OMG!!! Shocking news that the new Editors album might be a bit average with its 2 star review in Q!!!

However which bands have fallen victim to the curse of the sophomore slump, who had brilliant debuts but followed them up with shoddy seconds?

Well going by recent reviews I would not trust Q magazine. They used to be pretty reliably up until the late 1990s but have gone shockingly down hill since then which is why the magazine is in decline & in jeopardy.

and probs why they have brought back the free cds!!! :cheer:

i can name a few bands that dont suffer with their 2nd lp...

arctic monkeys - favourite worst nightmare

the strokes - room on fire

franz ferdinand - you could have it so much better with

the libertines - the libertines

the cribs - the new fellas

interpol - antics

but i cant say the same about bloc party , kaiser chiefs , razorlight

Their two ***** albums this year have been pretty accurate though...

The most notorious case of "Sophomore Slump" has to be Stone Roses "Second Coming"... Their debut was absolutely glorious, capturing the mood and times of the early 90s perfectly, it was always gonna be difficult to follow... The warning signs for "The Second Coming" came pretty early on, the fact that it seemed to take so bloody long to do it, the fact that they were beginning to fracture.. Then when it did eventually come out, oh dear..... It just sounded so lame and tired, like some second-rate Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones cover band..... Then, when their human drum-machine Reni left/got fired, that was the blow from which they never recovered, their headline slot at Reading in '96 was a total disaster...... A tragedy....

Elastica!

Actually the 'sophomore slump' will be much more prevalent now as bands tend to be hyped to unimaginable heights before they've even released their debut nowadays. What used to be the 'difficult third LP' is now the 'almost impossible second LP'.

Also, not sure why you say Bloc Party have suffered, because their second LP is better than their first and sold pretty well.

well the lead single may have got to number one but so did No Limits by 2 Unlimited and when the best you can do for a chorus is the word Ruby rpt a number of time i would say they were coming close into dadrock version of that act.

Obv when the second track is an average piece of radioplay called EVERYTHING IS AVERAGE NOWADAYS you know the album might only be worth about £3 in greatness

Elastica!

tbh mate, I never rated Elastica much in the first place, their debut was rather uninspiring IMO, certainly nowhere even close to the league of "The Stone Roses" in terms of music.... I always got the feeling that they were big only because of the Justine and Damon from Blur angle....

And did Elastica even release a proper second album anyway....? I remember an extended EP/mini album, but nothing after that....

That's only your opinion though - plenty of people, me for one, think that 'Yours Truly Angry Mob' is MUCH better than 'Employment'. I love the last 2 singles admittedly, but there are at least 3 better songs on that album IMO, not as commercial and they probably wouldn't be big hits, but they are brilliant songs.

I agree that this is happening to bands because of hype, rather than quality of music. I'm also really excited about the new Editors album, even if Q gave it no stars I'd still get it!!!!

I'm still a bit disappointed with Editors' new single. I'd prefer to hear more of the album before buying it. The Back Room was a really good album so I hope the new one is up to the same standard.

about Elastica

their second album "the menace" is reallly great but not a successful one if w r talkin about sales.

i believe that "the menace" is better than (almost) any other release in the 00s by a btit band.

maybe you should give them achance hearin it.

btw, their first lp is a brit classic.

just ask the old men ;)

I'm an "old man", I listened to the first Elastica album.... Found it incredibly dull tbh.... There were far more exciting things happening around then anyway - Underworld, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, etc....

^i m an old man but i definitely prefer the new arctic monkeys album than Kaisers...

^^yeah the these albums are really great like the elastica album...different styles of music n classic albums from a great era for music
