for anyone who hasn't heard of this project, Yoko Ono has re-recorded some of her old material with some of music's brightest names including Craig Armstrong, Polyphonic Spree, Antony (Antony and the Johnsons), Apples in Stereo, Spiritualized, Cat Power and electro goddess Peaches.

The result is an album as diverse and interesting as you'll hear this year.

Some hate her singing style (especially the frankly scary Lennon devotees for whom Yoko will always be accused of the old nonsense of 'breaking up the Beatles... zzz)... but give it a listen, some songs, especially the gorgeous Death of Samantha and the seminal Walking On Thin Ice are classics, and prove that the notion that Lennon was the only musical talent in that family is totally incorrect.

There's some soundbites here... and the Guardian's grudgingly good review here: http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/st...2013581,00.html

Cant stand the caterwauling bint, sorry Russ..... And early 90s US Indie Rock band Galaxie 500 did a vastly better version of her "Listen The Snow Is Falling" than she ever did.....
He's not lying

You poor, poor girl..... The cross you must bear being his sister....

I'm surprised you didn't want to throttle him afterwards....

Mate, I dont mind a bit of pretentious Avant Garde, I own albums by Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, Can, Einsturzende Neubauten, Glenn Branca, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Aphex Twin, Godspeed You Black Emperor and LOADS of others.....

But YOKO ONO?????? Too far even for me...

I love The Polyphonic Spree . . .

I might give it a listen for them.

You know, it's alright that Russ  I listened to a few of them. I'm entering a bit of a random Harajuku phase at the moment and things like this are beginning to sound really quite attractive to me!!! :o B) Some kind of Beatles-esque experimental Japanese indie sound? I could imagine playing in it the background while I'm working. Do you know any more slightly random Japanese/Harajuku style stuff . . . I know you're a fountain of knowledge :) (and a fountain that taps straight into my bank account at that :( )

Hi Deb!

not too familiar with other Japanese stuff tbh... however, I know the new Air album uses quite a few traditional old Japanese instruments... hated the album at first, it's grown on me a lot now. So I'd recommend Pocket Symphony by Air... beautiful in parts. And anything by Ryuichi Sakamoto is worth checking out.

I saw Polyphonic Spree at Glastonbury a few years ago - bloody brilliant they were, all 682 of them ;)
