Welcome Francis. A good review there, I agree with quite a bit. ^_^ Ooh and please PM me your top ten songs from this year for the chart on Sunday.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/is.gif Iceland: Eiríkur Hauksson - Ég les í lófa þínum

Hmm an interesting song here from Iceland. I think it could go either way tbh - qualify and come top ten or just flop in the semis. I'm not a fan of the song myself, men and ballads don't go all that well together imo, and Iceland did try that formula in 2004 with Jonsi, who got eight points I believe. Falling at the first hurdle all of a sudden seems the more likely option. :(

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ir.gif Ireland: Dervish - They Can't Stop The Spring

This is a very nice song from Ireland, and ten years ago this would've been another storming victory for the Irish - though to be fair, other countries have improved vastly in the last ten years, so you can't blame it all on neighbours! Last year Brian shocked us all by coming top ten, but he did have a good draw in the final. Singing from fourth, I don't think this song will get very far for Dervish. The woman's voice isn't incredibly strong and the song isn't as good as Brian's last year either. I reckon this'll come somewhere in the bottom ten, probably bottom five. :(

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/il.gif Israel: Teapacks - Push The Button

I don't like this much, and I can't see it doing much in the semis either. It's quite an odd song, but the pathetic political row over it will no doubt have increased people's interest in it. Israel seem to either produce a fantastic song though or just churn out drivel. This is the latter. We want more Shiri Maymon or Dana International please Israel!!!

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/la.gif Latvia: Bonaparti.lv - Questa Notte

This is another of those songs that could go either way, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Latvia pull off something big here. :o They like to try different things, and last year's effort didn't work, but this year's song is actually very good. Don't be at all surprised if this name gets pulled out of an envelope on May 10th. I can't see it winning though in all honesty. Top ten in the final would be a push too.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/li.gif Lithuania: 4Fun - Love Or Leave

This is a lovely little song from Lithuania. But it's going to flop, I can just see it. It's not a very powerful ballad - not as much as Serbia's entry or the United Kingdom's entry could've been, <_< however I do like it. The draw for this isn't too favourable either, and I fear this will just be forgotten amidst other stronger entries. :(

Interesting views there David...I sincerely hope Latvia don't qualify but it is very different so it wouldn't surprise me...

I really like the Irish song but the woman's voice is very odd...

I notice the 'Lordi' effect this year, quite a few more 'rock' type songs evident.

my musings (from my post on Digital spy.)

I'm liking Andorra a lot!,..reminds me of My chemical romance.

Czech Repulic...,Lordi lite!.

Finland......evanesscence anyone?..quite like it though.

France..ah bless,,, annoyingly catchy!..

Isreal, quirky, entertaining.

Moldova. evanesance again.

Sweden.Starts off like 'waterloo' then turns into the Bay city rollers with status quo guitar break in the middle!. very seventies. Dark Horse this one, might do well.

Switzerland. strangly entertaining.

Ukraine. The silly one, (isnt there always).

These were the ones that caught my attention for one reason or another.

The rest seemed standard euro fare,

here is the link to hear all the songs, in case anyone missed it

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ma.gif Malta: Olivia Lewis - Vertigo

This is an excellent, powerful pop song. But I've mixed views on how well it will do. I don't think it'll win, that's for sure, however it could sneak into the top ten in the semi-final and do fairly well on the night of the final. I reckon somewhere between #8 and #12 in the semi-final is where it'll finish, and so I'm not too sure on whether it will make it or not.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/mol.gif Moldova: Natalia Barbu - Fight

I love this. I love this a lot.  I would absolutely love to see this be victorious on May 12th, but, like Malta, I'm a bit unsure as to whether it will qualify. In all fairness, this really should - with ease - but with so many other memorable songs also in the semi-final, who knows? This of course will have the advantage of the near guaranteed douze points from Romania and Ukraine on May 10th, so let's hope Natalia does well.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/mn.gif Montenegro: Stevan Faddy - Hajde Kroci

