Posted May 15, 200718 yr Newcastle have appointed former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce as their new manager on a three-year contract. The 52-year-old will be unveiled as Glenn Roeder's successor at a press conference at 1300 BST. He flew in by helicopter on Tuesday morning after attending the League Managers' Association dinner in Nottingham on Monday. He visited the training ground where he met those players who have not already started their summer break. Allardyce arrived at St James' Park and signed autographs for fans outside the ground ahead of the announcement. Newcastle confirmed the appointment to the stock market. Allardyce resigned as Bolton boss on 29 April and, after Glenn Roeder left the Magpies on 6 May, became the favourite for the post at St James' Park. The former Blackpool and Notts County boss, who rejected the chance to manage Newcastle just under three years ago, was interviewed for the position of England boss last summer. But was beaten to the role by the then Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren. He had been linked to Manchester City, who have a managerial vacancy after Stuart Pearce was sacked on Monday but has opted to try and turnaround Newcastle's fortunes. Allardyce cited his desire to win silverware as his reason for his departure from Bolton. He leaves behind a Bolton side who claimed a Uefa Cup place for Newcastle, who finished 13 points behind them in 13th place in the Premiership. The Magpies have not won a major domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup.
May 15, 200718 yr Gd luck, if he can get rid of the dead wood at newcastle then i think he can do a good job

May 15, 200718 yr is that made of plastic? wouldn't surprise me  now that IS a mickey mouse plate
May 15, 200718 yr No great suprise that he's the new manager. I think this will be the beginning of a new era at Newcastle though, but I think it will be a couple of seasons, at least, until they win something under Allardyce...
May 15, 200718 yr If he can take a Bolton team half full of ageing has-beens to the top 8 each season with hardly any money he should easily bring success to Newcastle. If a team is going to break the top 4 in the next two seasons it'll be them or Spurs.

I think the Newcastle squad needs a complete sort out to get rid of all the dead wood a la Dyer etc, and I think that's gonna take a while. I think they'll be a real force to contend with in a couple of seasns though, depending on how wisely, Allardyce spends his money though.
May 15, 200718 yr I wonder how long it will take for Michael Owen to ask for a transfer now.......
May 15, 200718 yr I wonder how long it will take for Michael Owen to ask for a transfer now....... It's not as if he's actually done ANYTHING to warrant his wage. :manson: Shame about Allardyce, I wanted SVEN. :teresa:

It's the defence that needs sorting. They're going to get nowhere whilst Bramble, Carr and Babayaro are all some of their best.

Dyer's good on his day, but I dread to imagine what his wage is... For what Newcastle are paying him, he hasn't given them much in return on the field, so I think they'd be better off without him. Allardyce needs to work on their defence first, and he really needs to get rid of Bramble especially. I think Nolan will be going to the Toon in the summer, who I think would be a great buy for Newcastle.
May 16, 200718 yr Well he's already released Bramble, Moore, Onyewu, Srnicek and Bernard. So already a good start.
May 16, 200718 yr What's this talk of Dyer? :o I think they need to KEEP him, of course there's all the injury worries about him but he seemed to shake them off for a lot of last season ^_^
