ARIA Chart Commentary

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

This week could possibly be the last week for Hinder at the top of the charts, but they do retain the No.1 spot for a seventh week with "Lips of an Angel", and in doing so they move to equal fifth placing for Most Weeks at No.1 this Decade. They are now tied with The Pussycat Dolls' August-October 2005 No.1 single "Don't Cha". The reason that they most likely won't be at the top next week is that Silverchair's new single "Straight Lines" is out in shops this week, and it has been No.1 on the Download charts for the past two weeks.

The Top 4 are stable this week, only one new entry is to the Top 10 this week. KT Tunstall's "Suddenly I See" track jumps from 15 to 9 this week to finally crack the Top 10 after the song was initially released back in January 2006. It is still being used as the theme for "Ugly Betty", and this week was also shown in an episode of "Medium".

This very week in 2004 (8-March), Jamelia was claiming the No.1 spot for a single week with her first Aussie hit, "Superstar". Now her fifth Top 50 single is this week's highest new entry at No.19. "Something About You" was originally a Top 10 single in the UK late last year, and she's had two more since then in the UK, but the track finally charts here this week. Her other hits include "Thank You" (No.7, April 2004), "See it in a Boy's Eyes" (No.35, August 2004) and "DJ"/"Stop" (No.37, January 2005), the B-Side of which was a cover of the 1989 Sam Brown single which was included on the Bridget Jones's Diary 2 Soundtrack.

Right behind Jamelia at No.20 is the second single for Swedish DJ/Remixer/Produced Eric Prydz, "Proper Education". His first single was the No.2 track "Call on Me" which sample Steve Winwood's 1982 & 1988 track "Valerie", whilst this one samples Pink Floyd's No.2 single from March 1980, "Another Brick in the Wall". This is the second song this decade to sample this track, there was also 2000's "Brick Track vs Gitty Up" by Salt-N-Pepa.

New at No.33 is the second Top 50 single for Josh Pyke entitled "Lines on Palms". Josh hit No.39 with the track "Memories and Dust" last October, and that is the name of his forthcoming album in two weeks.

Last year Neighbors starlet Stephanie McIntosh hit No.3 with her first single "Mistake", then she followed that up with the title track of her album "Tightrope" which made it to No.16. Now the third single from her debut album "So Do I Say Sorry First?" debuts at No.35.

And the fifth new entry this week is the follow-up to the November 2006 No.1 single "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" (No.25 this week), "She's My Man" by The Scissor Sisters which comes in at No.39.

Australia is the first country around the world that has made The Fray's album "How to Save a Life" a No.1, and this week it stays for a second week at the top of our charts.

With the Top 5 almost the same order as last week (4 and 5 swap places), the highest new entry to the charts is the expected No.1 album in the UK next week, "Neon Bible" by Arcade Fire. The Canadian group's second album (their first was 2004's "Funeral") was recorded in a small church outside of Montreal during much of 2006.

The top 3 new entries this week are all EMI Product, and the second of these comes in at No.14, the self-titled album by Grinderman (aka Nick Cave). The idea for the project came around 2004 when Nick was working on his "Abattoir Blues" album, and instead of Nick presenting song to The Bad Seeds, he took a few of the musicians and workshopped songs together with them to come up with the Grinderman project. They took their sessions to a London recording studio last February, and issued the lead track off the album in October last year, "No p**** Blues".

New at No.33 is "Pocket Symphony" by Air. It's the follow-up to the February 2004 album "Talkie Walkie" which reached No.18.
