LUCIE SILVAS

The sexy singer reveals all about mentor Gary Barlow, writing for the stars and why she's staying covered up!

Lucie Silvas may only be 29 years old but she's already been in the music industry for over ten years. While success in the charts these days may be all about going in at number one, Lucie has earned her music striped the good old-fashioned way - good old hard graft! Years of touring may have garnered critical acclaim and a devoted fan base, but her chart success has until now been modest. With the release of her album Breathe In in 2004, and with her current album The Same Side, Lucie has finally and deservedly earned the sort of chart success her undoubted talent merits. But OK! could have told you ten years ago that this girl was going to be a star when we heard her first single It's Too Late.

As you'd expect, her journed has been an interesting one, writing for other successful artists, as well as her stint as a back-up singer. What it has done is given Lucie a great attitude about a career in an industry fraught with competition and rejection, and when OK! meets Lucie it's clear that this is one star not prone to diva tantrums and whose feet have been firmly kept on the ground.

Lucie is in fact a real giggle, and here she tells us why Gary Barlow took her under his wing, why she enjoyed hanging out with Charlotte Church and how she fits her gorgeous beau boyfriend Geordan Murphy into her hectic schedule...

You performed with Charlotte Church on her show recently - is she as much fun as she seems?

She's such a nice girl and she's great fun to be around. I enjoyed spending time with her.

With the size-zero debate raging, Charlotte definitely seems as though she's a great role model...

What makes Charlotte a good role model is that she has a great attitude. People love Charlotte because she's so down-to-earth and she doesn't care what people think. She has a lovely body, plus she's healthy. She's a great role model because she's confident and happy.

You have a lot in common with Charlotte - you're both singers and you both date strapping international rugby stars...

Geordan and I don't get anywhere near the attention that Charlotte and Gavin get but I really admire how they deal with it. They just keep out of the way and enjoy their lives.

Your career and Geordan's rugby commitments must mean you spend a lot of time apart...

In the beginning it was hard but we've been together seven years so when we know we're going to be apart for a while we're prepared for it. It sucks but we're better at dealing with it. He's lovely and I love spending time at home with him.

After seven years together, are you planning to tie the knot?

You'll have to ask him about that! He's so unpredictable. I can never second guess him.

Your good pal Gary Barlow is enjoying a career revival at the moment - how did you get to know him?

I was a backing singer for Gary ages ago when he went solo after Take That split. It gave me a real insight into what it's like to be a big star. It scared me a little bit because I was thinking, do I reall want to be in the pop world? It's quite full-on.

Was he a bit of an inspiration to you?

Gary taught me a lot about handling the business. He was going through some changing times at that point and took me under his wing and that was really helpful.

Do you see him much now that he's back in the spotlight?

We see each other out and about and he's so happy. He's very comfortable in his own skin and he's with three of his mates and they are having the time of their lives, professionally and personally.

You're only 29 years old but you're something of a music veteran. You must enjoy the business to still be doing it after 10 years...

It has taken the better part of ten years to get to the second album. But I've enjoyed every minute of it because I've been on tour - there have been good times, bad times, exciting times. It's been unbelievable. The life you lead is so strange when you're on tour and you never get used to it. I feel more relaxed about my career than I ever have before.

Did you ever see novelty pop acts at number one and want to pull your hair out?

I have looked at things and thought, that irritates the **** out of me! Yes, of course a lot of things like that come along, but, likewise, hits will come along that I love. But it is really hard looking at the chart sometimes.

What's the secret to success?

Sometimes you're in the right place at the right time and it works. Sometimes a song connects with people. I've definitely had to work harder than that. And I can't put my finger on it - I'm always asking myself how I can improve and how I can get better. But I just want to carry on and enjoy what I'm doing and not get bogged down in the pressure of having to do well.

Posing semi-naked has helped some female artists hit the top of the charts - was that something you ever considered?

I did a lads' mag very early on in my career. I did ask myself why I was doing it but I just treated it as a bit of a laugh and I look back on those shots now and think, why? There are limits to what you do - I'm not completely reserved but I don't show a hell of a lot of skin. I'm not a raunchy or provocative person but I'm not against it. I would never rule out anything, but certainly posing nude or in a bikini would never happen.

You're actually had quite a lot of success writing for other people, haven't you?

I wrote for Will Young, the song Who Am I is probably the biggest single I had. I also wrote Liberty X's track Jumpin' and some pop stuff for S Club and Rachel Stevens. A lot of it has been quite poppy so it's been a bit of fun to do on the side.

What's your favourite part of the job?

I love performing live and I'm always saying I'll do more live gigs - whether it's in front of thousands of people or 50 people in a bar, I don't mind. I'm just always amazed that people have made the effort to come out. Live is the ultimate thing - it's such a huge buzz.

Lucie's album 'The Same Side' is available now.

She looks stunning! The interview I found funny I admit but I don't know why they have to now big up Charlotte Church everytime Lucie is about. Lucie sings and looks better than Charlotte any day of the week!
