Dolls show a few fireworks

Pop amazons The Pussycat Dolls brought their smash-hit European tour to a show-stopping, booty-shaking finale at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena last night.

Despite being one girl short, the remaining feisty five put on a dazzling show, packed with fireworks, gyrating dance routines and risque outfits, for a capacity crowd of over 10,000 screaming fans.

Barbados R&B sensation Rihanna kicked off the night with a raft of reggae-infused tunes, including her chart hit SOS, while setting the tone by taking the stage in what seemed little more than a swimsuit.

And she was followed in full force by the diminished Dolls - lead singer Nicole and backing singers/dancers Melody, Carmit, Jessica, Ashley - who wowed their audience with a mix of covers including Tainted Love and even Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love as well as their own Buttons, The Beep Song and finishing on a high note with their biggest claim to fame so far, Don't Cha.

Despite accusations of miming in the past, it was clear that the girls really can sing, as Nicole demonstrated her astonishing vocal range.

She wasn't alone as the other girls took turns to show off their singing talents as well as some very lithe dancing.

Missing from the line-up was Kimberley, who was forced to abandon the tour due to ill health.

But despite being one down, the girls gave their everything, leaving fans buzzing with excitement - and looking forward to more from PCD in 2007.

Dolls simply Purr-fect!

Feb 7 2007

By Amy Eckersley, The Evening Chronicle

The Pussycat Dolls ended their tour in Newcastle last night at the Metro Radio Arena. Amy Eckersley went along.

The Pussycat Dolls were, in their own words, sassy but classy when they came to Toon.

The six-piece band, minus one who is ill back home in America, ended their first headline tour at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena.

The venue was packed full, predominately with teenage girls donning luminous bunny ears, or, on second thoughts, could they have been pussycat ears?

That would make more sense.

The set list was a mix of new, old, and very old.

The band, lead singer Nicole and backing singers Melody, Carmit, Jessica and Ashley (Kimberley's the one who's ill), included covers such as Fever, Tainted Love and Whole Lotta Love.

But what the crowd was really waiting for was their chart-topping hits - and they weren't disappointed.

They kicked things off with Buttons, followed by another favourite, Beep.

The girls broke up their set with inspiring messages to the crowd, touching on their rise to fame from lowly beginnings as table dancers, giving the crowd useful hints and tips like "stay in school" and "follow your dreams".

It was one of Nicole's speeches about being wronged by an ex-boyfriend that led up to I Don't Need a Man, which was met by squeals from the young crowd.

The best reception of the night was reserved for another of their massive hits, Stick Wit U, and the blockbuster gig was rounded off in true style with favourite Don't Cha.

The crowd had been warmed up by R&B act Rhianna, whose own medley of hits including SOS and We Ride were also well-received.

Her performance was more about the elaborate moves of her dancers than her singing, which I'm not sure she was actually doing.

Between the two acts, a DJ from Brooklyn, New York, kept things going with a selection of chart tunes and some crowd interaction for good measure.
