As has been stated aleady, the list apeared in The Word. I doubt that many Word readers are fans of many (or, indeed, any) of the singers in the list. The list will been compiled with the magazine's readership (predominantly 30- and 40-somethings) in mind. A magazine with a mostly teenage readership will have come up with a completely different list. These lists are mostly for fun and to provoke discussion. Why not just see it in that light?

I apologise but if anyone considers the vocal abilities of Madonna or Jennifer Lopez better than Mariah Carey they need their head examined.
I voted Madonna. :w00t: She's not even THAT good. -_-
Hilary Duff's voice is fine :huh: Shes not especially talented but she can sing in tune.

I find it utterly ridiculous that her name is even being mentioned in this thread about the 'worst singer of all time'!

Don't get me wrong, I like her and all but she can't sing very well live from what I've seen :(

Oh dear. You sound like my mother with her theories.

The Word is obviously complete sh!t if it believes that these are the worst singers, and as I said, this thread should be closed because people are answering the question as though it was 'Whose singing style/musical genre cant you stand?'.

Why should it be closed down...? I dont see just how this thread has actually broken any of BJ's rules... You just dont like it because it slags off all your little idols... Don't be so precious mate.... I KNOW damn fine what question it is I am answering, dont presume to think that I am ignorant of the question's meanings and sub-meanings, and I think it's a legit question, which is why I gave it my full answer... Mariah Carey IS the worst singer because of what her "style" has created, ie thousands of little wannabes incapable of actually just singing a song as a song and instead batter it beyond all recognition with ridiculous histrionics and showing off how many octaves they can bludgeon..... I like my steak to be well cooked, but not turned into fukkin' inedible charcoal, know what I mean..... Compare Mariah Carey or Slagulera to a TRUE Soul Sista like Aretha Franklin or Lauren Hill, or, yeah, why not...... the Great Shirley Bassey, a REAL Diva....... No fukkin' contest IMO..... Impressive voices which soar, BUT still manage to actually remember they're SINGING A RUDDY SONG!!!!!!

She's not a "soul sista", but that description is pretty much why I rank Lucie as my top female singer ... to me she's pure talent, writes amazing songs, is completely under-rated and has a phenominal voice. I enjoy Mariah's work, but technically brilliant as she may (or, as opinion dictates, may NOT) be, she doesn't come close for me.

I dont doubt Mariah's actual technical abilities, I just don't like the way she uses her voice at all..... I mentioned the whole "soul" thing because when the likes of Mariah and Whitney came along they were described as being "soulful"..... Nonsense.... Soul Music is nothing to do with technical ability, soulfulness comes from within, nothing to do with showing off or ridiculous histrionics, or acting like a Diva; it touches your soul, Mariah is nothing but show-offness and technique, Aretha and Lauryn actually made you feel something within yourself.... Mariah has never touched my soul... Merely gotten on my nerves.....

You clearly didnt catch her Que Hiciste performance on Idol :o

That indeed prove she was an amazing singer!

I dont get people when they say Mariah doesnt show Emotion in songs :mellow:

I think she shows emotion perfectly. Yeah maybe not recently but around 1990-1999 i think she did it very well.

No way is she a BAD singer.

i suppose thats why it is branded as r&b :lol: no soul only dollar$ (ker-ching and ker-ching again)

What people seem to have gotten confused here is that there are multi-facets to what makes someone a singer. It isn't all about vocal ability, rather the way in which they use the voice, express emotion and tell a story within a song, "connecting to the song".

The best singers vocally can be the worst singers overall because they fail to connect to the song and this IS something I think Mariah is guilty of, yep she can hold a note but God, she doesn't seem the slightest bit interested in what she's singing, that's something Ms Winehouse is guilty of in my opinion too.

Here's the article too if anyone wants a read to see the context within which her "accolade" was awarded;;

And who they rated the "20 best singers";;

Well done for posting this Jake, now perhaps all the people who criticised this will actually manage to read it (despite the tiny print...LOL) and see that it wasn't actually about who was "good or bad" in terms of the actual ability, but in terms of what actually came out of it.....

Spot on Rob, I think I would certainly elect to listen to a J-Lo song before I would even consider listening to a Mariah one..... :lol:

Amen to that B)

Lol she showed emotion perfectly in We Belong Together, and that was pretty recent!

I think the way the medie love to hate Mariah is a perfect example of jealousy. When there's nothing to pick on they find fault in the things she does well. Like singing. :D

i have to agrre with yo i like madonna & j.lo but they cant

touch mariah vocally and never will.

I totally agree with you on this, because she was reverting back to her early 1990s vocal stylings of Vision Of Love, Hero, I'll Be There, Without You, All I Want For Christmas, etc but Mariah has rightly been criticised because she has let her superb technique go to waste over-singing songs (the worst example has to be Against All Odds) or even worse on tracks that can barely be called tunes whilst wearing a ridiculously small amount of clothing .....
