It's only 'cheesy' now by today's standards, back then, not so cheesy, because no one had ever seen anything like it before, so I dont think you can really judge it as being 'cheesy', because applying modern standards to something from the past is a bit pointless.... Of course when you have the likes of Dragonforce doing the same thing nowadays, that can be termed as cheesy (and not a little camp  )....

Okay, it's back..... After a long absence... I actually lost the bloody piece of paper which had the list on it...

Anyway, sorry folks, on with the show....

NUMBER 52 - COAL CHAMBER - FIEND

Coal Chamber suffered from rather unfavourable comparisons to Korn back in the day... Unjustly I feel, because they really sound nothing like Korn.... CC certainly benefitted from the success of Korn however, but kind of remain one of Nu Metal's forgotten bands, which is unfair because they certainly are a cut above the likes of Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park... This track is from their third and final album (and in many ways, their strongest) "Dark Days".. Frontman Dez Farfara later formed extreme metal band Devil Driver....

NUMBER 51 - JACK OFF JILL - MY CAT

In case you ever wondered who that cool chick Royston Poisoner had in her old sig was, it is none other than Jack off Jill frontwoman Jessicka..... JoJ benefitted from an association with Marilyn Manson, he produced much of their early material from the early 90s up until their first album "Sexless, Demons and Scars" in 1998, but this is not to say JoJ were Manson's little 'pet' band, far from it, they had an absolutely definitive sound of their own, whereas Manson was more concerned with gluing Metal, Industrial and Glam together, JoJ were much more raw and organic, more Punk and 'alternative', and yes, a bit 'Emo' (when 'Emo' wasn't the dirty word it is these days....) and a lot less contrived in how they approached their music and image than Manson, MCR and others are... Where JoJ share a common ground with Manson is in their desire to strip back the false veneer of America and expose the hypocrisy that lies underneath... Of course this is more obvious in songs like "American Made" and "Confederate Fag" than in this one.... They did two very good albums, the aforementioned "Sexless, Demons and Scars" (which this song is on) and "Clear Hearts, Grey Flowers", which I personally believe to be the stronger album, they really stretched themselves out musically on this and if it was an indication of where they were heading, it's a damn shame they split up.. A compilation of early material from '92-'97 came out called "Humid Teenage Mediocrity", the stuff which was recorded by Manson, it has lots of interesting demos, rare tracks and early versions of songs which would end up on the debut album... Jessicka would later form the pretty amazing Scarling, they sound nothing at all like JoJ, a very cool modern Alternative Rock band with shades of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth about them...

NUMBER 50 - OZZY OSBOURNE - Mr CROWLEY

Ahhhh, yes, Ozzy..... The very epitome of Metal in so many ways... The tales of this guy's exploits are absolutely legion... and it really has to be stressed that before all this "Osbournes" c**p, this guy was one of the coolest, most hard-core motherfukkers on the face of ther earth... People who judge Ozzy simply on that bloody awful programme are fukkin ignorant fools who know sod all about music, simple as; and I am fukkin' sick of even hearing about his b**ch of a wife and those bloody awful kids of his, whom, frankly, should have been drowned at sodding BIRTH!!!!! <_< <_< If he is a joke now, it is because he has been turned into one by the media.... His material with Black Sabbath and his early solo material are the absolute DOG'S BOLLOCKS and "Mr Crowley" would be a bloody great song in any universe... Later, post-90s solo stuff (anything after "No More Tears" SUCKS!!!!!) and the absolute dreck he's doing these days simply tarnish his reputation... This is it, the definitive Ozzy, with Randy Rhodes, one of the greatest guitarists of his generation (although Zakk Wylde is pretty damned good too....), forget all the c**p, forget the lousy TV show, and judge him on his music ffs.....

(and, oh my, hasn't young Matthew Bellamy rather ripped off this tune just a tad.....)

NUMBER 49 - QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - THE LOST ART OF KEEPING A SECRET

QOTSA's frontman Josh Homme certainly likes to keep fans confused, and frankly you kinda wonder whether QOTSA actually exist as a band in so many ways as there is a constant revolving door policy on members... Nirvana/Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl has been a guest sticksman for one album, then mainstay, bassist Nick Oliveri was sensationally fired from the band by Homme in 2004, and inbetween all this, Homme has himself been doing his other project Eagles of Death Metal.. ex-Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan has also been an on/off member as well... It is also useful to note that QOTSA started out life as a band called Kyuss, both Homme and Oliveri were members of this band..

NUMBER 48 - MOONSPELL - FINISTERRA (THE END OF THE WORLD)

Moonspell are a Portuguese band.... As their vocalist Fernando Ribiero puts it "About 95% of the music produced in Portugal is commercial Dance and Euro Pop, we are very unusual". Ribiero in various interviews has painted a picture of an incredibly stultifying, bland and frankly nightmarish contemporary musical scene in his native country.. This and the fact that the Portuguese Catholic Church has branded Moonspell and other Portuguese Metal as "Satanists" as well (and just when you'd thought we'd actually gotten beyond all that kind of bullsh!t....).. So, you can understand why they sound a mite hacked off... Also, the fact that Moonspell have been doing this whole Gothic/Metal hybrid for about 15 years now as well and not seeing much in the way of international success, while the sweet 'girly goth' Rock bands like Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence and Within Temptation race ahead of them (I suppose if Moonspell had a gorgeous girl fronting them, they'd sell more records..), well, that's another reason for them sounding hacked off... They dont usually sound as angry as this, the 'Death/Doom Metal' element is new and has come in with the "Memorial" album of 2006, and, y'know, I kinda like it to be honest, most other bands would take the easy option and cultivate a more mainstream sound, Moonspell have gone totally in the opposite direction, with a much more extreme, confrontational sound... I certainly loved their more melodic, gothic side, but there's a real urgency and a sense of raw anger to their new material, the injustice of being ignored while others get the attention has reinvigorated them....

