Posted April 28, 200718 yr James Grady scored in the final minute of the final game to hand Gretna an amazing victory that clinched promotion and consigned Ross County to the drop. Michael Gardyne blasted County into the lead from the edge of the box. Nicky Deverdics replied four minutes later from close range and Grady broke clear to fire Gretna ahead. Deiarmuid O'Carroll bundled an equaliser, but Grady broke clear to fire Gretna ahead and deny St Johnstone promotion in a dramatic finish. By that time, County had already gone down after Airdrie beat Queen of the South. Grady had been preferred to David Graham up front for Gretna with the team leading the league by a point struggling to score goals in recent weeks. David Nicholls also returned from suspension to replace the injured Steven Hogg in the Gretna midfield. Mark McCulloch returned to the County defence following his ban, while the returning Martin Scott and Hugh Robertson had to make do with places on the bench. It was County who broke the deadlock after 30 minutes, Gardyne hammering the ball into the top left-hand corner from edge of the box. But Gretna drew level four minutes later when Grady's flick from a Nicholls free-kick was saved by Craig Samson and Deverdics scrambled the ball home. And it looked like the title was heading to Gretna when Nicholls' flick-on sent Grady clear and the veteran strike fired past the advancing goalkeeper. However, it was level again four minutes into the second half when a Gardyne cross was headed on by Don Cowie and O'Carroll bundled in the equaliser. The drama was not over yet and Grady's breakaway goal sent Gretna to the SPL for the first time in their history with their third title in a row. from bbc sport!
April 28, 200718 yr Fantastic news, i've been following their progress for a couple of years now so it'll be interesting to see what happens next year for them ^_^
April 28, 200718 yr Is good for Gretna, but I doubt they'll be able to make it a 4th consecutive title in a row in the SPL. In other news, Leeds United got releagted today.
April 28, 200718 yr Author In other news, Leeds United got releagted today. No they didn't you fool :P they are so going to thrash Derby by 10goals next sunday!!! (NOT)
April 28, 200718 yr I'm so pleased for them. I was so worried towards the end that St. Johnstone were gonna go above them, but I'm dead glad Gretna have managed it. :D
April 28, 200718 yr It shows how much of a joke the Scottish league is  They were nowhere in the English league yet they go into the Scottish league and go straight into the Premiership! I'd laugh if they finished in the top three
April 28, 200718 yr Oh where were they before they entered Scottish Division Three? Because they don't seem to go any lower than that do they? As East Stirling have finished bottom of it five years in a row now!
April 28, 200718 yr They're on the border of England and Scotland so they could basically play in either league if they wanted! But before they were put into the Scottish Third Division they were basically nowhere in the English League (many divisions below the Conference North and South) yet they are able to perform like that in the Scottish league. Most Scottish Premiership clubs are of League 1/2 standard however so it'd be an achievement to do well in there considering where they once were.
April 28, 200718 yr They do have a millioniare owner who pumps money into them however. It will be interesting to see how they cope in the premier division, could finish mid table with a bit of luck. The problem now is their ground is tiny and not suitable for the top division so they will have to play all their home games somewhere else, and recently they only had 88 away fans at a game. There is no way they would survive without the owner picking up the tab.
April 28, 200718 yr Yeah they're in the process of having a groundshare with Motherwell approved at the moment.
April 28, 200718 yr I think its an abomination and frankly an embarassment to Scottish football that theyre in the SPL. I wanted St Johnstone up this year. Whats Gretna actually going to bring to the top flight? NOTHING. c**p football, scrappy, low class, no flare, fat footballers and 50 fans. its horrendous.

They could be the dark horse of the league, it will keep me more interested in it anyway. The SPL has been incredibly boring for years. -_-
