At the end of a decade that promised so much ended which precious little to rave about.

In a year when record producers employed featured vocalists & numerous samples it was difficult to say who the singer was on some hits of the year. A perfect example was the hit from Black Box - Ride on time which was no.1 for 6 weeks.

Worse trend of the year was Jive Bunny with 3 no.1’s; they sampled classic rock n roll tracks.

Stock Aitken and Waterman were responsible for 7 no.1’s this year.

The relative dearth of original material and star artists was a disturbing feature of the year.

Hits this year included:

Aerosmith - Love in an elevator

Marc Almond/Gene Pitney - Something’s gotten hold of my heart

Bangles - Eternal flame

Belinda Carlisle - Leave a light on

Cher - If I could turn back time

Phil Collins - Another day in paradise

Alice Cooper - Poison

Deacon Blue - Wages Day, Fergus sings the blues

Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus

Fine young cannibals - She drives me crazy

Guns & Roses - Sweet child o’ mine

Debbie Harry - I want that man

Cindi Lauper - I drove all night

Living in a box - Room in your heart

Madonna - Like a prayer

Morrissey - Last of the famous international playboys

Roy Orbison - You got it

Pet Shop Boys - It’s alright

Queen - I want it all, Invisible man

Simply Red - A new flame

Simple Minds - Belfast Child

Tears for fears - Sowing the seeds of love

Tranvision Vamp - Baby I don’t care

Tina Turner - The best

U2 - all I want is you

New artists this year:

Beautiful south - Song for whoever, You keep it all in

Happy Mondays - Madchester Rave on

La’s - There she goes

Roxette - The look

Shakespeare Sister - You’re history

Soul 11 Soul - Back to life

Lisa Stansfield - This is the right time

Technotronic - Pump up the jam

Texas - I don’t want a lover

tbh i dont think theres anything id add to my collection from that year.... 'poison', 'she drives me crazy', 'lambada', maybe a few others where ok... but 89 was a dire year for music imho.

The Happy Mondays started in 1985 not 1989.

For pop, yes, it was a pretty awful year but for indie and dance it was really, really good.

Depeche Mode's classic Personal Jesus and Tears for Fears Sowing the Seeds of Love were my personal highlights from that list.

Loved The La's and the Morrissey singles listed, too.

yikes... forgot that Kate Bush's opus The Sensual World came out in 1989.

The title track and the classic This Woman's Work - two of the singles of the year - the latter being, I think, one of the greatest records ever made.

well tbh, i wasnt much into music then, i was married and doing the whole hubby thing. i wasnt a fan of the indie of the late 80's, nor the goth or any dance, and i thought the charts were dire with nothing being of any appeal . i spent most of 89 listening to mike reads 60's show plus catching up on forgotten 60's tracks.

It's a great song imo, i have fond memories of it. Plus I speak the language so it's all good. Did really good in America and Australia too.
i liked it... it was one of the most original pop tracks to hit the chart that year..

YIKES ROB!

You really WERE doing that slippers'n'pipe married thing in '89, weren't you? :w00t: :o

hmmmm...1989

Pop charts full of SAW rubbish as I recall. Grunge just getting going. Awesome albums from Mudhoney and Soundgarden. Sonic Temple from The Cult. GnR finally hitting it big. Madchester starting to rumble resulting in one of the best TOTPs of all time. Kate releasing The Sensual World and melting my heart again. The Sundays, The Las and the Weddoes. Susanna Hoffs gorgeous on a beach. Monkey Gone to Heaven. The Stone Roses I Wanna Be Adored...

re: the lambada

i like folk music, i like world music, i like pop music, i think lambada is a gentle mix of all and is a pleasant enough track... perhaps my guilty (worst kept) secret from 89! lol

yes russ, i was slipping quite away into boring domesticity, however in '90 boredom got the better of me and i had an affair that ended the marriage and kick started my life big time, thank fcuk... :)

hehe Rob... you bad lad, you.

Still, you seem happy enough now, so you obviously did the right thing

tbh m8, it was the making of me..... many in my generation went from living with mum, to living with a wife who was like a mum but you screwed! if you get me.... i was brought up when women were housewives and men worked, i followed suit somewhat and was very un-domesticated.

so i ran off with the girl next door! lol.. that made me take control of my life and made me responsable for all my own decisions, especially when that relationship ended.

yep... ive never been happier or more content, trouble is... things can only go downhill from here! lol.

hmmmm...1989

Pop charts full of SAW rubbish as I recall.

hope in 20 years people will log onto message boards and say:

hmmmm...2007

Pop charts full of Timbaland rubbish as I recall.

its all production line, thats the nature of pop innit, however think in 2007 its a novelty if the hits didnt play nelly, timberlake and all the other production line american r&b bordoms and played something like divine instead
