd place. Winning her second ever contest against Girls Aloud, Sugababes, M.I.A. at the peak of her career with Paper Planes, Taylor Swift and Yelle?! Before Conderella could process this, it was time to host BJSC 6. Elëdan went ahead and played tribute to Adele who was after all the inspiration for the country’s name. ‘Hometown Glory’ was selected and it finished 12th overall. The total number of participants grew only from 27 to 29 so the Semifinal was also scrapped.

BJSC 6 was won by Quotosibb who were the first country to have debuted at number one, sent a British singer who is also the first black winner of BJSC, and with a live version of the song. Maybe it was Beverley Knight’s talent or maybe it was Conderella’s stellar hosting that attracted a huge wave of new countries joining in droves the following month. Mirroring Eurovision, for the first time ever, the two Semifinal format was introduced.

“How will I ever achieve the highs of that win again?”, she thought to herself, inputting LEAVEMEALONE in GTA Vice City.

‘I Bruise Easily’ by Natasha Bedingfield was her next choice. Having given her 12 to Imogen Heap’s ‘Headlock’, Conderella ultimately finished 19th that month. But in retrospect, that contest in particular was everyone’s to lose from the beginning. Except Mdiče who managed to snatch ‘I Kissed A Girl’ and win, with Lady Gaga’s obscure album track ‘Just Dance’ in the distant 2nd place.

By that time male artists have been occasionally successful in the contest but never won so Conderella decided to try something new. Perhaps inspired by another Russian of Eurovision fame in BJSC 7, Dima Bilan, finishing 5th, she entered Sergey Lazarev (who will, coincidentally, also go to Eurovision twice in the next 11 years). Lazarev will go on to become the highest placed solo male artist in that Final finishing… second-to-last. Charli XCX’s MySpace song appeared here and crashed in the Semifinals along with Kate Bush and ABBA. 2026 Buzzjack would gasp in horror.

Even though BJSC 8 proved to be iconic in the worst possible ways, it was time for Conderella to get her head in the game. All these cheap whores are winning but none of her risks were paying off. It was time for Romanian Eurodance! BJSC 9 was once again a clean sweep but this time by a Norwegian singer Margaret Berger (who went on to represent Norway in Eurovision a few years later with her incredible pussy eating anthem) and Pink came only 2nd. Margaret was one of the most popular winners, if not THE most popular winner, for a long time after BJSC 9. Conderella was taking notes. Morandi finished 17th. In the grand scheme of things, out of 44 entries, this was technically a hit. But of course she wanted to win.

Super coincidentally, in BJSC 10 Conderella decided to enter a Norwegian female singer - Maria Mena - with whom she placed 13th. Succumbing to the pressure and sending female artists worked! The actual contest turned out to quite uneventful. Almost the entire Top 10 was filled with songs everyone knew before except one song that shortly went to become Conderella’s first multiple-week Personal Chart topping BJSC discovery - Camille’s ‘Money Note’. This was the first and last time Elëdan would give a 12 to the same song alongside Ashton (Republique d’Àskorza) and FSR Rontvia. The latter also sent one of their most iconic entries - ‘Headhunted’ by Mira Craig. Also super coincidentally Norwegian!

This year ended on a good note, not exactly the Money Note for Elëdan’s bank but their 3rd best placement and second most points received. And of course the effects of the win were still being felt. Conderella knew that only Aeroche are allowed to complain when they haven’t had more than three Top 3s including a win in 2 years, so she stayed positive and looked ahead. Because another surprise was awaiting her right around the corner…

Sidenote: i totally forgot you're Conderella. I've just known you as DAB for the longest time so I subconsciously felt like Conderella was a completely different person lmao

Edit: I guess your name is dab now. That's what I get for using voice to text lmao
