April 10, 200718 yr Jamiroquai has not sold enough records to be considered a superstar. MJ has faded from superstar status as hes not had a hit album for ages and ages and same with Prince - people like Mariah outsell them these days. Possibly the last true superstars were Cher and Spice Girls, at the end of the 90s, and Shania Twain - they all had MEGA sales. So Michael Jackson is not a superstar because he doesn´t have a "hit album" (last studio album 7 million worldwide) and the Spice Girls are, even if they don´t have an album since their floppy "Forever" and all the solo fiascos??? I don´t think the author of this article is concerned in sales, otherwise he would not have mentioned Morrisey. Anyway, Robbie is big in all the criterias: record sales, massive concerts, sells magazines and stuff... The author is just a bit dull...
April 10, 200718 yr Rihanna will be  ... Kidding -_- Erm, I think Robbie Williams, Girls Aloud to some extent and Will Young are considered superstars Gils Aloud and Will Young are both UK-only artists. Girls Aloud never had a real huge selling album and they won´t have much longevity - can you imagine them singing when they´re 40 years old...
April 10, 200718 yr Mariah Carey, Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera Those five will all be remembered in twenty years Edited April 10, 200718 yr by Squirtle
April 10, 200718 yr LOL I had added Christina right before posting, and forgot to change the number
April 10, 200718 yr the likes of Britney & Christina will be considered as legends, but you cant exactly say there not legends when they've only been singing for likr 6/7 years, they've still got years to go
April 10, 200718 yr doesnt people like britney, xtina, justin etc dont they count or have they wasted their lifes getting to number one so many times???
April 10, 200718 yr Actually yeah, contradicting my last post - Robbie, Madonna, Britney, Mariah, Christina, Michael Jackson = all superstars without a doubt. Beyonce and Justin are on their way as well ^_^
April 10, 200718 yr Madonna, Robbie, U2. I think Kylie is a star as well. To be honest I wouldn't even recognise half the top selling acts these days if I was sitting next to them on a train for 20 hours. I do yearn for the 'characters' of days gone by. Freddy Mercury, Michael Jackson, George Michael, Rod and Elton, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles. Elvis, David Bowie... Acts with stage presence and star quality. Whether I liked their music or not they were in my mind 'Stars'. All we seem to get these days is pasty faced guitar bands and here today gone tomorrow Reality TV singers. I don't even think it's necessarily about Sales. James Blunt sold by the bucketload. But I don't see him as a Star (let alone a Superstar).
April 11, 200718 yr doesnt people like britney, xtina, justin etc dont they count or have they wasted their lifes getting to number one so many times??? Are you saying they wasted their lives trying to get number one? Or am I misunderstanding that?

Thanks for that post weedle..I dug out the Times article and your post states pretty much what was written after the sales stats and concert revenue figs. Of course its about popularity but its mostly about "star" quality, character, personality and charisma..they even quoted you LOL regarding James Blunt and a few others who have sold huge amounts but you wouldn't recognise them on a crowded bus. Thats the essence of the Superstar, and of course Michael Jackson is listed along with all the big names past, like Freddy, George Michael, etc..but as mentioned before in that context Madonna and Robbie are the last of the line of modern day superstars that fill the criteria according to that feature. April 11, 200718 yr I don't think Christina Aguilera ever will be. Correct me if I'm wrong but her recent album hasn't exactly been a huge success anywhere. And it's only her 3rd! NOT superstar status at all! :|
April 11, 200718 yr I think Christina has more of a chance of being a superstar than Britney and Justin!
April 11, 200718 yr I think the potential or already superstars from the 00s are: Britney, XTina, Justin, U2, Coldplay, Madonna, Kylie, Mariah, Robbie, P!nk...cant think of any more.
April 11, 200718 yr I think Christina has more of a chance of being a superstar than Britney and Justin! 100% Agree ^_^
April 11, 200718 yr Mariah Carey, Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera Those five will all be remembered in twenty years Well, Madonna and Mariah are already remembered for more then 20 years... Britney has made an impact, she needs a sucessful comeback, tough... Justin is dispensable and $h!tty won´t stay for too much... Christina is already fading, her star power isn´t anymore 1/2 of what it was in her first album.