NUMBER 47 - LEAVES' EYES - INTO YOUR LIGHT

And after me saying all that I said in the Moonspell post, I now opt for one of the very 'girly' goth rock bands..... Oh well, guess I'm a sucker for this whole 'sweet sounding female vocals' Gothic Rock thing..... Leaves' Eyes are a fairly new band, but before you go pigeonholing them in with the Nightwishes and the Within Temptations, there is one very important factor to take into consideration - Leaves' Eyes' frontwoman is Liv Kristine Espaenes, and she's been doing this sort of thing before Tarja, before Sharon and certainly before Amy in a different band - Theatre of Tragedy, who were around in the early 90s... Liv was ousted from that band in the early 00s because she was taking the band off in a Poppy, synthy, Garbage/Republica sounding direction.. She did a solo album which sounded even more Poppy (alarmingly almost Celine Dion-style big ballads.... :o ), and now Leaves' Eyes, which sees Liv actually going back to a more Gothic/Symphonic Rock sound... So, all a bit odd really, one wonders why she even went off on these divergent paths if she was just going to end up back sounding like her old band, only actually better in some ways....

And yes, rather unusually for a girl singer in these sorts of band, she is blonde..... Well, she is Scandinavian.....

Leaves' Eyes are really good. I think Elegy is their best song though.

I already know the JoJ song + video so I don't need to watch that.

I'll check the other songs out later after college.

I like "Elegy" as well, but "Into Your Light" was the first song I heard of theirs, so..... Have you got their albums...?

I was annoyed that I could only find this one, proper, JoJ video, I would've liked to have put up something like "Nazi Halo", "Strawberry Gashes", "Viveca" or "Afraid of Dying", but I was buggered if I was gonna put up some crappy 'anime' rip-off vid.....

NUMBER 46 - ARCH ENEMY - WE WILL RISE

Yes, another Metal band with a girl singer, blah, blah, whatever..... But this is no sweet little gothy girl, this is Angela Gossow - a full-on German Death Metal growler.... I think most Death/Black Metal bands are joke, there is an unbelievable air of campness about them, but Angela is not camp in any way whasoever, she sounds like she's genuinely pissed off about something (and if you know anything about her nightmarish childhood in a small town in Germany, where she was branded a whore and a Satanist just because she liked Metal. And, although she has never made it explicit, there's a sense that she has suffered some kind of physical or sexual abuse in her past ...), she sounds like she means every fukkin' word she's growling and it actually sounds like her life depends on making this music. As Nietsche once said "what does not kill you only makes you stronger", there is no doubting that Angela is a very strong character who has overcome whatever nightmare happened in her past, when she says the words "I can be anything I want to be", she aint faking it, she means every syllable. I love this song because it is a statement of intent, a real 'rabble-rousing' call to arms. Most other Death Metal bands don't seem to have this sense of urgency or realism about them, at all.. Or maybe this sort of music just sounds better coming from a woman... In any case, they rock, and I've included a live version of the tune as well just to prove that she can do this sh!t live... And she is seriously HOT as well..... There's just something I love about the way this girl sweats.... *ahem*, okay, I'll, erm, stop now....

NUMBER 45 - ALICE IN CHAINS - WOULD

The history of this band seriously reads like an open wound... Vocalist Layne Stayley battled a serious heroin addiction, this was a battle he would eventually lose and he died some years ago from an overdose.. The tragedy is, is that Stayley looked as though he was actually winning the battle.. Stayley wrote continually with regards to his addiction, making us both understand what went through a user's mind while scaring us sh!tless at the sheer hopelessness and despair of it all... I have never ever wanted to try heroin, and I reckon it was Alice In Chains that put me off even thinking about it the most. People say that Stayley glamourised heroin, what utter bullsh!t, clearly these people dont listen to what is being said in songs like "Junkhead" or "Godsmack"... Alice In Chains were probably the most gothic of the Grunge/Seattle generation of bands, they came from a much darker place than Nirvana or Pearl Jam.. "Would" is really their anthem and I reckon is a much better song than "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "Alive"...

I haven't, would you recommend any?

I think My Cat was the only video they did. I've never seen any others.

By the way, I've got into My Ruin. I bought three of their albums (the first three), they are really good! I like the song with Jessicka too.

Both "Lovelorn" (which has "Into Your Light") and "Vinland Saga" (which has "Elegy") are really good and worth having.... "Vinland Saga" is pretty cool, it's basically a concept album about Viking warriors, ancient lore, Norse Gods, etc.... Nice and epic stuff... Would make a good film actually...

My Ruin/Tarrie B are ace..... You should listen to Tairrie's other band before My Ruin as well - Tura Satana....

Don't Alice in Chains sing 'Them Bones'? B)

Don't Alice in Chains sing 'Them Bones'? B)

Yeah, but I prefer "Would"..... In any case "Dirt" is a fukkin' great Rock/Metal album, I think that defined the Grunge sub-genre a lot better than "Nevermind" or "10". It's a better album than either of them as far as I'm concerned anyway...

Keep listening though ChapStick, give me your opinions on the other stuff...
