Posted February 2, 200718 yr A few days ago, the Beautiful South announced their split. Never the most fashionable of groups and often overlooked, they still managed to be popular at times throughout their career, never more so than in 1994 when their Carry On Up The Charts best of album unexpectedly topped the Christmas album chart and sold exceptionally well. What thoughts does anyone have about them? Personally I thought they were great, but they were a bit of an enigma. I never knew whether to take them seriously. The music often undermined the cynicism of the lyrics, which were often quite brilliant observations on life and its tribulations. Any thoughts? Edited February 2, 200718 yr by Robbie

February 2, 200718 yr well true, their lyrics were quite good sometimes, but im not into lyrics, its the melody that gets me foremost.

I did like the Beautiful South's press release when they broke up "we split because of musical similarities". A typical pisstake of everything they ever did!
February 2, 200718 yr I think there's a thread on this in Culture Box. They were cool in the 90s though.
February 2, 200718 yr Every single release of their's both in terms of albums and singles were superb. They and lead singer Paul Heaton were pure genius. Enough said.
