Midge Ure co-wrote Do They Know It's Christmas. Here's the far superior version by Band Aid II

The original (superior) version became the biggest selling single in the UK of all time - later beaten, of course by Elton John's dirge. The previous holder of the record was a double A-side. Here's the better song

Wings - Girls' School

Girls School was the superior track of a double A sided single which was relegated to the B-side by the Great British public whilst the American public had more sense.

Another example of this & keeping up the School theme is this song which was incredibly the B-side in the UK behind the awful Neil Diamond written "The Boat That I Row" but this track was the A-side in the USA where it spent six weeks at #1 .....

Lulu - To Sir With Love

Lulu's last big hit was Relight My Fire with Take That. Despite the title, it was not a remake of

The Doors - Light My Fire

The Doors had a US#3 hit with Touch Me in 1969. Another artist who has had a US Top3 hit with a song of the same title is ....

Cathy Dennis - Touch Me (All Night Long)

Cathy Dennis murdered Waterloo Susnset to provide her with another hit. The original - 40 years old last month - was far better

Kinks - Waterloo Sunset

Ray and Dave Davies were possibly the first 'scrapping' brothers in a popular rock combo. The Gallaghers came later of course...and used to be good, remember?

Oasis - Supersonic

One of the Gallaghers could do a song called "When we were good". After all, there is a precedent.

George Harrison - When We Was Fab

BTW, don't forget ThisIsPop's newly established Beatles forum

however as i was reading about prefab sprout being re-issed over and over again in the word today  and cant be bothered thinking of anything else:

Prefab Sprout - Lions In My Own Garden

From post fab to prefab - great link. Anyway, one of the guests on Prefab Sprout's third album, From Langley Park To Memphis, was Stevie Wonder. So, in a return to the "when they were good" theme,

Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke

Sorry about the video. I couldn't find one of Mr. Judkins himself

Sir Duke can be shortened to just "Duke", which happened to be the name of an album by Genesis.

so how about Genesis.................Turn it on again

Phil Collins was a child actor and as wiki says:

Phil Collins began a career as a child actor and model, and won his first major role as The Artful Dodger in a London production of Oliver!.

now prod duo the Artful Dodger  released a record featuring the vocals of Robbie Craig, so the next record link is:

Robbie Craig - Nothing I Can't Do

Wendy Craig (no relation as far as I'm aware) starred in Butterflies. So, let's have the theme tune

Dolly Parton - Love Is Like A Butterfly

Scottish duo Strawberry Switchblade had a minor hit in the UK with a cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene so lets have......

Strawberry Switchblade - Since Yesterday

The Raspberries were an early 1970s Power Pop band often compared to their UK equivalent on the Beatles Apple label - Badfinger.....

So lets have their most famous song:

Badfinger - Without You

I'm not aware of a band called Goodtoe so I'll have to return to one of our favourite popular beat combos,

The Beatles - Within You Without You

Keeping on the theme of Beatles tribute acts.... Within You Without You was covered by Oasis for the BBC's 40th Anniversary remake of Sgt Pepper's .... album.

That is not the first time Oasis have covered the "Fab Four"......

Oasis - I Am The Walrus (Live 1996)
