Britain's Rich List Revealed Tonight On ITV1

19 April 2007

ITV1’s Britain’s Rich List (Thursday 19 April at 9.00pm) exclusively reveals who the wealthiest individuals in Britain are and the extraordinary riches they have achieved.

Based on the work of Dr Philip Beresford who has compiled the authoritative Sunday Times guide for 19 years, the programme counts down the bank balances of some of the UK’s most intriguing celebrities, from the guaranteed wealth of the Royal Family to individuals from the worlds of pop music, publishing and business.

While the key results will remain a closely guarded secret until the transmission of the show (and the full results until the publication of the Sunday Times Rich List 2007) the ITV programme reveals that:

Simon Cowell is this year’s star riser in the world of pop music with an estimated wealth of £100 million, up £40 million on last year’s results. No other individual from the world of pop has risen up the ranks as much. Now ranked at 700 (from last year’s 944), Cowell has overtaken Robbie Williams at number 755 who has only increased his wealth by £5 million to £95 million over the year

The richest footballer in the world, David Beckham, has increased his wealth by £25 million to £112 million this year – and is ranked at 619

EasyJet’s Stelios Haji-Ioannou is closing the gap with Richard Branson, having broken the billionaire barrier. Stelios is now worth a cool £1.29 billion and has moved up from number 80 on the list to number 49. Branson on the other hand has dropped out of the Top Ten and is down from number nine to number 11 with his £3.1 billion assets

Roman Abramovich’s divorce settlement with Irina has no impact on his Rich List position: he remains number two on the list with an estimated £10.8 billion. It remains to be seen exactly how Sir Paul McCartney’s settlement with Heather Mills will affect his position, currently ranked at number 102 with £725 million <_<

The wealthiest man in Britain at number one, steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, has increased his staggering fortune to more than £19 billion – up from last year’s £14.9 billion

Presented by entrepreneur and TV business guru Peter Jones (who’s on the Rich List himself with a £160 million fortune), Britain’s Rich List also shows how:

Britain’s super rich are getting richer: you now have to have a cool £70 million to even make the list of 1,000 (*£60 million in 2006).

The number of billionaires in the list will be up by more than 20% against last year’s total of 54

There are 37 music industry professionals on the list but there are no pop stars under the age of 30 – thanks to astute record company contractors. Robbie Williams, aged 33, is one of the youngest to make it onto the list

Sex is relevant. Fewer than 10% of Britain’s richest 1,000 are women

Inheritance is no longer key. When the Sunday Times Rich List first started in 1989, 75% had inherited their money. Today, 78% have made it themselves

Britain is a magnet for multi-millionaires and billionaires from all over the world. Of the five wealthiest individuals on the list, only one – The Duke of Westminster - was born in the UK.

Britain’s Rich List can be seen on ITV1 on Thursday 19 April at 9.00pm and features interviews with The Sunday Times Rich List compiler Dr Philip Beresford, David Sullivan, Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Jeffrey Archer, Felix Dennis, Duncan Bannatyne, Anita Roddick, John Caudwell, Jacqueline Gold and John Madejski.

There are also contributions from financial journalist Judi Bevan, cultural commentator Peter York, Editor of Majesty Magazine Ingrid Seward, Director of Christies Meredith Etherington-Smith, music industry accountant Cliff Dane and divorce lawyer Vanessa Lloyd Platt.

It's an hour and a half long show, so I wonder if Rob will get a mention? He is #755 so not too long of having to hear about a load of rich tycoons

Apperently his £5m is only up to March 2006 though  It does'nt include the tour profits and Rudebox seemingly. According to the Hello mag rich list he was the 3rd biggest earner of 2006 with £30m, so I take it next year he will rocket up to about at least £120m next year. It seems a bit odd though that they have'nt included the tour profits (which obviously would've been massive) or Rudebox. I mean it is late April now. -_-

And that bloody Stella taking so much of Macca's hard earned money. Eugh. <_<

Only up to March 2006? Maybe somebody should tell The Sun that.

