Got mine this morning :cheer: So what do we all think of it?

1. The View From The Afternoon - Wasn't one of my BIG favourites from the album but was a good choice as a lead track and of course is no different to the album version.

2. Cigarette Smoker Fiona - They have changed the lyrics from the demo which was just called 'Cigarette Smoker', it's better than the demo but I wouldn't say it's particularly one of their best so far but it would probably be the only one that would really fit on the album.

3. Dispair In The Departure Lounge - Well after the album only really had Riot Van as far as slow songs went here is another one! (though of course Mardy Bum may be a slower song too!) Very different to what we expect from the Arctic Monkeys but I like it, after not being the biggest fan of the album version of Riot Van this certainly shows that they can do slower songs as well just as good!

4. No Buses - ANOTHER slower one now! and it pisses all over DITDL imo, not much I can say about this one apart from the fact that it's pure brilliance and it's the side that I've wanted to see from the Arctics ever since I first found the demos from the net. Immediately when Alex starts with the lyrics 'Lady, where's your love gone? I've been looking but I can't find it anywhere' I was drawn into listening to what he was talking about which I don't intentionally do on many songs myself. (usually just pick it up after a few listens lol)

5. Who The F*ck Are Arctic Monkeys? - The title track and the one that I was most interested to hear after all that time of managing to resist the urge to download the EP before I got it. The irony about their current status and the predictions of the future are clearly shown in the lyrics which is the impression the title of the song gave to me. Of course the lyric from this song that has cleverly got the attention of the public is "Bring on the backlash!" This song was the highlight of the EP for me as I thought that it shows what the Arctics are about their great lyrics that will have you talking for hours on end about them.

Overall this EP is a good progression from the album and it shows that the Arctics will certainly be around for a long time as they can progress from each record as well as coming up with some crackers that'll make them known for their current stuff rather than make album after album which gets worse and worse and have the loyal fans buying the name and not the album! *coughOASIScough* :P

btw I may change some of this as I only first listened to it 2 hours ago but I wanted to put my thoughts on here now.

hmmmm... Not everyone is liking it :o Quite a mixed reaction... Here is Drowned In Sound's review.

Let's get something straight. First and foremost, 'A View from the Afternoon' is quite easily, one of the finest singles of the year. Brash, in-yer-face and an air drummer's dream. Despite the intro aping Supergrass' 'Richard IIIrd', it's forgiven by way of having the single best pop hook of the year. I'd defy anyone not to be roped in when Alex Turner sings, "and you won't be surprised," as if his whole life and career depends upon it. To be perfectly honest, after somewhere between 40-50 repeated listens, I can safely state that 'The View from the Afternoon' is a near-perfect nugget of musical glory and if the band had chosen to release it as a straight-up single, they'd have been forcing me to push a 9 or a 10 into the bottom of this review.

Things can never be that simple with the Arctic Monkeys though.

The four tracks that follow vary from the boring to the dire, scraping the barrel of their Northern pomp and committing 15 minutes to tape that most other bands would have binned as soon as they saw the reaction on the faces of their label.

'Cigarette Smoker Fiona' is a limp, lifeless second edition of the opening track, replete with lacklustre lyricism and a half-assed guitar widdle throughout proceedings. Worryingly though, it does get worse.

The introverted nature of 'Despair in the Departure Lounge' and 'No Buses' leaves me feeling cold and shut out, like someone (or of course, the nation as a collective hype machine) has ripped the soul out of this band and left them unable to hit home like they could all of... six months ago.

This isn't the 'start of the backlash', but it is cause for concern. The reluctantly-monikered 'band of the people' will have their crown stolen sooner than all could have imagined if their output remains this unimaginative. I'm choosing to ignore the closing title track, simply because this kind of self-referential post-modernism would make me disregard the entire output of the band if I took it seriously.

Just go and listen to 'A View from the Afternoon' on repeat.

I disagree with it however myself, tbh I don't get why TVFTA is SO popular compared to the other songs on the album.

Yeah there are mixed reviews of it on the forum.

I think its probably because people were expecting it to be as up-beat as the album was where only one song out of the 13 was slow where 2/5 of these are slow, but No Buses is the only track i've heard so far and its really grown on me over the past few weeks.

2. Cigarette Smoker - They have changed the lyrics from the demo which was just called 'Cigarette Smoker'

The new version is called 'Cigarette Smoker Fiona'. :)

The new version is called 'Cigarette Smoker Fiona'. :)

Well that was what it was obviously meant to say ;)

Cigarette Smoker Fiona, is the best track on the EP

It may grow on me but it doesn't really match the quality of the some of their other songs :( As I said though it'd fit on the album, I would replace Vampires with it myself.

Actually, I've changed my mind... it's not just brilliant, it's the best thing they've ever recorded.

Job done.

No Buses is absolute brilliant i've got to agree there, and i've only heard it about 5 times, because the postie still ain't brought it. If it ain't at my house tomorrow i'm gonna have to go with the conlusion that the postie has swiped it.

Yep! It's that good that your postman would nick yours to get a copy :P
oh well it seems my theory wasn't true as it arrived today. I've listened to it once and No Buses is easily the best track. The other 3 new tracks as good minus Despair In The Depatrure Lounge which and the moment I really don't like.

Glad you like it Josh! :cheer: I still think WTFAAM is the best one however myself ^_^
I've only heard WTFAAM, twice and No Buses grew on me loads so I think that will, and i'm hoping that Despair In The Departure Lounge will as well.
