Impossible Princess

R. M. Naytowhow--- a commentary ---

R. M. Naytowhow explains why the not so innocent mother of two, still, despite a seemingly endless barrage of bad press, is the undisputed princess of pop and her impossible shot at dethroning her Queen.

New York -- Great artists like Lennon sang about dreamers in "imagine" his commentary on war, one could only imagine what someone of his stature'd have to say about an unkempt Spears' wandering about NYC all hours of the night with her baby accessory SP (Sean Preston, for the uninitiated). Further managing to sully her teeny bop persona with her late night shenanigans.

Yes, folks. It would seem now like ages ago that this young mother of two, already twice divorced from Kentwood, Louisiana was the reigning pop commodity. Turning out hit after hit album, and singles, videos and tours, accompanied by carefully executed publicity stunts that straddled innocent with the obscene.

And so well, to the point that she was America's sweetheart. Someone who never crossed the line, but rather towed everyone to eventually succumb to her cuteness and likeable naivety, by walking it. (And tow she did to two diamond records, a pepsi endorsement, and numerous other feats)

She attained a level of celebrity so massive that she was later given the much vied-for Princess of pop moniker. It was only during her last studio album, "In The Zone" that Madonna comparisons seemed more and more acceptable. After all, her singles "Me Against The Music", the tween generations reimagining of Madonna's "Into The Groove" which Madge even appeared on as though to support this theory, and "Toxic", the ingenious Cathy Dennis number, which was accompanied by an amazing anime/spy themed action/adventure clip',dared any of her competitors to try and top it, were both indicative that not only did Spears' have her hand on this generations-attention deficit pop pulse, but that she was the defining figure of it.

Her personal image had never effected her sales up until her premature Greatest Hits album. Weakly titled: My Prerogative (The title referring to her cover of the Bobby Brown song)

Which, seemed more like a kiss-off to domesticity than a real effort.

Spears' since than has found herself on the recieving end of bad publicity (Her Vegas-quickie marriage, K-fed, child-seat drama, Paris pantyless escapades, etc...), though interestingly enough her music has been left untouched.

Attributed mainly to the fact that not many are willing to deny their impact on pop culture and the fact that they are excellent pop songs.

Many are speculating whether or not she'll comeback. The question is a no-brainer, yes.

Will her music be good enough? ditto. The fact remains through-out the course of her career, the pop vixen has only consistently proven critics wrong. Whether or not her albums were ever great is moot, when you consider that she's had many great singles, songs that only she could sing, with her insufferably subpar vocals, that with such unaffected conviction, transcend their limitations. Namely, her first and undeniable pop classic, "...Baby One More Time" it's sequel "Stronger", the mid-tempo hyper-sex number "I'm A Slave 4 U" and so on.

Britney Spears is an anomaly in pop culture. In that it is impossible to write her off because it is impossible to imagine the pop world without her. She is impossible in every regard. Could she ever be enough, to any one person?

Are we impossible in our expectations of her?

Blame this on her impossible nature of conforming. She retains her princess tiara with battlescars we can only imagine will somehow play themselves out in her fifth studio release.

But that's why America and the rest of the world can not look away. She's accomplished the impossible with her career -- against the insurmountable odds; against the assertions of no talent, she's made unforgettable and indispensable moments of brilliance, in her performances and music. If there is one thing we know about her, It's that she makes the impossible possible.