POP guru Simon Cowell has shot up the Rich List with a fortune of £100MILLION — more than Robbie Williams.

The American Idol star boosted his assets by more than £40million in the past year.

Cowell, 46 — who said troubled Robbie should “get a grip†instead of going into drug rehab — is now the 700th richest person in Britain.

Robbie, 33, fell behind to No 755 with a £95million fortune. The pair have a tense history and Robbie is likely to be enraged that Cowell has overtaken him in the Sunday Times Rich List.

Robbie once boasted of being “rich beyond his wildest dreamsâ€. But his last album Rudebox was a flop and he earned just £5million.

Last year Cowell was at No 944. But huge US success with American Idol plus hit shows from his UK production company have earned him tens of millions.

Sir Paul McCartney is pop’s richest man at No 102 with £725million.

Britain’s Rich List is on ITV tonight at 9pm.

and Robbie is likely to be enraged that Cowell has overtaken him in the Sunday Times Rich List.

Oh I'm so sure he really cares, LOLOL!!

What a joke.

Eugh, Vicky is such an absolute moron. How exactly have they had a tence history. Simon said Rob was the best in the business not too long ago. Vicky seriously needs to wake up, as if Rob would be enraged that Simon is richer.

And I am not sure if it is only up to March 2006. But I think so because he definatly made at least £30m in 2006, most of it obviously in the second half of the year i.e past March 31st 2006, so it makes sence that way. He's actually probebly still richer than Cowell

It just sounds annoying the way they put that he has been overtaken and only eanred £5m and put int the little dig about Rudebox flopping. No mention of the tour or anything.

I wonder how the Sunday Times works out the figures anyway...

I know they always say the figures don't include money in personal bank accounts etc as they are all private.

It was very short. But they did mention him and said he was one of the few artist who makes most of their money from touring and writing their own songs. But since none of the tour money was included I am confused
How do we know the tour money wasn't included?

How do we know the tour money wasn't included?

Well it obviously was'nt. As if he made only £5m from selling 3.5 million tickets at an average of between £40-50 per ticket. He gets something like 75% of the profits with EMI getting 25%. He definatly earned £30m in 2006. And if it did'nt include the tour than It can't have inluded Rudebox as it was released in the middle of the tour itself. But it also can't just be up until March 2006 cause remember his accounts said he earned £10m.

But it isn't income though. It's wealth. It depends what he's been spending.

He could have earned £50 million last year and spent £45 million (on private jets, cars for next door neighbours and 50,000 packets of Silk Cut -_- )

That's my point. How the frig does a wee man in the Sunday Times know?

Rob is very carful with his money it seems as he has said himself in the past. I recken they go by the amount he gets per album//single sold etc, and then from the accounts of his 'In Good Company Inc'. It is their job to do it and they are experts so I doubt they make things up. But there is no way he only got £5m for 3.5m tickets and that's not to mention the millions people spend on merchadice. I mean he got a personal pay of £5m for 3 nights at Knebworth alone
I agree. It looks well suspect. I was expecting a really big increase this year. -_-

Well I still think he is on at least £120m now going by the £30m he earned in 2006. Holly on TRWS said that the accounts for 2006 are made up to March 31st 2006 so the tour and Rudebox are'nt included but will be next year. ^_^

No need to buy it then.

I noticed there is a list of the richest music stars under the age of 30. And Vanessa Mae the fiddler is at No 1 with a £30 million fortune. :o Where did she make all that money?

  • Author

I'll be buying it. I have bought it since 2002  I enjoy reading the write ups about different singers etc :P

Who is this Vanessa Mae ? I can't believe I've never heard of her :o

I saw the list of under 30's. James Blunt is worth £18m. Funny thing is, he is 33. What idiots

I may buy it. I actually like The Sunday Times. I used to get it every week. But there was so much reading in it it used to take me till the following Saturday to finish it.
