Posted March 9, 200718 yr Is your favourite Arnie, Sly or maybe Bruce? What about Sigourney Weaver, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Harrison Ford, Sean Connery or Clint Eastwood. Who are your favourite action stars.
March 9, 200718 yr Excluding the likes of Robert De Niro and Gene Hackman as I count his movies as drama not action I would say : In order 1) Samuel L Jackson 2) Jean Reno 3) Arnold Schwarzenegger 4) Denzel Washington 5) Tommy Lee Jones Edited March 9, 200718 yr by Vic Vega

I reckon John Travolta has probably done more action films than those guys... To qualify as an "Action Film" star you really have to have done a higher ratio of Action Films than any other genre... So, on that level, looking at actual bodies of work, Washington certainly does not qualify, and neither does Jean Reno.... Samuel L Jackson..? Debatable... My Favourites, in no real order tbh - 1. Chow Yun Fat 2. Jet Li 3. Jackie Chan 4. Michelle Yeoh 5. "Beat" Takeshi Kitano 6. Hugh Jackman 7. Big Arnie 8. Tony Leung 9. Ziyi Zhang 10. Bruce Lee And, yeah, I realise that there are a lot of HK names in there, but really the HK action film Industry makes 'Action Cinema' of the purest variety in so many ways...

SLJ has been in a lot of action movies though although a lot of them were not that great lol, some of his I would describe as action : Snakes On A Plane Die Hard 3 Long Kiss Goodnight Negotiator Area 51 or whatever it was called where he wore a kilt Shaft Basic S.W.A.T I see where you are coming from but I think he has done enough :) Denzel has done things like : Crimson Tide Courage Under Fire The Siege Training Day Man On Fire ok he is not as such an action star but I enjoyed all the action movies he has been in Same with Jean Reno Ronin Leon (one of my 5 fave movies of all time) Godzilla Mission Impossible ok they are not established action stars in the way Arnie, Sly would be considered action stars but they had been in enough action movies I liked so included them :)
March 10, 200718 yr Bruce Willis in his Die Hard era. Not really too fussed about action films, but I followed him to the screen as a lover of Moonlighting! I still double-check the lift in my block before I get in it because of him!

It's set mainly on a submarine, not much room for running about and gunfights really... it's really more about the tension between the Washington character and the Gene Hackman character, achieved through dialogue mainly, than it is about 'big action sequences' "Training Day" - Police/Thriller, again very dialogue-heavy, not really much 'action' tbh, another character study/conflict between the 'mentor' (Washington) and the 'apprentice' (Ethan Hawke) "Courage Under Fire" - again, "War/Drama" "Action Films" are a specific genre, and have to have certain things going on within the narrative to really qualify... Reno, again, has 'dabbled' with the Action genre, "Ronin" is perhaps the purest 'action' role he has undertaken, "Leon" has far more going on in its narrative to be merely labeled an "action film"..
March 10, 200718 yr Arnie and Sly, loved films like Demolition Man, Comando, Judge Dread, Terminator (1 and 2), Rambo (all 3), Total Recall etc etc as a 12 year old kid. Bruce Lee is also ACE Wesley Snipes for Blade and demolition man. thats about it.

I have always had a policy that if it blows the hell out of my surround system through lots of gunfire or car chases its an action movie :P Its a good point you make though Scott, it is interesting what an action movie is and what criteria is needed for a film to be an action movie as opposed to a drama or a thriller
March 10, 200718 yr Some films don't just fit one genre. Alot of war films will fit under action too.
March 10, 200718 yr Some films don't just fit one genre. Alot of war films will fit under action too. War Films are different to Action Films inasmuch as they centre around an actual, historical or modern armed conflict involving armies fighting against one another (or in the case of more 'psychological War Films', with themselves - eg, the opening 45-mins of "Full Metal Jacket" which throws up a lot of interesting ideas about how the armed forces dehumanizes the people within armies to create the 'perfect' killing machines).. Action Films tend to be lone figures (usually ex-forces types or Martial Artists..) going up against seemingly insurmountable odds... Ergo, "First Blood" would be an Action Film, whereas "Platoon" is a War Film, even though both revolve around the Vietnam conflict in one way or another...
March 13, 200718 yr Jennifer Garner used to kick real good on ALIAS. She's also pretty hot, which is always a plus.

March 15, 200718 yr She's kind of moving away from all those action roles though... And "Daredevil" and "Elektra" were both quite dreadful films.... guess you didnt bother with ghosr rider then
March 15, 200718 yr guess you didnt bother with ghosr rider then   I did as it happens... It was actually considerably better than "Daredevil" and "Elektra"..... Nic Cage was totally miscast however, but way to go in gettng Peter Fonda to play Mephistopheles. Quite inspired. And Sam Elliott really IS the quintessential Cowboy.... And just who the hell was that tree trunk who played the Young Johnny Blaze....? BAAAAAAAD acting....

Nic Cage was just playing Elvis for most of the film as usual. however if they want an actor for a straight to dvd DTV premiere i think i've found the perfect cast  all we need is to nail a few matchsticks to the bald dudes head and he can remake hellraiser while hes at it!!! http://wplr.com/images/music/judas-priest-2005.jpg http://www.worth1000.com/web/media/29909/1/robhalford2.jpg (appologies if you are a fan of this band. i dont know any of their music just seen the image in mags)
