A man has died and another is in intensive care after the pair jumped off a pier into the sea, prompting renewed warnings over the craze for 'tombstoning'.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has issued several alerts about the practice - where people jump off cliffs or structures into the sea - but said that yesterday's incident proves the message is going unheeded.

Thames Coastguard was called by police around 6.30pm yesterday after five middle aged men jumped off Clacton Pier, Essex, into the sea. Two men were reported to be unconscious in the water.

A rescue helicopter was scrambled along with two lifeboats and succeeded in reaching the pair.

However, one of the men later died and the second remains in intensive care at Colchester General Hospital, Essex.

Anthony Mayhew, duty watch manager for Thames Coastguard, said: "Once again, we see another fatality sustained by jumping from cliffs or structures into water.

"People of all ages are still not getting the message," he said.

Authorities first alerted the public to the risks following the death of father-of-six Delwyn Jones, 46, from South Wales. He was killed after leaping 30ft into the sea at low tide at Berry Head, near Torbay, Devon, in the early hours of Father's Day, June 17.

At least one other death and a number of serious injuries from tombstoning had been reported before yesterday's incident.

This has happened where I live but its teenagers that do it, no-one seriously injured so far but it will happen eventually.
