It appeared in the film Velvet Goldmine which was popular at the time. Was surprised they didn't make it a double A-side, but I guess the band weren't so keen to push a song that wasn't on their album.

Interesting that Radio 1 had Placebo's cover of '21st Century Boy' on the A-list, which was a b-side of the actual single at the time (You Don't Care About Us)

I wonder what spurred that decision?

Radio 1 A-listed both at the same time (although sharing the airtime), but this exact week I posted, they dropped "You Don't Care About Us"

'Smoke' on the A-list, what a song 1998 was such an incredible year for pop, indie AND dance, good to see so much of it on the playlist! Back then I had Radio 1 on pretty much all day!

  • yea honestly some of the songs they're currently not adding are very weird. we could easily see songs like these here: Barry Can't Swim x Sammy Virji - I Could Be Madonna Bebe Rexha - One Day D.O.D x

'Strong Enough' was strongly supported, 'All Or Nothing' was decently, the 4th single from that album was snubbed and the 2001 lead single was totally ignored by them!

Kinda what I thought!

Actually from the playlists it seems All Or Nothing got more support than Strong Enough, at least it made the B-list

Was Cher the last pre R1 artist to be dropped?

Tom Jones got in the playlist in 2000

Edit: probably Paul McCartney with the Rihanna colab

Did Radio 1 not play Aerosmith, or had it been and gone by that point for them?

The fact that Corrie actor Matthew Marsden feat. Destiny's Child was a thing always makes me laugh.

I remember that Swirl 360 song, bit of a flop in the end along with that Karen Ramirez follow up.

I think what strikes me is how many successful bands were active then and having hit singles, not just the teen pop bands but also Aerosmith/Cardigans/Corrs/Beautiful South/Placebo/Dru Hill/REM and the rest. It is a bit sad that self contained bands struggle so much for hits now, although Fontaines DC have done quite well recently.

Of course!

Yeh I think they still do really well in the live scene it just doesn’t translate organically into the chart due to Spotify playlists being world wide or US centric. Blossoms are another example of a huge British band who don’t have singles chart success. When they are huge bands of this era in my eyes.

As for Aerosmith I was wondering the same as they’re on the R2 playlist. The chart run would suggest that it was a hit that did well and had chart stability due to the film being huge and not a traditional ‘held back’ release like a lot of pop acts of the time. Here’s the chart run out of interest at a time when this type of run became extinct in the first Q of 1996 (and had been turning to this strategy since the late 80s):

12/09/1998

Aerosmith

I forgot Tom Jones also returned in 2006 with Chicane in "Stoned In Love"

That was a banger!

I went back all the way to August and it seems "I Dont Want To Miss A Thing" was snubbed on Radio 1. At least on the official playlists anyway. Which is odd. Back then there was quite a bit of an overlap between Radio 1 and Radio 2

I'm not surprised, Aerosmith weren't really a very R1-friendly band (even though 'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing' wouldn't have sounded too out of place).

It would've fit well though, considering R1 were A-list The Corrs, The Cardigans, Lighthouse Family, Savage Garden, etc.

Maybe they were seen as too "old"?

I don’t buy that, their first hit was 12 years prior to that in 1986 and at the same time Cher was one of the biggest hits of the year!

Their first UK hit, perhaps - but they were still big in America since the early 70s. I imagine their earlier hits were well known in the UK by the late 90s?

seems Meja "All About The Money" was snubbed too by both Radio 1 and Radio 2, although it was in the 40s on the airplay chart. MTV supported it so it helped too.

Given the talk around retro playlists regularly exceeds or is close to that of the current weekly playlist, I do wonder if a separate thread should be started for them rather than including them in the current weekly playlist thread?

It's a nice idea but it would need to be consistent for it to be maintained in its own thread as I've liked the sporadic nature in here. Its own thread could be a "This week in XXXX year" and would need a commitment to posting some significant/popular years for instance. On the other side, I would be here for the years that pre-date this forum

Tune of the Weeks:

Vicky Hawkesworth: Olga Myko - I Don't Have Any Problems

Greg James: BICEP x Lauren Duffus x SOARR - GAS

Charlie + Jerry: LISA - Tarantino

Matt + Mollie: Holly Humberstone - Too Cute To Be Lonely

Katie + Friends: Rachel Chinouriri - Pretty girls

Vicky’s in for Mylo & Rosie all week.

This is a great sign for Holly, first time for this song as TOTW, LISA will definitely be on the playlist next week which how much support ‘Tarantino’ has gotten. No need for ‘Pretty girls’ but with how stacked last week was, i'm not all that mad.
