May 12, 200718 yr Its going to be a very interesting debate on here the day she dies lol although I hope it a long long way away Well this is what I will be singing when it happens: Tramp The Dirt Down (Elvis Costello 1989) I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain She spills with compassion, as that young child's face in her hands she grips Can you imagine all that greed and avarice coming down on that child's lips Well I hope I don't die too soon I pray the Lord my soul to save Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live long enough to savour That's when they finally put you in the ground I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down When England was the whore of the world Margeret [sic] was her madam And the future looked as bright and as clear as the black tarmacadam Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't haunted by every tiny detail 'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands all she thought of was betrayal And now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long run Try telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his only son And how it's only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamt Try telling him the subtle difference between justice and contempt Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful discontent When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment And then expect you to say "Thank you" straighten up, look proud and pleased Because you've only got the symptoms, you haven't got the whole disease Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can filled up with dreams then poured down the drain Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and maimed Who takes all the glory and none of the shame Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord your soul to keep I think I'll be going before we fold our arms and start to weep I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap 'Cos when they finally put you in the ground They'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down
May 12, 200718 yr Author You won't be very pleased that Maggie has made the top 5 shortlist of the Greatest Living Briton poll in the Sun. :P yes, but Robbie Williams made that list, too, so it's hardly a credible or serious shortlist. And as for Maggie dying - bring it on, Wales needs some good street parties....
May 12, 200718 yr Well whoopee do about Margaret Thatcher making the Top 5 Greatest Living Brits. Well Done to the Conservative HQ and their website for orchestrating a campaign to vote for Maggie in the Greatest & for Tony Blair in the Worst categories. I hope they are really proud of themselves in supporting a petty campaign sponsored by Marks & Spencer & The Sun newspaper, orchestrated by SyCo (Simon Cowell's company) where the Final is held on ITV on May 21st. The idea of phoning up to make the repulsive Simon Cowell even richer than he is currently, is exactly the sort of enterprise that Thatcher would heartedly approve of. Out of the five finalists: Margaret Thatcher Julie Andrews The Queen Paul McCartney Robbie Williams Only the former Beatle is worthy of a place on that list. Where are David Attenborough, Alan Bennett, David Bowie, Richard Branson, Sean Connery, Dame Judi Dench or Morrissey for example. Well this is typical Simon Cowell through & through, nick an idea that the BBC did far better remember BBC Greatest Living Icons last year on BBC 2 and turn it into a popularist lowest common denominator vote (I like Robbie Williams but even he would be utterly embarrassed to have made the Top 20 let alone a Top 5 of this list) to make Simon Cowell even richer.
May 12, 200718 yr See that proves it is a myth that Maggie was hated by the working class, 99% of Sun readers are working class people like builders, white van men, taxi drivers and so on so for the readers of the paper that is the voice of the working class to vote her in the Top 5 people ever shows her popularity among the working class is more than has been claimed .........in other words thatcher was voted for by thickies who didnt realise that she wasnt for them.
May 12, 200718 yr i detest thatcher with a passion, i hope her death is unkind to her, and i for one will be rejoicing! just like i did when she was kicked out of office.

May 13, 200718 yr Yes but people who read the Sun aren't exactly the most intelligent of individuals  In a nutshell 'Wicky.... BUT, this "poll" The Sun actually conducted, just how many actually voted in it...? And I reckon that even if The Scottish Sun were to do a similar poll, Thatcher would come nowhere near, it's only people South of Birmingham that are voting for Thatch if you ask me, I very much doubt that folks in Newcastle, Yorkshire, Lancashire, etc are voting for Thatcher....
May 15, 200718 yr Can I just say I find some of the comments in here about Margaret Thatcher's death absolutely sick and completely unnecessary for people to express their views. It is true that Thatcher was a very strong and controversial leader due to her extreme policies, though I think many people forget that she came to power off the back of the 'winter of discontent' in which trade unions sent the country into disrepair and the economy collapsed, making it a very extreme time. The powerful legislation she brought in was required in order to stop these groups from rioting and to rebuild the economy by allowing Britain adapt and compete on a global scale once again. Had she not done so then we would certainly be living in a far worse country today - ruled by unelected bodies representing the vocal few.
May 15, 200718 yr Author brunoboi... the thing I find sick and tasteless and totally, utterly unnecessary on this thread is people like you claiming Thatcher helped Britain in ANY way. She helped middle England.... NOT Scotland, which she almost destroyed, NOT Wales, which she did her level best to starve to death.