Eugh. :puke2: Need I say more? Yes, yes I need. This is real $h!te, and I'd be fairly certain this won't be making the final. Honestly, Montenegro have come up with good songs as part of Serbia & Montenegro in the past, why have they decided to send this? :(

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/nl.gif Netherlands: Edsilia Rombley - Nooit Meer Zonder Jou

Ahh, Edsilia. And will this be the last time we see the Dutch in the Eurovision Song Contest? Well, they think they're onto a real winner here, and as much as I quite like it, it won't do too well. I'd like to see this qualify, if only just to make sure the Netherlands don't decide to ditch the ESC next year, which they might well do does Edsilia not qualify.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/no.gif Norway: Guri Schanke - Ven a Bailar Conmigo

Hmm... a really catchy song, but at the end of the day, I don't see this in with a great chance of qualifying for the final. Norway will have to pull something pretty spectacular out of the bag on the 10th for this to be anywhere near the top ten. With so much competition, could it be ANOTHER nul points for Norway? :(

Good reviews David

I agree about your Maltese prediction...should fare as well as Julie & Ludwig from 2004...The Dutch song sounds so much like One Day In Your Life by Anastacia...it just doesn't sound like a qualifier and I have gone off it a lot recently :( Norway have a very real chance of coming last actually as political voting doesn't help them as much as it should and the similar Portugese song is more authentic

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/pl.gif Poland: The Jet Set - Time to Party

Hmm this isn't bad. How this does will be an indication of how Big Brovaz would've done for the UK if they'd qualified I reckon. It's fairly catchy, but I don't see it qualifying due to the huge competition in the semis. Could be unlucky #11 for Poland again actually. :( I'd like to see them qualify though, just to reassure me that older ESC countries can still make it, even if by old I mean mid-90s!

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/pr.gif Portugal: Sabrina - Danca Comigo

The best Portugese entry for a few years probably, but is there much competition? Rita Guerra was good in 2003, she should've done better, but since then the Portugese entries have been really poor... This isn't very memorable, and with few neighbours I can see this finishing in the bottom four or five. The Portugese really need to get their act together and pull out a decent song!

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ro.gif Romania: Locomondo - Liubi, Liubi, I Love You

I don't like this at all. Is saying "I Love You" in a load of different languages a bribe for votes? Well, it's a more feeble attempt than Scooch's city round up in "Flying The Flag". And I think this will do worse than the UK. Naturally they'll receive 12 from Moldova and seven or eight from Spain and Portugal, but I don't see where the other votes for this will come from, I really don't. It's not particularly catchy and it's on directly after Ukraine and the UK, both far more catchy and memorable. Back to the semis next year for the Romanians I reckon...

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ru.gif Russia: Serebo - Song Number One

The dark horse? Maybe, I'm not so sure tbh. The more I listen to it, the less chance I think it has. If this is sung well live then we could well be on our way to Moscow next year, which is what the Russians so deperately want, but I'm beginning to think top ten might be all this three-piece girl group can master. Excellent song, and I see it benefitting hugely from neighbours, but I don't think the rest of Europe will be quite so kind. That said, I'd be incredibly shocked if it isn't top ten.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/sr.gif Serbia: Marija Serifovic - Molitva

When I first heard this I was sceptical about how it'd do. I was then pissed off because this was the only ballad in the competition after Cyndi failed to make it to Helsinki. I now realise this song is a hundred times better than "I'll Leave My Heart" (sorry Cyndi!) and, imo, could finally see an excellent, powerful ballad win the Eurovision Song Contest. I'd actually really like to see this win too. A fantastic song, and sung in a country's native language, which could inspire more countries also to sing in their own languages. We could WELL be going to Belgrade on May 24th 2008.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/sl.gif Slovenia: Alenka Gotar - Cvet z Juga

At first I thought we had a winner here. Memorable, different, lots of neighbours... but not anymore tbh. It could scrape through to the final, though like I've said so many times before, there is heaps of competition out there. The Slovenes have been quite unlucky in the last few semi-finals, with fairly decent songs and failing to qualify. I'm quite undecided on this, so I'll say somewhere between #9 and #11!

