Hey :)

Well in my graphics project at school, I am making a Box set releasing Michael Jacksons past albums, and adding new stuff, such as unreleased material and special goodies.

Now this could be a form of a questionaaire, but you answer it however you want to :)

Say you buy a CD of an artist, your not a huge fan of, but want to buy it and lsiten to their music, if you get me..

What would make you buy that album, does it ahve to stand out, would you have had to see adverts, posters and such what? music videos?

Or anything else??

Would be great if yall could help :)

(PS Mods if this is in the wrong section feel free to move)

If I like the songs I've heard from the albums and if I've heard good reviews about it.

For example I hate Hilary Duff usually but I loved ''With Love'' and ''Stranger'' so I decided to buy her album and it was amazing :cheer:

i always illegally download the music first and then decide from there if i'll buy it or not. if i like, then i'll go and make a purchase. if i dislike, i'll just delete it.

the exceptions i make though, are for tlc, jamelia, alicia keys and vanessa carlton because they all make really good music and i know they wont let me down.

My friends, Myspace, Youtube, the radio, all play an influence on the type of music I want to go out and buy. I also really get into music through Idol shows. I then download them [Ares] -legal in canada- and from there if I really like the music I'll go on and buy the album(s). :]
If I've not bought an album by that artist before but like several singles, will then buy the album. Or if I love the first single I may listen to some more tracks on Youtube and buy iti f I'm impressed.

This is a great system which I also employ. It works though only if you're honest. Another good method is to use blogs where people have uploaded one or two tracks from an album as tasters or sites where you can stream a whole album.

Other considerations I make when buying an album are the label it is on. Some labels have a real mark of quality that you can nearly always trust e.g. Domino.

What makes you buy the singles?

A good video helps, a nice cover and the song has to be good :D Oh and a good B side e.i. a remix or a song thats not on the album

Albums by favourite artists and tried and trusted ones I would go out and buy regardless

Otherwise it is "try before you buy" via BitTorrent

I do that also :D

What determines whether or not I buy an album is if I like the cover.

Just kidding.

There are certain artists whom I'd buy an album as soon as it was released (the ones I'm a fan of), what can also determine for me is if I like the singles or what else I've heard of an album, or if I'm unsure I'll download about 5 of the tracks illegally to see if I'll like it.

Tbh the cover does help me decide  Only if for example I have a tenner and im torn between two albums - then the cover might be the deciding factor for me :P

But most of the time, it's the quality of the lead or first two singles. Generally I take the view that if only one of two singles has been good, its not worth buying, and I'll maybe go back later and get it if the 3rd one is decent.

Posters or display stands dont tend to influence my decision at all - i go in most of the time with a certain CD in mind.

If I like more then one single off of the album I will probably buy it!
favourites artists and if the singles are good B)
I usually have to like the first two singles LOADS before I consider buying it, unless it's a comeback album like Avril Lavigne or Maroon 5 and I buy it based on the stuff they released beforehand. The amount of adverts etc. really doesn't bother me or effect my decision.

so you have to hear the record first then read the review, so you dont read the critics re3views first and decide to investigate???

I bought her last album as it came with a dvd and so was better buying it then than waiting around for the £3 sale like anything that might be Manic Street Preachers associated.

but these days only a few artists get a decently promoed second single, just look at Bev Knight!!!
