27th September 2026

It's a post-holiday-in-Catalonia chart, with some comebacks and climbs from tracks I heard out and about, and a new chart-topper from Miley Cyrus grabs a 7th number one with the fab Redlights. Miley is now clear of Coldplay in the battle for Most Number Ones by acts debuting in the 21st Century, and her great album tracks/future singles continue to under-perform since the one-off that was Flowers. Redlights needs to be a proper single. Madonna gets a 3rd top 10 of the year as the sad Fragile climbs to 8, a touching tribute to her late brother, which makes it Madonna's best year for top 10's since 2015 when she got 5 of 'em.

Rosalind Ashford-Holmes sadly passed away last week, one of Martha & The Vandellas during their heyday, so in tribute the 2 greatest Motown tracks by the band that have never charted for me before both debut - Heatwave at 14, one of the great dance tracks of the decade, still exciting and one I discovered during the Mod-revival era in the late 70's and 80's, and Jimmy Mack at 38 which I managed to miss charting twice despite liking it and knowing it in the 60's. Great song. Love them both.

Among the tracks I heard in El Piano video bar in Sitges were 2 biggies I under-rated earlier in the year, Bruno's I Just Might and Ella Langley's Be Her so they bounce back, while giving boosts to Carly Rae Jepsen's Dancefloor and Miley Cyrus' Bass Persuades. Dolly Parton's 9 To 5 also got a play and the ladies in the bar all got excited to jump up and sing along, so it gets a first comeback chart appearace since 1981 for the late great Dolly, and increases chart tracks here to 6. Simple Minds sneak in with new track Beginner Boys at 100, meanwhile, and extend their chart run to 44 years.

Best new entry bubbling under ; The Simple Minds 💪

Hi John,

nice to see some classics from Martha & The Vandellas. Lily still holding strong. 🙂

A quite quiet week with mainly older songs coming in. Check out Holly Humberstone's new song - it is another great one from her.

One further recommendation from my charts

This is great synth-pop reminding me a bit of "I'm Deranged" from David Bowie in parts.

Hi John. Hope you've had a good week. Terrible news about Catalonia, happy you're safe though of course. As usual my week has not been as eventful, although I nearly destroyed my leg again at work. They keep going on about "health and safety" whilst not doing anything whatsoever to improve working conditions. Only 10 more weeks though before my extended Christmas break. I'm counting down the seconds. Anyway, my faves:

Hi DaTilt!

Thanks for the tips and comments! I dont know the Bowie track you mention (just checked it out, drum n bass Bowie era, it's decent), but Pierre's is nicely 80's-ish. Holly Humberstone is always good. Too Cute To Be Lonely is a goodie too!

cheers! 😎

Fantastic chart as always ❤️

Hi AH! 🙂

Thanks for the wishes, the worst I got though was to wade through 2 or 300m of almost ankle-high mud in bare feet to save my lovely new trainers 😄and then half a mile in mud-caked bare feet, bloody painful walking on bits of gravel! 😇I can't believe you are still having near-things at work!! They need a kick up the arse 🦵!

Glad you rate the Martha Vandellas tracks, I could have sworn I'd charted both of them before but apparently not! Dannii's is fab and of course no chance of being a hit. If 14-year-olds dont stream it..... Primal Scream is just the original version which was selling for some reason the other week, it's just I never realised it was The Emotions first time round doing the "I don't want to lose your love" bit - among all the other samples! I tend not to credit samples unless it's a vocal sample, to me that's at least as good a reason as a brief guest rent-a-rapper (RIP on that these days at least) or Nile Rodgers bass-line credit!

Poor you on the bruno mars torture! That's inhuman! 😄I havent heard it much since it fell out my charts, and the video was fun in a late night bar El Piano with jovial atmosphere as a two-night thing. The owner is Bjorn Rosier formally in Belgian boyband Boysband and who has competed to represent Belgium at Eurovision 3 times - sadly didnt get through I think! He has good taste in music too, apart from picking Bruno to spite you - Miley, Carly Rae Dancefloor, Be Her, great cinema tracks from musicals like America, and a bunch of obscure stuff I can't find out what they were (I've tried!).

thanksas always on the picks and chat! 😎
