The father of a 10-year-old boy made subject of an anti-social behaviour order claims that his son's notoriety will encourage other young tearaways to get their own Asbos so they can "be on the telly".

Nigel Bird, 44, said that his son Anthony's school friends had laughed at the furore. The married father of five reacted angrily to remarks by Tony Blair which appeared to imply that he was the head of "a failing family".

Anthony, of Teesville, Middlesbrough, last week became one of the youngest children in Britain to receive an Asbo after having more than 60 police incidents recorded against him for misdemeanours including assault, criminal damage, drinking in public and swearing at police.

Under the terms of the order handed down at Teesside Youth Court, he is banned from throwing things, threatening or annoying staff in two local shops, drinking alcohol and using insults and threats.

Mr Bird, a general trader, received a three-month parenting order.

He said: "I said to the social workers, 'All you have done is get every hooligan in the country wanting to be in the papers or on the telly'.

"The authorities have persecuted a 10-year-old kid. If the magistrate hadn't let his name be published - he would just have had his Asbo and got on with his life."

Mr Bird, who lives with his wife Catherine, 41, was particularly incensed by comments made about the case by the Prime Minister in an article in The Daily Telegraph yesterday. Mr Blair wrote: "Of course it's shocking that a 10-year-old was causing such mayhem. But the answer, I am afraid, is neither to give his father more benefit or for society to explain why such behaviour is wrong."

Mr Blair confessed that his early attempts to tackle anti-social behaviour through public investment in poor areas had been "incomplete and misguided - in the sense that it will not deal with this small and unrepresentative minority".

He added: "I now think the answer is to add measures that target failing and dysfunctional families early."

Mr Bird said: "Mr Blair is a problem Prime Minister. He should have looked into it more before he opened his mouth. No way is my family out of control. They have put Anthony across as if he's a tearaway, but believe me, he's a little angel, a good kid."

His son, he insisted, had committed only minor infringements and was upset by the Asbo and subsequent publicity. He said of community support officers: "As soon as they see a group of kids, they are straight over. In some ways that's a good thing, but sometimes they could approach things better."

Of course he's a little angel and his father doesn't bear any responsibility for the way he's behaving  We've heard it all before. As for these ASBOs, I'm really not sure if they're working. We were talking about these before when it was said that the kids are considering that they're a 'badge of honour'.

I was gonna say I've never heard of Teesville  plus its in Redcar -_-

typical of the press trying to hammer everything to Middlesbrough

This guy is really the perfect example of what I've been talking about on the other thread about the "good manners" classes.... What a stupid c/unt... If I even caused a fraction of the sh!!te his bloody offspring is causing my folks would've dragged me down to the local nick and made them lock me up in the cells for the night....

ASBOs...? Not worth the paper they're written on... Bring back the Borstals....

Borstals wernt perfect either mate, seen the movie Scum?

Obviously you wouldn't bring them back as they were.... I'm just sick of these little Chav scum being mollycoddled is all... "Short, sharp, shock" is what they need mate....

Fair point, i think we should introduce some sort of boot camp or National service.

I was in favour of that but then someone rightfully pointed out that you will merely have fitter and better trained in handguns chavs which is a fair point

I think there should be labour/work camps, get the chavs doing 16 hours a day hard labour for the period of their sentences

I reckon a good idea would be to make them to work tbh... To actually work to repair the damage they've done... If they're daubing grafitti "tags" around, make the little fukkers clean it all off with a bucket of water and soap and a scrubbing brush.... If they're going around nicking cars, make them wash and clean cars until they've earned enough money in order to pay the owner to replace their stolen vehicle.... "Punishment fitting crime" is a phrase that springs to mind.... Yeah, okay, sounds like a "Daily Mail" editorial dunnit.....

lol does sound a bit like that

Good in theory but what about under age drinkers, muggers, pissheads who commit assaults outside pubs and so on, there is no punishment that would fit crime so I still think ALL criminals should be doing the American equivalent of breaking rocks from dawn till dusk in work camps for the duration of their sentences, prison is too soft these days and not a deterrent so get them breaking rocks, digging deep ditches, searching for landmines in Iraq and so on

Maybe harsh but can't we just stone them ^_^

But yes in reality, there are some crimes that just don't have an equivalent punishment within reason.
