April 15, 200718 yr This tells us some of the people in the Top 10, it's not really that informative though :( Comedy Top 10 Revealed Most of them are fools, some of them are dreamers, a few are downright evil and only one of them is a woman - but one thing that unites this strange mixture of characters is their ability to make us laugh. The top 10 World's Greatest Comedy Characters as voted for by the British public has been announced by Channel 4 - to promote its top 50 countdown show on Saturday. The 10 funniest characters, released in alphabetical order, include old favourites like Ronnie Barker's Fletcher and John Cleese's Basil Fawlty as well as newer comedy personalities like Alan Partridge (Steve Coogan) and David Brent (Ricky Gervais). Jennifer Saunders is the only woman to appear on the list with her Absolutely Fabulous persona, Eddie Monsoon. Simon Pegg is the rising star of the list. The actor - who is currently enjoying box office success with his second film, Hot Fuzz - made it into the top 10 for his character Tim in the series Spaced. One foreigner has impressed Brits enough to warrant a place at the top. Seinfeld writer, co-creator and executive producer Larry David who appears as himself in the show Curb Your Enthusiasm. He is also the only real life "character" to appear in the top 10, which also includes Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G, Edmund Blackadder, played by Rowan Atkinson, and Papa Lazarou from The League of Gentlemen.
