Mish Mash hit number one

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

It’s seven years since ATB’s 9PM (Till I Come) became the Data label’s first release, and the Ministry of Sound imprint has been highly successful ever since, most recently reaching the Top 10 of the sales chart with DHT’s Listen To Your Heart in December.

Speechless by Mish Mash is set to become Data’s 100th release and as such a major priority – luckily it is worthy of the accolade, being a slick, sophisticated and extremely uplifting slab of disco that romps to the top of the Upfront Chart this week with some ease, finishing up more than 20% ahead of Sara Jorge’s Beautiful World, which is runner-up for the second week in a row.

Data has never actually had as many records in the chart at one time as it has at present with no fewer than 12 of them dotted around the Top 100. Aside from Speechless, there’s Joey Negro’s Make A Move On Me (number 10), Boogie Pimps’ Music In Me (number 21), David Morales’ How Would U Feel (number 27), Switch’s A Bit Patchy (number 44), Porno’s Music Power (number 47), Scape’s Be My Friend (number 56), Supermode’s Tell Me Why (number 60), Beatfreakz’s Somebody’s Watching Me (number 65), Cajmere’s Say You Will (number 85), Tom Novy’s Your Body (number 86) and Stunt’s Raindrops (number 100). Many of those outside the Top 40 have yet to receive full club servicing, and will likely become bigger hits when they do.

Meanwhile, trance takes over at the top of the Commerical Pop Chart courtesy of Wanna Be Free by Paradise, which jumps 12-1 this week. It’s gone one better than Paradise’s 2005 single See The Light, which peaked at number 2. On the Upfront Chart, where See The Light reached number 14, Wanna Be Free jumps 34-15 this week.

The all-conquering Pussycat Dolls jump 6-1 on the Urban Chart, with their third single Beep wins a tight three way fight with Ne-Yo’s So Sick, which dips 1-2 after a fortnight at the top, and Black Eyed Peas’ Pump It, a 12-3 climber. The trio are separated from each other by less than 2%. The PCD single includes an assist from BEP’s Will.I.Am, whose busy schedule recently also including helming the new Sergio Mendes album.

Dream debut for Deep Dish

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Washington-based Iranian duo Deep Dish have been one of the most successful and consistent acts on the Upfront Club Chart in the past 18 months, topping the chart with Flashdance in September 2004., returning to the summit in June 2005 with Say Hello, and completing a hat-trick of number ones with the Sacremento EP last November.

It’s no surprise to find they rack up their fourth straight number one with their excellent cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams, with a guest vocal from the band’s Stevie Nicks likely to guide it past the fairly disappointing number 24 singles chart peak scaled by the original in 1977.

While Deep Dish’s record of success on the Upfront Club Chart is superb, their singles have never had the same impact on the Commercial Pop Chart, with Flashdance peaking there at number 10, and both Say Hello and Sacramento reaching number 20 – but Dreams, jumps 6-1 on that chart this week, to become their first number one.

Among Deep Dish’s fellow celebrity DJs, Dreams has been getting support from the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, Daniel Davoli, Herd & Fitz, Deepgroove and Pete Tong, who made it his Essential New Tune on Radio One in January.

Tong’s Radio One colleagues have yet to pledge full support but the record’s radio profile is growing ahead of commercial release today, (March 13), with most enthusiastic supporters Cool FM, Wave 105, Citybeat 96.7 FM, Dream 100 FM, Northsound 1 and Tay FM all on schedule to play the track more than 20 times apiece last week.

Mish Mash’s Speechless and Sugababes’ Red Dress – both of which are also definitely destined to become crossover hits on commercial release – complete the top three on both the Upfront and Commercial Pop Charts, with Mish Mash taking runners-up spot on the Upfront list, and Sugababes second on the Commerical Pop rundown.

Meanwile, after ceding pole position to Pussycat Dolls’ Beep last week, Ne Yo’s So Sick claws its way back to the top of the Urban chart. Occupying pole position for the third time in four weeks, it faces a new challenge from Jamie Foxx’s Unpredictable, which jumps 7-2, and is a mere 4% in arrears.

