Posted July 7, 200717 yr This has been in the news the last few days..apparently 'Girlfriend' is VERY similar to an old 70s track... make your own mind up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HFZkl1v0Kc
July 7, 200717 yr I wouldn't say VERY similar. The hook yeh but the rest of the song NOOOO. Doesn't matter really though I suppose.
July 8, 200717 yr Well, she ripped off this track and Toni Basil's "Hey Mickey", so she can expect a writ from Toni Basil's lawyers soon.....

July 9, 200717 yr It's not THAT similar..just one part.. That "one part" would be the actual HOOK of the song though mate, the most important part of ANY 'Pop Song' surely because it's the Hook that sells the bloody song.... One thing to be influenced, quite another to just come in and wholesale rip someone else off.... Definition of Plagiarism is - "Passing off someone else's work as your own", does not matter ONE JOT if the work being plagiarised is done by a multi-platinum selling artist or by someone who sells about a hundred records to their mates, if it's copyrighted, then it's protected by law, simple as... In fact, better to attempt it with someone who isn't well-known or who has been relatively forgotten or is dead, more chance of getting away with it... Remember the "Father Ted" "My Lovely Horse" episode...? In all seriousness though, if I were to write an essay for university and I just ripped off some obscure text that very little people knew about, I would be in deep sh!t, simple as..... Too many people are pre-occupied with the fact that the band here in question are not well known or have been forgotten, that is entirely irrelevant, they feel aggrieved and they have a pretty strong case actually.....
July 9, 200717 yr but would you REALLY want to drag Hey Mickey through the courts  To prove a point, yes....
July 10, 200717 yr I think this is just a forgotten band trying to seek some attention. Avril even wrote a big letter on her official site stating she had never even heard of that band before! Now there is more news that the band Peaches thinks 'I Don't Have To Try' is similar to one of their songs. When will this all end? People must think she is an easy target or something since she is at the height of her fame right now.
July 12, 200717 yr I've just heard the Peaches track and it's vaguely similar to Avril's track, even if that and I mean i've never heard of Peaches before and the beat to the track doesn't even really seem the same as Avril's at all, just another case of bandwagon jumping. If I was gonna say Avril ripped off a track for I Don't Have To Try it would have been Drop It Like It's Hot by Snoop Dogg.

July 15, 200717 yr I think the Rubinoos one (or whatever it's called) doesn't really sound too much like Girlfriend. I mean, they are alike, but I somehow doubt Girlfriend stole from it. The Peaches one though...welll...=/ They just sound really similar. And I have heard of Peaches before. Edited July 15, 200717 yr by Medicatedsoap
July 15, 200717 yr Peaches was a pretty big deal in the States at one point, so Avril cant get round this by saying "never heard of Peaches", because THAT would be blatant bollocks.... Face it folks, she's ripped off Toni Basil, she's ripped off The Rubinos and now it turns out she's ripped off Peaches as well... She has no thoughts or ideas of her own..... She's always been a bit derivitive (a wishy washy teenage Alanis is how I've personally always seen her tbh...), but you can get away with that, blatant fukkin' plagiarism however, is another matter.....
