The Sweetest Girl was covered by Madness as a minor hit single #35 in 1986.

Madness also covered this original & turned it into a pop standard:

Suggs was the subject of one of those great Top of the Pops moments when Chris Eubank attempted to introduce him singing Cecila - a cover version of

Simon and Garfunkel - Cecila

Paul Simon's most famous (certainly in the UK) solo hit single is "You Can Call Me Al".

Another singer that you can certainly call Al is....

Al Stewart - The Year Of The Cat

Ahh, great choice. The Chinese don't have a year of the cat. However, they do have a year of the sheep. So,

Pink Floyd - Sheep

The Bureau had a top 5 single in Australia with Only For Sheep. They consisted of disgruntelled members of:

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Soon / Plan B - Live UK 1981

so here is Divine with Shake it up!!

:o At least you've made it easy for me to choose something better. Fairly obvious but

Divine Comedy - Becoming More Like Alfie

Michael Caine starred in 'Alfie' and he also played the title role in 'Get Carter'.

(I was going to link to Carter USM but I think I already have so...)

Stereolab once recorded a pretty ace cover of Roy Budd's Theme to Get Carter so...

Stereolab - French Disko

The worst example of French Disco .......ever

Serge Gainsbourg - Sea, Sex And Sun

And even more hideous record where you can find Sea, Sex & Sun in close proximity is:

T-Spoon - Sex On The Beach

Time to raise the standard again. No sign of a video but - from a Peel Sessions compilation -

Where's The Beach - Tripping The Luv Fantastic

Where's The Beach - Tripping The Luv Fantastic

??? is the band Where's The Beach or the song??? when is this from???

btw wiki tells me that:

In the 1980s Peel set up the Strange Fruit record label with Clive Selwood to release material recorded by the BBC for Peel Sessions

so the next record is Billie Holiday singing Strange Fruit!!! standards increase yet again.

Standards lowered again. 80's Melbourne pop- girl - punkers

The Fruit Pastilles I Don't Ever Want To See You Again

A homophone of pastilles is Pastels. I'm not that fond of The Pastels though, I prefer their contemporaries The Vaselines.

The Vaselines - Son of a Gun

The song is on a Peel Sessions collection (on Strange Fruit) from 1991 and the session was recorded in August 1989. John Peel's sleeve notes give details of a few of the bands but not Where's The Beach unfortunately. I'd never heard of them before I got the album and don't recall hearing of them ever again. It's a sot of indie-dance type song and should have been a huge hit - assuming it was ever released.

Anyway, back to the chain and from Son of a Gun let's have

Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man

to JX - Son Of A Gun

Oo-er, double posting...I'll assume that went from Son of a Gun to Son of a Preacher Man to Son of a Gun again then!

JX was Jake Williams and (rumour has it - although I've never had it confirmed) is still working today under the nom de plume of Rex the Dog. So, taking the first part of his new name and adding another letter and punctuation mark...

T-Rex - Solid Gold Easy Action

discogs has no artists with the name Solid Gold Easy Action but they do have a Solid Gold Easy Amex - Enjoy which is according to the dude on the site 'the greatest Balearic tune of all time' (?!?!?!?!?)

it feats a band called red box and was remixed by paul oakenfold

as Oakenfold's tunes will be too modern the next record has to be the 1987 promo video of Red Box - Chenko (tenka-io) mainly as its got an odd title!!! (however OMG! wiki obsessives!!! looks like we got a devotional random fanbase on that site!?!?!? :o )

In 2006 Bruce Springsteen did an album of Pete Seeger songs called We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions.

Hence lets have The Boss' best song (IMHO):

Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
