Posted April 29, 200718 yr THE Labour party is facing a voting scandal on the eve of this week’s local elections after an undercover investigation by The Sunday Times. Keith Wakefield, the leader of the Labour group on Leeds city council, told party canvassers to help voters, many of whom were elderly, to complete their postal ballots. Student activists, including an undercover reporter, were then told by another councillor to take away the postal voting forms, hide them as they left people’s homes and only post them later if they were for Labour. The councillor, Graham Hyde, admitted, in a secretly tape-recorded meeting, that he thought the instructions to collect the postal votes were “illegal”. Hyde, a parliamentary aide to a former Labour whip, warned the student activists that after collecting votes: “Don’t get caught with any on you. We are not supposed to collect them.” He even joked about flushing postal ballots down the lavatory if they were for the Liberal Democrats. Responding to the Sunday Times revelations, David Crompton, assistant chief constable of West Yorkshire, said: “This is extremely sharp practice and a clear breach of the guidelines.” Police say they will study a dossier of the newspaper’s evidence. Martin Hamilton, of the Leeds Liberal Democrats, said: “I want the police to follow this up urgently.” It is the first hard evidence of Labour flouting the official electoral code of conduct amid desperation over the party’s prospects in Thursday’s polls. Last week residents in the affected area said they felt pressured by Labour officials to hand over postal votes. Both Wakefield and Hyde deny improper behaviour. This just shows the depths to which the labour party are willing to sink to hold on to the last remnants of power. This is disgraceful!
April 30, 200718 yr This is probably the worst case of Govt gerrymandering since the Tories pulled their stunt in the 1980s with the Westminster housing scandal.... <_< I seriously want to see heads roll in this one, Nu Labour is quite clearly abusing their power. Thank God there are still actually some Student activists out there despite the best efforts of the Tories and Nu Labour to destroy student activism with their various higher education policies, we'd've probably never heard about this otherwise.... Cheers Bri, you've given me yet another excuse to hate this Govt.... Isn't it ironic, we go into Iraq and Afghanistan supposedly to 'spread democracy', then in this country our Govt tries to erode every hard-fought democratic principle our brothers and sisters in the Chartist, Suffragette and original Labour Movement ever accomplished..... Disgusting.... <_< <_< The Labour Party has no right to call itself by the name anymore, they're as bad as the Tories ever were.... <_<
April 30, 200718 yr Good to know the police are looking into this ^_^ hopefully those responsible will end up behind bars where they belong This is the sort of thing you expect with Robert Mugabe not a so called civilised democracy

Who was it again - Dame Shirley Porter...?? <_< <_< Read this mate..... http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Article/...4319908,00.html

I mean, come on, it was right on their doorstep, literally - WESTMINSTER....  If the Westminster-based Tory Govt never knew what was going on, then that makes them utterly incompetent IMO...... So, take your pick between corrupt or incompetent mate.... Neither is a particularly good option really is it...?

We weren't perfect but were saints compared with the current regime IMHO, thank god they are on their way out to the political winderness for the next 10 years or more :)
April 30, 200718 yr We weren't perfect but were saints compared with the current regime IMHO, thank god they are on their way out to the political winderness for the next 10 years or more :) i totally disagree... the tories were far worse at manipulating things to suit. like pushing for mass floridisation in drinking water... who was the md of the flouride making plant?..... d thatcher! then theres the whole 'selling off the family silver' in order to bribe punters votes... just look how many ended up in jail... archer, aitken, etc. when this lot have as many jailed then id agree... until then... not. and nu labour are not on their way out.... people might well be fed up of blair, but theres no one offering a viable alternative with even now the tories doing awful in the op polls.

Would not be surprised to see Lord Levy doing bird before too long and rightly so and also Mandelson should have been jailed for mortgage fraud but as ever Blair pulled a few strings Archer was not a cabinet minister at the time of his arrest nor was he an MP he was a candidate for the mayor of London so should not be compared with say Mandelson All politicians are corrupt and make Arthur Daley seem honest I am under no illusion about that

Actually, to be quite honest Rob, Craig, the last Tory regime and the curren Nu Labour regime are as alike two black, corrupt, evil little peas in a pod as far as I'm concerned - as rotten and throroughly degenerate as each other.... You can draw parallels between both regimes in the sorts of sh!t they've been getting up to... Gerrymandering and voting manipulation - check, thoroughly unjustified wars - check; buying up American weapons of war much to the disgust of the British public - check; kissing the arse of America and going along with just about everything the US does - check; creating 'bogeymen' when there really are none - check; scapegoating certain groups in society - check; various Cabinet members doing dodgy deals - check; the utilisation of Stealth Taxes, VAT, etc which arse-rape the elderly, the unemployed and the majority who are on relatively low incomes, while the rich 5% get huge tax-breaks.... - check; 'Cash for honours' - check; complete disregard of the processes of Parliament - check; Privatisation - check; fukkin up the education and Health service - check..... I could go on, but the list is really fukkin' endless...... I hated the Tories and everything they did, I would be a hypocrite if I just let Labour off the hook... B-Liar is just Thatcher in drag IMO.... Time to give the Lib Dems a chance....

May 2, 200718 yr I just got round to reading my Sunday Times last night. Good grief, this story is absolutely shocking. The whole postal voting system is sooooo open to abuse.
May 2, 200718 yr I'm spluttering over my keyboard here.... does Vic REALLY think the Tories were any less corrupt, deceitful, warmongering or evil than this Labour government? I can only assume Mr Vega was too drunk on champagne to remember the whole of the 80s and Thatcher's Nazi bootboy regime....
