Posted June 15, 200718 yr celebrity culture is being blamed for the rise in drinking and sexual promiscuity in british teenagers. is this right?... do todays teens try to emulate 'celebs'?
June 15, 200718 yr Author its not so much about looking like a celeb as acting like one... drinking, drugs and sex..
June 15, 200718 yr I don't think the issue is any bigger than 10 or 20 years ago just that it is more widely reported and tabloids like to jump on the bandwagon
June 15, 200718 yr Exactly. And teens in the 80s were worse! Rebels who smoked bongs all day and dressed like punks :P
June 15, 200718 yr Exactly. And teens in the 80s were worse! Rebels who smoked bongs all day and dressed like punks :P Yeah thats what I mean lol, when I was a teen I saw enough drugs consumed to add an extra 1% to Columbia's annual GDP but there was never any publicity now the media are obsessed with it and people believe the situation is worse when it isnt :)
June 15, 200718 yr i dont think its just celebs that influence teens. Everyone is influenced by some people..
June 15, 200718 yr Author craig is right... theres always been drink and drugs and sex in the 'celeb' culture and thats where it stopped. i dont think the blame for todays sexually promiscuous teens, banged up on drugs n drink is the celebrity culture.... i think its a steady slackening of moral values.
June 15, 200718 yr i think its a steady slackening of moral values. I agree. I dread to think what it'll be like in about 10 years time.
June 15, 200718 yr Author mind you... although ive said i dont think celeb culture is to blame, i do think music videos are too sexually explicit, so i think that music vids have contributed to the rise in sexual promiscuity..... and i dont think thats a good thing. for ten years or so females have been portrayed scantily dressed, the spice girls appealed to pre-teen girls who tried to emulate their dress and moves.. so although i dont blame celebrity culture, i do blame music vids.
June 15, 200718 yr Everyone trys dugs at some time even if it's just weed, same goes for booze. Tenagers pick up the habbit off friends, who see their parents do it, it's all down to bad parenting at the end of the day!
June 15, 200718 yr Exactly. It's no worse than it has ever been...and it's never been bad. Have fun in your teens - just be careful. News stories like this are just to keep interest in f***wits like Paris Hilton etc. who ONLY have the tabloids to feed their fame and enjoy a fruitful relationship where each are kept nicely in funds. They can only do this by giving them stories about how wild they are. But these stories sell papers...News of the World sell far more copies when they've got a 'celeb behaving badly' on the front page. All they're trying to do is increase the reach of their biggest selling stories to 'real' stories e.g. the younger generation who apparently are far worse than we ever were.
June 15, 200718 yr Author statistics would beg to differ richie,.. teenage/underage pregnancy and std's are at an all time high and are the worst in europe. i think there is more drug taking now and certainly more drinking then there was when i was a teen...... all them years ago... lol
June 15, 200718 yr I do blame the whole "Celeb Culture" for a quite a lot of it tbh - it's engendered an attitude of "I want it all, I want it now, and I dont want to bother my arse actually working for it...", if you look at the celebs from the past, particularly Pop Stars - the likes of Lennon, McCartney, Morrissey, Bono and others too numerous to mention, they all overcame adverity and worked incredibly hard to achieve their status, in short, they all paid their dues... People look at Paris Hilton and think all they have to do to achieve fame is go out partying all night and get drunk, do a DIY Porn video or go on a "Reality TV" show and be an attention-seeking freak... I liked what Clint Eastwood said - "It seems all it takes to be a Star these days is to be an heiress". Obviously Teens have always got drunk, experimented with drugs and sex (I know I did), but drugs for me were about expanding my state of consciousness and it was always with a group of friends around, NEVER about "escaping reality"... I think that a lot of drug taking amongst teens these days is being done for all the wrong reasons....
June 16, 200718 yr Author oh i blame celeb culture for the attitude of tawdryness and 'now', 'looks good = is good', all show and no substance, get there the easy way.. i think its awful, giving hope to nonentities that it they act the part.. they are 'in'. but i dont blame it for the increase in drug/drink/sex (celebs from the past had always done that and it had little effect on us). music vids have certainly done more for that.

Celebs have always done drugs and what have you sure, but I dont really recall it getting quite so much exposure or glamourized half as much as "Cocaine Kate" and "Potty Pete" do.... Sure, there was "Rave Culture", ecstacy and everything, but the Press were always totally dead against that, anyone so much as suggesting that drugs could be positive were slaughtered in the press (remember the sh!t that Noel Gallagher got into for making the perfectly correct comment that to some people taking drugs was a normal, everyday activity?)... The likes of Kate Moss seem to get somehow rewarded for their actions by the media. THIS is the problem as I see it....
June 16, 200718 yr maybe.... but surely cocaine isnt the drug used by chavvy kids... Erm, you'd be surprised actually..... Cocaine is quite easy to come by....
