April 27, 200619 yr The main (and HUGE) problem I have with the indie board here is that the posters there seem to be average age of 12. They think indie started and ended with Arctic Monkeys - a thread about Morrissey would just be totally ignored??? I posted a thread about the Godfather of Indie, John Peel - and to be honest, I don't think 90% of the posters on the indie thread had even HEARD of him... I think it got one response?!

I think I'd pretty much have to agree with that statement. They think that this 'Britpop' stuff that's masquerading as Indie is real Indie or Alternative.. Nothing of the sort....

I think you're right there, most people on the Indie boards consider Indie as only new stuff, but there is a lot of old stuff - I will update the rules in the rules thread about these sort of artists. :)

I think you must be looking at a COMPLETELY different forum  That Morrissey thread wasn't ignored as far as I saw and I certainly looked at it though as the man is a genius imo though I only made one response personally. Are you suprised that people are talking about what's right now then? I would say that the majority of people are there to disucss the newer stuff because that's what they're hearing right now so they want to talk about that like for example I made a thread on the new Boy Kill Boy single as I fell in love with that song and you'll also see that there are discussions on Snow Patrol and Keane's comebacks as that is happening right now too. ;) You have to remember that some people DON'T LIKE the older stuff as well. As for John Peel do you think everyone on here is death? I'm sure everyone is well aware of the impact he had on the music industry as I certainly do as it was through him that I first heard a hell of a lot of bands for the first time. (But I don't think I saw a John Peel thread so I'll have a look ath that in a sec ;) )I remember you thought that somehow people didn't know who Kate Bush was before 'Aerial' on CC  I don't see how anyone who at leasts listens to SOME music could avoid hearing her eighties stuff. Come to think of it I really should start a few threads about some older bands though as I said people are more inclined to talk about the new stuff as most people do register to talk about and find new out about new bands.
April 29, 200619 yr regardless of wikipedia's definition i still maintain that singer/songwriter is a specific genre itself and not everyone who writes then performs there own songs should be regarded singer/songwriter... examples beverley knight, darius, will young, mcfly, the arctic monkeys... all of these write there own songs but they are in no way singer/songwriters If someone records several songs that are solely credited to that person i.e written lyrics, top line melody and music and the songs are of a personal nature, is not that person a singer/songwriter no matter what genre the songs are? If that same someone records songs he has collaborated on with other songwriters/producers but he has first writing credit on every track of his album and tells the story behind each song in an accompanying documentary, does it make him any less a singer/songwriter? If that same someone records songs he has collaborated on with other songwriters/producers but he has first writing credit on every track of his album and tells the story behind each song in an accompanying documentary, does it make him any less a singer/songwriter? I agree with the first paragraph. But the second doesn't sit well with me. A singer-songwriter should be able to write entire songs without the help of collaborators. They also should not need a documentary to prove they write their songs. They should also be able to perform these songs without help. They can often play the guitar or piano. That's how I interpret the term.