She helped middle England.... NOT Scotland, which she almost destroyed, NOT Wales, which she did her level best to starve to death. Maggie put this country back on its feet and gave us great standing in the world again Russ You are 2 years younger than me mate so if I remember the power cuts, green goddesses, 3 day week, Healey going cap in hand to the IMF begging for money, hyper inflation, rubbish piling up in the streets, dead unburied and so on so will you, desperate times called for desperate measures and it was necessary to take some tough economic decisions and to ensure also that what I described above could not happen again When Maggie took power we had not long handed out the begging bowl to the IMF in the same way Sudan or Somalia would, we were a banana republic, the sick man of Europe yet when Maggie left power we were the FOURTH strongest economy in the world and by far the strongest in Europe and just as importantly we could no longer be held to ransom by unions We will not see a better leader in my lifetime than Maggie
May 15, 200718 yr And Maggie did a lot for Wales Russ, yes mines were closed but do you think the likes of Sony and Microsoft and other companies that invested in factories in Wales in Maggie's era would have done it under Callaghan's banana republic ? your having a laugh mate if that is what you think, dozens of multinational companies invested in Wales because of Maggie creating a strong economy and giving them tax breaks to invest, yes some mines were closed but that was simply old economy dying away and being replaced by new economy, Sony and all the others that invested in South Wales did so because of Maggie
May 15, 200718 yr Maggie was great for the south of england, but awful socially for the rest of the country. Maggie left over 11 million people living in poverty in this country when she left office. Think in 1979 there were only 4 Million despite the bad economic situation. Plus health, education, and are public services were left to rot :puke2: Which has left us years behind most other western countries, while before she came to power are public services were the envy of the world. It is a myth that Maggie cut spending to the NHS she increased it above inflation every single year while at the same time getting private companies to run non surgical services like catering and so on, Maggie never cut spending on the NHS even once When she dies I hope she is given a full state funeral with military guards of honour through the streets of London like Diana got and I for one will certainly be lining the streets paying my respects Edited May 15, 200718 yr by Vic Vega
May 15, 200718 yr I for one will certainly be lining the streets paying my respects and ill be on the streets celebrating! 'ding dong the witch is dead'.... im older then you craig and i remember the 70's well... the rot started when HEATH took over premiership. dont all blame callaghan on the (overly) powerful unions, the winter of discontent would have happend anyway. i do admit that in 79 we needed a leader to CURB union activities, the unions were far too strong and holding the country to ransome at every oportunity just wasnt on. maggie ran down ALL public utilities and state owned companies... she deliberately under invested to make them 'uneconomical'... so the railways, water, nhs and schools etc were privatised.. what happend then?... they all went downhill with no investment in education, schools were run down slum schools with leaking roofs and perminant 'temporary' buildings. the nhs... why wasnt 'hospital superbugs' heard of prior to thatcher?.. because the state run cleaners cleaned the bloody hospitals properly! she shut hospitals, sold the railways to a bunch of cowboys who failed to maintain the system properly (well how could you when you havnt the money?). water companies?... same... under invested, sold them off cheaply, then the new private industrys HAD to put the prices up way above what they were in order to fix the worn out system. never see a better pm then thatcher?... we already have! the tories supposed to look after our money better then labour... but thatcher failed by a mile! the blair /brown years saw more stable economy, the lowest mortgages for 40 years and a sustainable growth... thatchers lot simply did not come close.,
May 15, 200718 yr Can I just say I find some of the comments in here about Margaret Thatcher's death absolutely sick and completely unnecessary for people to express their views. why? i detest her... she murdered hundereds over that fake war in the falklands, sooner shes in the ground the better.
May 15, 200718 yr why? i detest her... she murdered hundereds over that fake war in the falklands, sooner shes in the ground the better. What fake war!? Part of the UK was under attack and so she went to defend it. Now call me stupid but I thought that's what the armed forces were meant to do - protect the British people - not just sit back and watch as they were invaded. And I find it vile that any civilised human could wish such disgusting things on someone.
May 15, 200718 yr oh, OK, then, if you insist.... in which case would you mind educating me as to how the Falklands was a fake war?

Now call me stupid but I thought that's what the armed forces were meant to do - protect the British people - not just sit back and watch as they were invaded. And I find it vile that any civilised human could wish such disgusting things on someone. i find it vile that we populate an isolated rock off the argentine coast and call it 'ours' i find it vile that instead of diplomacy herr thatcher decided to let people pay with their lives... for what? wtf has it achieved? diplomacy would have been the civilised way... seeing as you are extoling the values of it... it was fake, in as much that it was totally unnecessary... the cost to us both financial and human just wasnt worth it. by the way, welcome to the forum, please bare in mind that you are mixing here with old buggers who actually LIVED through the thatcher years, and havnt picked up info from what they chose to teach in schools :)..... 17 eh?...
May 15, 200718 yr lol - Thanks for the welcome To be fair my teacher is a raving socialist so if anything I would expect my knowledge to be biassed the other way :P The reason I am completely in support of the decision to go to war over the Falklands however is that I dont believe you should say that just because it does not have a massive population and it is a long way away that you should not care about it. The Falklands ARE part of the United Kingdom and so should be protected from any invasion no matter where it is. If the people living there wanted to be part of Argentina I would feel differently but they most certainly didnt and so they have rights as British citizens to be protected.
