Pitchfork's recent good review of Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" [scoring it 7.5] made me realise how snobby Pitchfork often can be. They rarely give good scores to "mainstream" music and only give good reviews [in most cases] to obscure indie acts.

They also have a tendancy to go against the majority of views in other reviews and give a bad review to a well recieved album ["Volta"'s very critical and poor review recently highlighted this]

So where do you stand with Pitchfork? A fan or snobs land?

MASSIVE FAN

In relation to following up acts with good ratings I usually pretty much like EVERYTHING recommended.

7.5? That's a good review!

A great site. =D They're not even close to being harsh, and keep in mind that a different person reviews each album and song. Meaning that the opinion of one person does not mean it's the opinion of the entire site.

I'd also like to point out that 'My Love' by Justin Timberlake was given the honor of 'best song of 2006'. I'd hardly call JT an obscure indie act.

The White Stripes' Icky Thump got an 8/10, too. They're mainstream, too.

or turn onto teletext most weeks. yeah 7.5 is a v good score for such a mainstream act like Rihanna (R&B has taken over from HiNRG disco and rock as the de facto non AC pop style of the late 2000s) and having Umbrella annnoy me and having heard the next single one i would say is overrated (no wonder New Order have split up  ).

Oh dear, Hooky and Sumner must be spinning in their retirement hammocks...

Although, it's clearly a mile better than Umbrella...would sound much better as an instrumental, therefore Rihanna is redundant.

Pitchfork are catching up with the daddy that is ALL MUSIC Guide. Personally I regard them with greater respect than Rolling Stone, Q Magazine & NME now.

and compared to the Culture Box's recommended reads of relix, paste, uncut, mojo and the word*

*recommended in the sense that these are the mag section that culture box's covered genres are aligned with
