On BBC 4 tonight is a documentery about Smallfilms and the creations of Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin (the clangers, Ivor the engine etc etc)

so what were your opinions about these two and the things they created. Smallfilms are v important in the history of British Animation but i suppose could be an aquired taste compared to people like Chuck Jones and Tex Avery and American firms like Disney, H-B / Warner Bros, DePatie-Freleng  and i suppose even earlier things like the Terytoons stuff???

Well, a completely different thing really. Postgate / Firmin productions were either stop-motion or static drawings with a moving camera. Yes, they look dated by today's standards, but their unique charm has never been so clear when watching and listening back. Funny that you haven't mentioned Bagpuss - probably the best-loved series produced by the pair.

That said, I just watched the Clangers on BBC4 and those whistles are more annoying than I ever remembered.

I remember Blue Peter showing how to make a Clanger out of a sock. As we only had a B&W telly at the time, I naturally assumed that Clangers were grey - like socks. So, it came as a huge shock when I first saw them in colour and realised they were pink.

i thought the clangers were literally postgates 'clanger'.. i didnt like them.

but

i love postgates creations... noggin the nog, bagpus, pogles etc...
