Posted March 20, 200719 yr Sweet relief at top of the charts 20 March 2007 - 11:23:19 Source: MW It threatens to be a Comic Relief one-two at the top of the singles chart next week, as early retail reports suggest that alternative charity single I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers, Brian Potter and Andy Pipkin (EMI) is set to take the number one slot. The song, which currently sits at number three, was released last Friday, selling 22,000 copies by close of business on Saturday. However, prolonged exposure on Friday night’s Comic Relief show has sent sales spiralling and the track looks near certain to take the number one slot, just ahead of fellow Comic Relief single, Walk This Way by Sugababes and Girls Aloud (Fascination/Island). The release of Potter and Pipkin’s comedy cover has also given a boost to The Proclaimers’ original version of 500 Miles (Chrysalis), which should claim a top thirty placing next week. Also looking likely for top five slots are Alex Gaudino’s dance anthem Destination Calabria (Data), The Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani (Interscope) and Avril Lavigne’s Girlfriend (Columbia). The Twang’s debut single Wide Awake (B-Unique/Polydor) is pushing for a top ten placing, after reaching 32 on downloads only this week. Brett Anderson’s Love Is Dead (Drowned In Sound), Tiny Dancers’ I Will Wait For You (Parlophone) and The Rumble Strips' Alarm Clock (Fallout/Island) should all claim top forty entries. On the albums chart, Ray Quinn looks set to claim another week at number one with Doing It My Way (Syco), although Enter Shikari’s Take To The Skies (Ambush Reality) should score a top three entry. ================================================= Singles 1 The Proclaimers feat. March 20, 200719 yr Yeah what happened with Avril? It went in at no. 73 a few weeks ago, then disappeared, i thought that was a bit odd  It was doing so well - they decided it might peak too soon and lose sales before the physical was released so they removed it - added it back on Sunday after she was on the Chart Show. Good move methinks - I suspect it MAY be top 10 in the mids but fall by the end of the week as it's overtaken Gwen + Nelly on iTunes.
March 20, 200719 yr Is it true the proclaimers comic relief single was released at the last minute due to poor sales of walk this way? I dont remember there being 2 comic relief singles in one year before.

I dont remember there being 2 comic relief singles in one year before. No, it was always scheduled for release in a similar way that there was 2 in 2005 (An "official" one and an "unoffical" one) I think it was rush-released on Saturday due to poor sales of the GS-SB single.
March 20, 200719 yr Ah right. I have a feeling the proclaimers comic relief single will out sell walk this way by a mile.
March 20, 200719 yr I don't think it was rush-released - the idea was always for the premiere of the video to be on the night - just like Amarillo. The difference now is that downloads count immediately so the single was able to be put online at the same time and sold enough in two days to make number 3. It's a definite chart-topper. It's got some genuine comedy, PK and LB fans will buy it for the video and 500 Miles is a very, very, very popular song (note how it's been in the top 100 since all downloads were counted). Sugababes vs Girls Aloud is an awful cover, removing the power of the original backing track, with some half, nay, quarter-arsed vocals and with a video which doesn't even have a joke in it...and approx four seconds of celebrity cameos towards the end. It's worse than Hale & Pace.

Possibly, although Music Week reported some CD sales occuring so you could count that as a rush release.
March 20, 200719 yr It will definately outsell Walk this way- like Amarillo did last year (it's all the Peter Kay aspect!) OK, it wasn't the best cover, but it's far better than the usual covers that GA always seem to do! Also, remember it's all for Charity!
March 20, 200719 yr Another week and its Tuesday already and we are guaranteed another new #1 this week from The Proclaimers WHy does everyone assume this? GA/SB will have gotten a boost from CR too. Edited March 20, 200719 yr by vidcapper
March 20, 200719 yr WHy does everyone assume this? GA/SB will have gotten a boost from CR too. Actually, I reckon after hearing that c**p for the 1st time, a lot of casual listeners would actually be put OFF from buying it, despite the comic relief tag. So it could cause a deline in sales, especially as most shops have taken the ridiculous decision to bump up the price to £3.99. If it didn't sell very well at a quid cheaper than that, what makes them think it'll do better now? Madness, but that's the British way. Personally I woulda done a Joss Stone and tumbled it 99p, and got that c**p off the shelves ASAP. It still wouldn't be enough to keep it at No 1 though, but a few deaf people who benefit from the proceedings might be tempted... P.S I would have given £300 to Comic Relief if they'd promised to never play that song on the radio or TV again. I ain't kidding...
March 20, 200719 yr Author WHy does everyone assume this? GA/SB will have gotten a boost from CR too. Well it did 22k just for one day  times that by 4, it would have made more sales than GA in a week, if it was released last Monday