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/es.gif Spain: Nash - I Love You Mi Vida

This will get the teen girl's vote no doubt, however I don't see many people voting for this on anything else other than their looks tbh. It's quite a weak song from Spain, and Nash don't sing it particularly well. This could finish highest of the big four though.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/se.gif Sweden: Ark - The Worrying Kind

Hmm well this is a strange one. First off, I don't think it'll win - or come within 50 points. It's a fairly catchy song, but I just don't think it has the power to come out on top. Once again though, I'd be shocked if this doesn't finish top ten, but the lower half is probably more likely. The drag queen/transvestite obsession NEEDS to be dropped before 2008 though. -_-

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ch.gif Switzerland: DJ Bobo - Vampires Are Alive

Ahh I love this. It's so cheesy and retro and is actually a pretty impressive song. I hope this isn't the Kate Ryan of 2007, and I don't think it will be - I think that feat will go to Cyprus (screw what I said about them being a potential winner!). I think this'll finish top ten in the semis, but I don't think it'll do overly well in the final. And I hope they don't as I still haven't forgiven them for 1988. -_-

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/tr.gif Turkey: Kenan Dogulu - Shake It Up Sekerim

Eeeeek nooooo!!! This song is so cringeworthy and just horrid. -_- But it's Turkey, so it's bound to qualify. Just how many immigrants of theirs are there round Europe?! :o Anyway, more on the song - I really dislike it, I don't see the appeal at all. And what's all this "laffy taffy all the time" $h!t all about? I doubt this will get top ten on May 12th, but expect to see it appear out of an envelope in seven days time...

Serbia is getting better to my ears too! I still don't want it to win though

I asked my family what their favourite songs were after I played them the CD and they said:

Mum: Lithuania and Germany

Older Sister: Belarus and Finland

Younger Sister: Andorra

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/ukr.gif Ukraine: Verka Seduchka - Danzing

Eugh. Just NO! I really dislike this, I mean I hate drag queens at the best of times but when they sing some ridiculous song it's a whole lot worse. -_- Musically, this is below average, in my opinion, however I can see this quite easily finishing top ten. It has that fun, novelty value and it's a shame this and Scooch were drawn next to each other. I can't see it winning, and I'd seriously re-consider my Eurovision fan-ness if it did. -_-

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jarpen/sb.gif United Kingdom: Scooch - Flying The Flag

When I first heard this, I thought nothing of it - I was fairly sure it wouldn't be representing the United Kingdom on May 12th. I heard it again before May 12th and disliked it. I heard they had beaten Cyndi - I hated it. -_- Oh I was pissed off. Majorly. On March 18th I took it upon myself to download this and did see its appeal, but refused to let myself like it. Now, six weeks later it's my most played song EVER on Last.fm (though I've only had that account going for just over a year!) and it's sitting pretty top of my personal chart. f*** what I said before. I love this. It's so blatantly awful and cheesy, and with no musical merit, you might as well just play along with the joke factor of it. Next year though, the UK really do need to come up with something decent. We could quite easily pick just about any song from the top 40 to represent us and we'd instantly do well, but we screw up our chances every year. Morrissey anyone?! I can't see this winning, or going top ten, probably not even top 20. A bad draw and a dated sound will see the BBC blaming politics once again and sending more of the same, with the disbelief that we'll never win cuz Europe doesn't like us. Erm, no - perhaps it has something to do with the songs? Use the license fee wisely! :arrr:

Oooh, has Dayveed finished? :o Well done! ^_^

I may post a review over the weekend :funky:

I have indeed. :D I'm getting well excited over it now! :yahoo: I mean less than a week till the semi-final! :o Have you seen the scoreboard btw Tyron? It's alright, I posted a link in the rehearsals thread. Better than 2005/6's but still pretty similar.

I like this review very much. :yahoo: Glad to hear you have that opinion David. :D

I have seen, it looks wonderful ^_^

But I always say that because it reminds me of my favourite part of Eurovision

The Dutch song sounds so much like One Day In Your Life by Anastacia

Ooo, I have to listen to it then!! :D
