Smiths to join Hall of Fame

teletext.co.uk

The Smiths will be inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame next year, sparking rumours they will reform to play at the opening ceremony.

The band haven't played together since 1987, but the New York ceremony has seen groups such as Talking Heads reform for one-off performances.

Morrissey has always rejected any idea of a Smiths reunion, since he and Johnny Marr were sued by the other two.

Are you pleased with this news or does it go against your aesthetic regarding what The Smiths represent?

This is very big news as The Smiths are the first act to get an automatic place in the Hall Of Fame since 2004 when George Harrison & The Dells were inducted without going through the usual selection & voting process as it is felt there contribution to popular music is so significant.

Since 1998 five acts are annually voted into the Hall Of Fame, however additional acts can be added as the committee panel's discretion (usually cult acts or pioneers from the 1950s/early 1960s who appear to have been snubbed previously). But the panel nominates these special acts prior to start of the selection process for the year's inductees.

Smiths reunite for Hall?

teletext.co.uk

The Smiths will be inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame next year, sparking rumours they'll reform to play at the opening ceremony.

Bands like Talking Heads and The Police have reformed to play the New York ceremony, and Andy Rourke says he's willing to appear.

"I don't know if we'll all go over there or not," Rourke told Manchester Evening News. "It might be Morrissey and three cardboard cut-outs."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I think Morrissey & three cardboard cut-outs is more likely than Mozzer performing with Andy Rourke & Mike Joyce. However, I'd love to see Morrissey perform with Johnny Marr at the event.

Smiths set for reunion?

Adam Moss

Manchester Evening News 19/04/2007

THE Smiths are to be inducted into the rock'n'roll hall of fame in America next year, I can exclusively reveal, and the four band members could be on the same stage for the first time since their messy split in 1987.

The Manchester band, who helped put Strangeways and Salford Lads Club on the world map, are to be honoured by the Hall of Fame in a lavish ceremony planned for early next year, my spies tell me.

The entire band may make the trip for the induction, although judging by bass player Andy Rourke's reaction nothing is yet set in stone.

He tells me: "You never know what may happen. I don't know if we'll all go over there for the induction or not.

"It might just be Morrissey with three cardboard cut-outs. We'll just have to wait and see what happens."

If they do play on stage it will be regarded as a miracle after the bitter court case over performing royalties in 1996.

At the award ceremony they will be expected to give an acceptance speech in which most toast their peers and forebears in rock and follow it with a once-in-a-lifetime live performance as a tribute.

Artists are only eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record - meaning the time will be ripe for The Smiths next year, as their debut single Hand In Glove, was released in 1983. If they are inducted, The Smiths will join greats like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who among the elite of pop. Ceremonies have featured many unforgettable moments such as when Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys and Bruce Springsteen shared the same stage or when Santana performed Black Magic Woman with ex-Fleetwood Mac member Peter Green, the song's composer and original performer.

The artists are further honoured when they are featured in the Museum's Hall of Fame exhibit, which includes a computerised juke box containing virtually every song of every performer inductee and a film on three huge screens recounting their careers and music.

The 2008 inductees will not be officially revealed until late this year.

Do you think The Smiths should reform for this event?

  • 3 weeks later...

I sincerly doubt they will as Mozza once said he'd rather 'eat his own testacles' then do it

It would absolutely amazing if it was at least Mozza and Marr which is the most likely option, don't think they'd want to go anywhere near Joyce and Rourke after they tried to sue them!

This is all sincerly deserved anyway, just about every band I listen to now has been influenced by The Smiths, it's quite strange how they were so groundbreaking with just vocals, guitar, bass and drums though!

Well deserved IMHO!

Although i really don't believe a reunion (even a one-off) would ever happen.

I think Hell would freeze over before that.
