Established at the outset of the punk rock boom, Stiff Records often featured a provocative, rebellious stance. Stiff had billed themselves as "The World's Most Flexible Record Label". Other slogans were "We came. We saw. We left." :D

For a small independent label, they had quite a lot of good artists on their books.

The Adverts

Elvis Costello

Devo

The Damned

Ian Dury and the Blockheads

Dave Edmunds

Furniture

Richard Hell and The Voidoids

Jona Lewie

Lene Lovich

Nick Lowe, also Stiff's "in house" record producer

Madness

Kirsty MacColl

Graham Parker and The Rumour

Plasmatics

The Pogues

Tenpole Tudor

Tracey Ullman

Wreckless Eric

Yello

Any other independent labels that had a good artist listing?

Rough Trade, Factory, Creation and, possibly, Domino can rival Stiff, but yeah...what an important label.

Stiff was fabulous.

Lene Lovich was always my fave act of theirs... but MacColl, Dury and the wonderful Furniture - all amazing stuff.

Remember the gorgeous 'Brilliant Mind' by Furniture? What a track....

Ooh yes, 'Brilliant Mind' was genius - shame they never managed to follow it up.
a pop quiz killer that...lol. not many remember 'furniture'.. good track.

I do. I bought it on 7 inch vinyl.

Anyway, any excuse to post the classic UK #83 hit on the Stiff record label......

Kirsty MacColl - Terry (1984)

think this list needs updating on wikipedia with Alvin Stardust and Pete Waterman (another in house Stiff producer   )

was funny that thing with Tracey Ullman's mixes being slowed down by Pete Waterman when he took it to Dave Robinson for final approval as Dave alway thought they should be speeded up for radio play

did Pete Waterman produce many others at Stiff???

well unless they werealso watching the rpt on BBC Four the other night of the Stiff story

they did but i think record company politics with BMG killed it. Jim Irvin wrote a piece about it in somthing like The Guardian, Mojo or Uncut (he writes for these monthlys/papers now) not so long ago. intersting article.

Ralph???? actually i think i would put yello as more of a ralph act rather than stiff one and it was good that they were kept out of the show as they are not really part of that stiff vibe that the show was showing with those tours feat Rachel Sweet, Wreckless Eric etc and the madness stuff.

so does Union Square own the rights to the stiff logo and branding? they were credited as having the back cat on the bbc four show but wondering what the set up was with the enemy? did warner just licence the brand from them?

Yes, it was a great song and should have been a huge hit. Sadly, Furniture are on the long list of under-performing bands.

well only if that list is sub-headed as "fucked by ZTT, fucked by Arista"
