Fantastic stuff, many thanks munchkin. I'm thinking of perhaps taking some singing lessons. :) But don't worry, I shall not audition for next year's X-Factor. I'm reading Ben Elton's Chart Throb at the moment, and it's put me right off any of these kind of talent shows.

Sorry to Leona fans for going way off topic.

Yes - I apologise too.

So could she sing that aria of the Queen of the Night from Mozart's Magic Flute that goes up to F6? It's actually quite rare that a woman can sing that high and it requires a lot of practice. In the XFactor I don't think Leona sang anything higher than A5.

C4 wouldn't be head voice, that's the lower part of the soprano range.

What's a "whistle range"?

In head voice she did D6 on on "Bridge over troubled water" and E6 on "Could it be magic" and "Lady Marmalade".

You can hear a G6 on her "Loving you" cover on youtube, these are whistle notes. Mariah can go into high seventh octave with whistle notes, but it can damage the vocal chords so not wise to do so, that's why she has lost all her middle range.

Leona also hits a G#5 in full voice on "I have nothing" and I think on "Sorry seems the hardest word".

She can do C4 in head voice, you don't actually realise it because she can mix both voices at once. Check out the first few notes of "I will always love you" but she does it all over the place in several songs.

Katherine Jenkins can do 3 octaves in head voice.

Is that the one Ben Elton and Simon was laughing about on "this is your life"?

Simon bought a whole batch and sent them to all his friends.

i hope she does more RnB and not all slow songs if she does slow songs she will flop! x

Too much RnB = UK FLOP (after initial sales) RnB AND Big Ballads = UK HIT .. i want some big diva ballads ^_^
Thanks for the tip, munchkin. I've been googling and wikipedia-ing about this. Having much fun as I'm interested in singing in general.

About the whistle register: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistle_register

Found this interesting article on Wiki re: the woman with biggest vocal range, which stretches over... wait for it... 8 octaves!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Brown...ilian_singer%29

Read somewhere a while agon that Mariah Carey can apparently sing over 6 octaves, and I found that hard to believe, but having read about Georgia Brown, I suppose it must be true!

I think the average range for a woman is probably more like 3 octaves.

I wonder how big Leona's range is. Probably bigger than average, especially since she's had training.

Every person is born with 12 1/2 notes (less than 2 octaves). Most singers have 2 octaves, great singers have 2.5 octaves, anything over 3 is pretty amazing.

Leona's range is pretty much identical to Christina Aquilara's, 1 note short of 4 octaves. Except Leona has that extended head voice due to her classical training.

Mariah's has 5 octaves but 1 of those octaves is whistle register and there are no songs that demand any notes in this range so its pretty useless other than to show off.

Heres some more info

What do you think, when it's finally released, the chart position will be?

I think perhaps top 5, having trouble thinking it could reach number 1

Great article from the new issue of VIBE magazine (A large American publication).

Thor, thanks for that list of singers with their ranges. Very interesting. :) I think my own range is something like E3-G5, with practice. Would love to work on that.

Can't see the article that you posted in your last post, as my computer at work blocks photobucket. :( Will check it out in the internet cafe tonight or tomorrow, though.

I will definitely have a listen to Leona when her new song is released, as I think she has a beautiful voice, although I prefer it when she keeps her singing simpler than she often did on X-Factor.

Me too Toni.Someone put some links up to a couple of tracks she did pre-XFactor and she sounded great. Can't be having with all that twiddling and screeching a la Mariah - not pleasant to listen to.

Simon Cowell has just said on Radio 2's Steve Wright in the afternoon that Leona has just been in the recording studio in London with two acts who have had UK#1 hits this year....

Could it be these two....?????

We've listened to this on the radio 2 website and did not hear him say this. Are you sure?

I just listened online to Simon Cowells interview on Radio 2 and didn't hear him say that either

Apparently she's releasing her new single ''Bleeding Love'' on the same date as Spice Girls comeback single
