one thing, though... I think a re-test should be compulsory for all over-65s.... THEY are the road menaces these days.

 

 

thats horrifyingly ageist, an awful sweeping assumption that all over 65's are doddery fuddle minded fogeys..... it was only last week that you jumped down jjn's throat for making similar sweeping statements about gay people..

Maybe the over 70's should sit a hazzard perception test, say every 3 years.

 

Anything that can slow down boy racers is welcome, because its not only themselves they put at risk, but other road users and pedestrians.

oh i agree that the elderly should have their ability tested, i was just making a point :)

errr... Rob, this whole thread is about penalising drivers UNDER a certain age... why is penalising drivers OVER a certain age so different? Ageism is ageism after all, isn't it?

 

As I said, not only do some people over a certain age become less aware and slower to react, they also have a very different style of driving which, quite frankly, has no place on modern roads.... the regular hazard perception checks, for one thing, even if they save one life a year, should be mandatory.

I wonder if there are any statistics available on the age of the drivers involved in fatal car accidents? I know they must have them somewhere. Maybe if we had them available it might shed a different light on things.

 

There really does seem to have been an awful lot of young lives wiped out in road smashes recently. (Another 3 killed in a smash in Scotland today). And the common factors seem to be-

 

1) Young males at the wheel

2) Excessive speed

3) Carrying passengers.

 

 

It's the usual 'Look at me. I can go real fast and show off to my pals' mentality. But you see, when you are 17 you are immortal aren't you?

 

 

 

The doddery old half blind pensioner driving the wrong way down a Motorway is a separate issue. But my guess would be that, whilst annoying, they do not make up the bulk of the fatal road accident figures.

I partially agree, i think that at a certain age in an O.A.P's life they should be re-tested to ensure safe driving. It's not only the young who have problems. ;)

I think everyone should take a driving test every 10 years after they pass, personally. Just to make sure you can cope with new technology and you've not lost it...

Some of that is really stupid, especially the night curfew part, and 20 year olds who look young will get pulled over at night all the time because of the curfew? :unsure: i personally need a car for uni and to be able to get to places over the next few years, especially when my parents don't drive, s i don't want to have to pay out £3,000!!

In my state (Illinois), everyone age 74-86 must renew their license (requiring a visiual and on-road driving test) every 2 years, and anyone over 87 has to pass the test and renew their license each year. Also if you are over 74 and you are cited for an infraction, you have to pass the test to drive again.

That's ok but i don't agree with the each year test for over 87 yr olds :( that not very nice :)

My grandfather was such a ghastly driver and so stubbornly refused to give up his car, so my grandmother stole his license and to get a new one he had to take the test and naturally failed :D
