May 20, 200718 yr They're only traditional because that's what you've been brought up as believing. If you were given horse to eat from a young age you wouldn't know any different. Disagree Lucy, they are traditional because again they are bred purely for food not what we have been bought up to believe whereas horses are not bred for food so are not traditional meat If before you turned veggie you were offered horse meat to eat would you have eaten it ?

No, because I haven't been brought up thinking it's ok to eat horses. You could say that with dog too. It's ok to eat it in some countries and they think nothing of it, yet we think it's disgusting. I don't buy the whole 'bred for food' thing as a justification to eat meat anyway.
May 20, 200718 yr I don't buy the whole 'bred for food' thing as a justification to eat meat anyway. But what purpose do those particular animals serve other than as food ? they are not pets, they are not sporting animals or serve any policing purposes etc so they are simply there to graze and then be eaten.
May 20, 200718 yr But what purpose do those particular animals serve other than as food ? they are not pets, they are not sporting animals or serve any policing purposes etc so they are simply there to graze and then be eaten. Why do they need a purpose? Why can't they just live? And they have other purposes anyway like wool/milk. When you think of little lambs in a field do you honesty not feel guilty at all?
May 20, 200718 yr When you think of little lambs in a field do you honesty not feel guilty at all? Yeah I do a bit but then again the little lamb would unlikely have ever been born but for its role in the food chain, it simply would not have existed in the first place But I can't eat duck as do feel guilty given I used to feed ducks in the park a lot etc when I was a kid
May 20, 200718 yr Yeah I do a bit but then again the little lamb would unlikely have ever been born but for its role in the food chain, it simply would not have existed in the first place But I can't eat duck as do feel guilty given I used to feed ducks in the park a lot etc when I was a kid Yeah it would have. Sheep would still have lambs. And that last sentence just makes you sound like a hypocrite.
May 20, 200718 yr Yeah it would have. Sheep would still have lambs. And that last sentence just makes you sound like a hypocrite. Sheep would likely have been extinct before you were even born were there not demand for lamb, were it not for people eating lamb sheep's bloodline would have been killed off ages ago and we would be talking about sheep in the same way as dodo's and duck billed platypus' I am not a hypocrite because while duck is a chinese delicacy ducks are not bred for food :)
May 20, 200718 yr I am not a hypocrite because while duck is a chinese delicacy ducks are not bred for food :) not true..... besides wild ducks are managed, habitats etc, in order to boost their population so some can be shot for the table.
May 21, 200718 yr I am not a hypocrite because while duck is a chinese delicacy ducks are not bred for food :) Rubbish, of course they are... You never heard of "Gresshingham Duck" or Duck A'l'orange...? Duck meat is on sale in supermarkets up and down the country mate... Duck's been on the British dinner table for quite some time mate, it is by NO means only a Chinese thing.....
May 21, 200718 yr did anyone see Paul Meton in China tonight on five? perhaps he would have like to have tasted horse's meat rather that snake's c**k.
May 22, 200718 yr I don't think I would eat it, but I don't see what's wrong with it considering I eat chicken, beef, and pork...
June 4, 200718 yr Yeah it would have. Sheep would still have lambs. That field full of lambs is most likely the result of the farmer and his syringe - those sheep wouldn't have had lambs but for the food chain. and Craig - do you think that row of plastic wrapped ducks in the freezer at asda were all caught in the park? Of course ducks are reared for food!! Farmers don't have them wandering round thier farm yards just to make the place look pretty ;)
June 12, 200718 yr If i wasn't a vegetarian i probably would try it. But because i'm a vegetarian i wouldn't try it, but respect it's part of certain cultures and it's no different to eating cows really. Edited June 12, 200718 yr by Lyricaldreamer
June 12, 200718 yr I had never eaten rabbits because when I remember what the look like I almost start to cry. But on the other side I like chickens although they are also sooooo cute. So there is no rule what to eat or not to eat. It all depends in what kind of culture you live in. Some cultures eat rats, snakes, but don't eat cows, etc. So eat what you want and what u like
June 12, 200718 yr Yeah that's a really good way to look at it Irene. I don't eat meat because of moral reasons, but i'm fine with people who eat meat, i know that may sound weird. But i only start to have problems when people question me and just don't shut up about it.

June 13, 200718 yr That's the problem with the world today....they judge people by anything they say or do