14 (9) SOS (Message In A Bottle) - Filterfunk

Beatfreakz stay on top

By Alan Jones

Beatfreakz’ version of Rockwell’s 1984 hit Somebody’s Watchin’ Me shot to the top of the Upfront Chart last week, and continues in pole position on the latest list. Former nearest challenger Rob Boskamp’s version of Sheryl Lee Ralph’s cult classic In The Evening sinks 2-13, to be replaced in the runners-up spot by Gav McCall’s I’m Alright, which trails the Beatfreakz record by a shade under 9%.

Despite the same again scenario at the top, there is more activity in the rest of the chart than for a very long time. Last week’s intake of 16 new entries in the Top 100 is supplemented by a further 17 newcomers, making the highest two week tally of the century to date.

Leading the new chart invaders is a remake of Loleatta Holloway’s Love Sensation by Eddie Thoneick & Kurd Maverick, which debuts very strongly at number four – the highest new entry on the chart since Madonna’s Hung Up made its maiden appearance in the same position last November. There is a potential spike in its wheels in the form of a new mix of Loleatta Holloway’s on the Gusto label, which itself makes its chart debut this week at number 94.

Meanwhile, Gusto’s current priority, New Horizon by John Parr vs Tommyknockers, jumps 10-1 on the Commerical Pop Chart, nudging narrowly ahead of Blaze’s Most Precious Love, which remains at number two.

New Horizon is a new version of AOR rocker John Parr’s 1985 hit St Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion), with re-recorded vocals from Parr on a track put together by Si Paul of Lost Witness and Dan Bewick of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. And the spate of danced-up versions of old hits with new vocals from original vocalists continues with First Time by Sunblock ft Robin Block, the highest new entry on this week’s Commercial Pop Chart at number eight. Beck’s original, based on a Diet Coke advert, topped the sales chart in 1988.

Finally, having spent five weeks atop the Urban Club Chart with his debut single Run It! Prior to the record’s retail success, talented new R&B hope Chris Brown jumps 3-1 with follow-up Yo (Excuse Me Miss) this week. In a fiercely competitive and very close top five, Brown ended up just 2% ahead of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy.

Teamsters are sizzling hot

By Alan Jones

From musicweek

Uplifting funky house brings home the bacon on both the Upfront and Commercial Pop Chart this week, with Danish duo Morjac masquerading as Teamsters and jumping to the top of both charts with Feels Like Love. With mixes by The Soul Avengerz and King Unique, it jumps 4-1 on the Upfront chart and 12-1 on the Commercial Pop list.

Due commercially on 22 May, it is the latest club success for EMI’s Positiva imprint, which has had three number one Upfront Club Chart hits already this year. The others – Deep Dish’s Dreams and The Shapeshifters’ Incredible – both turned their club chart success into Top 20 sales success. Incredible peaked at No.12 while Dreams is set to appear in the Top 20 of this week’s chart.

Feels Like Love initially appeared on limited pressings on the Montana label, and has been blessed with airplay from all three of Radio One’s dance denizens (Pete Tong, Judge Jules and Dave Pearce), although it has yet to make the station’s playlist. A plethora of other high-profile DJs are also supporting it, including Seb Fontaine, Sister Bliss, Pete Heller, Herd & Fitz, The Beginerz, Michael Gray and Tall Paul, not to mention Seamus Hall, David Clarke, Redanka, The Disciples Of Sound, Way Out West and K-Klass.

Teamsters’ twin triumph denies Rihanna of a unique hat trick – her S.O.S. jumps 6-1 on the Urban Chart, where it has a slender majority of less the 1% over Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy – which is number two for the third week in a row – but has to settle for runners-up slot on both of the other charts. With suitable floor-filling mixes from Moto Blanco and Jason Nevins, S.O.S. trails Teamster by 9% on the Upfront chart and 6% on the Commercial Pop list. Rihanna’s Urban Chart success brings to an end the three-week reign of Yo (Excuse Me Miss) by Chris Brown, which slides 1-4.

Meanwhile, last week’s number one Upfront hit – Eddie Thoneick and Kurd Maverick’s remake of Love Sensation – dips to number four and is joined in the Top 10 by Loleatta Holloway’s remixed original, which sprints 37-8. Holloway is also gaining ground on Thonick and Maverick on the Commerical Pop Chart, where she improves 30-21, while they slide 4-18.
