Something that occured to me tonight ...

It's 1:30am, and I've just arrived home ... I fancied a pizza so walked to ASDA, and all the way I found myself looking over my shoulder. I'm currently at home in a town I've lived in for the past 18 years.

However, if I'm at Uni, I sometimes go to London and arrive home in Leicester at about 3am, and I find myself perfectly fine wandering back to my halls, which means me crossing practically the whole city.

Maybe I know my hometown better, so I'm more aware of potential problems, or maybe I don't know my Uni city well enough ...

Do you feel safer in a town or a city, or somewhere you know well, or less well?

I live in what is generally considered to be a low crime area, the odd car break in or tyres slashed etc but no shootings, murders, robberies and so on compared with 10 miles away but if I am going out anywhere at night be it my town or any other town I always make sure I am "tooled up" just incase anything happened

Yes it is probably irresponsible for me to have a knuckleduster but it is purely a precautionary measure and have never had to use it or threaten to use it but late at night I do not feel nervous and the reason is I know I have the knuckleduster should I get jumped

Indeed the only looking over my shoulder I ever do is to see if any police officers are about as carrying one of those things would likely see me in court but I have no regrets, for someone with an overly paranoid nature like me it is better to be safe than sorry.

I'd never go out at that time, no matter where I was.

In general if I'm shopping or something I do prefer to be around lots of people than walking by myself down some alley.

Yes I can understand that for sure, it is less comfortable for a woman/girl to be out late at night especially alone than it is for a man

Were I female I would probably not go out at night at all unless it was in a group

I'm originally from Dundee, a fairly small city in Scotland, I live in Camden, before that I lived in Hackney and if you go by what the media says says and implies about these places I could be talking about Beirut or Baghdad on a bad night  .... I've managed to survive perfectly okay without the need for concealed weapons (Yes Craig, that was directed at you a bit.... :P ), I've never been attacked or even threatened to a degree where I felt genuinely frightened for my safety/life, so, I'm just wondering if a lot of this is just media hype to be honest.... Yes, i know that random violence does occur, but you're talking about a city of 7 million people, well, duh, crime is gonna happen when you're talking about these sorts of statistics just because of human nature....

We had violence and murder and mayhem on the streets of London since the Romans built the damn place, and frankly, I dont believe the streets of London are any less safe now than they were in Victorian times.... Frankly, I dont think any more about wandering around my present manor after dark than I did about wandering the streets of Dundee....

I think you are right tbh Scott about the media hype although I do have a couple of friends and an uncle who have been mugged on a night out, I have never been nor have I been assaulted but I would like to think that in the event I was I would have "back up" in the form of my knuckle duster in case things went pete tong in a confrontation late at night.

I am one of those types that leave nothing to chance really as I know that the day I accidently leave the knuckle duster at home on a night out will be the day I am surrounded by a gang of muggers at a cashpoint would be just my luck

The answer to that then is - dont use a cashpoint at night.... , I know I would never even think of it, well, unless it was inside one of the 24-hour Sainsbury stores and I was using one of their ATMs, that's pretty safe.... The Sainsbury in Camden always has a security guard patrolling that particular area, so it's cool....

Actually, I do wear my steel toe-capped New Rock boots when I go out more often than not, maybe that's why no one tends to mess with me....   . Trust me, you get kicked in the goolies with one of those babies you are going down and NOT getting up again for a long time....

The area in which I live, doesn't thankfully, experience high levels of crime, but about four years ago, I was mugged at knifepoint at 1.30 in the afternoon, just minutes from my home. It did affect me for quite some time, but now, apart from not carrying my debit/credit cards in my handbag alongside my cheque book, I don't feel particularly scared. However, I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable walking alone after dark.

I refuse to be 'scared' to live my life.

I know it is not always the most sensible attitude, but why can't I walk through the town at night?

What right has anyone to stop me?

A drunken youth attempted to mug me once - told him to f*** off - and he did!

I, personally, think the media has people scared to live. Bad things happen - but they are rare.

I refuse to be told what to do. I am an intelligent adult, I can weigh up potential dangers and my ability to handle them.

There is a wonderful new cycle path, along the canal, through the scrap of green land we have round here. It runs most of the way between home and work.

"No you can't go on there alone - you may get murdered!!"

Bog off - it was built for me not murderers. In the summer I cycle to work, I meet dog walkers and other cyclists - no axe murderes (yet ;) )

This same path has a naked jogger - he jogs at midnight. He does no harm to anyone. ..... and he hasn't been murdered yet either ;)

Perhaps I've just been lucky but I regularly stay out to the early morning and often walk alone in any city I'm in. I love cities when they're quiet in the early hours. Sure, I've had the odd drunk being annoying, the odd yob clowning around, but I have never felt intimidated or scared anywhere I've been from country village to large cities like London and Paris.
