Posted July 8, 200718 yr TERRORIST suspects living in Britain are getting tens of thousands of pounds in State benefits – despite being publicly linked to Al Qaeda. Documents released by the Treasury show the families of four men named on the United Nations terrorist list are claiming £65,000 a year in income-related benefits, as well as thousands more in housing and council-tax benefit. The families are thought to include relatives of jailed hate preacher Abu Hamza. Other well-known figures on the list include the radical cleric Abu Qatada and Sajid Badat, who is serving 13 years for plotting a shoe-bomb attack. Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said yesterday that the revelations raise serious questions about the Govern-ment’s handling of the terrorist threat. “First, the Government display their complete inability to monitor terror suspects safely, with several absconding from control orders,” he said. “Now it appears the Government may be funding them. “This would make a complete mockery of Gordon Brown’s rhetoric about cracking down on the assets of terror suspects.” The UN terrorist list is compiled from intelligence sources across the globe and provides one of the most comprehensive sources of information on Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Individuals on the list include some of the world’s most-wanted terrorists, such as Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omah. Thirteen men on the list are thought to be living in Britain. Two are in jail and at least one is under a Government control order. The Home Office declined to say whether the other 10 are being monitored by police. Under United Nations rules, the Government is supposed to freeze all their financial assets. Only “basic expenses” are allowed, to meet human rights laws. But Treasury figures show that four of the families involved claim benefits, including Income Support, Child Benefit, Child Tax Credit, Disability Living Allow-ance and Carer’s Allowance. Between them, they receive £5,400 a month – equivalent to £64,800 a year. But that does not include the thousands they also receive in housing and council -tax benefit. The Treasury says it does not have these figures. Under the rules, a suspect’s wife can claim benefits only under a special licence. The Government admits that household finances are “generally pooled” and that any family income is likely to be available to the terrorist suspect. But, it says, safeguards will prevent the money being misspent. The Treasury would not comment in detail. But some experts believe terror suspects may be able to get round the rules. Tory MP Greg Hands, one of the first to highlight the case of Abu Hamza, said he had grave concerns about the amount being paid. “No one would want to deny Child Benefit,” he said, “but this is an awful lot of money. We need an urgent review aimed at bringing the figure right down, because I have a very real concern that the money could be used by the terror suspects. “Abu Hamza was subject to an asset freezing order, but was still able to wheel and deal in the property market, with Treasury knowledge. Those loopholes are still there.” Former Tory security spokes-man Patrick Mercer said: “People will be completely outraged by this. People on a terror list, should have all their assets frozen. Why they should be receiving large sums in benefits is completely beyond me.” The Treasury refused to name four terrorist suspects involved, saying it would be “unfair”. The 13 men on the UN terror list, thought to be living in Britain, are all accused of having links to Al Qaeda, but almost all deny involvement in terrorism. They are: Sajid Badat, 28. Former Glouc-ester grammar-school boy serving 13 years for plotting to set off a shoe bomb on a flight to America with Richard Reid. Pulled out of plot at last minute Abu Hamza, 49. Egyptian-born hook-handed, one-eyed preacher serving seven years for soliciting murder and inciting racial hatred. Listed by the UN under his real name, Mostafa Ibrahim Uthman Mahmoud, 46. Thought to be the real name of radical cleric Abu Qatada, facing deportation to Jordan, where he has been sentenced to life for terrorism. Thought to be under Government control order. Ghuma Abd’Rabbah, 49. Lib-yan, lives in Birmingham, has a British passport. One of five in Britain accused of fund-raising for banned Libyan Islamic Fight-ing Group, linked to Al Qaeda. Abd Al-Rahman Al-Faqih, 47. Libyan-born, living in Birming-ham. Accused by America of providing fake passports and money to members of the LIFG. Saad Rashed Mohammed Al-Faqih, 50. Iraqi-born Saudi living in London. Founded Movement for Islamic Reform in Arabia, said to have Al Qaeda links. Khalid Abd Al-Rahman Hamd Al-Fawaz, 44. Kuwaiti. Living in London. Accused by the FBI of involvement in bombing Ameri-can embassies. Mohammed Al-Ghabra, 27. Syrian-born, has a British passport, lives in East London. Accused by the US of raising funds to train terrorists. Mohammed Benhammedi, 40. Libyan living in the Midlands. Said to be a key LIFG financier. Hani Al-Sayyid Al-Sebai, 46. July 8, 200718 yr The second word of the report you quote is "suspect". Are you suggesting that people suspected of a crime should be left to starve? As for relatives of people convicted of terrorist offences getting benefits, why shouldn't they? None of us can choose our relatives so why should anyone be punished because of what their relatives have done?

Absolutely correct mate, the relatives of people who happen to have committed crime should NOT be made to suffer for their uncle, auntie, second fukkin' cousin twice removed whatever's offences.. Typical fukkin' "outraged Daily Mail reader from Middle England" c**p this is tbh.... <_< I'm sure nobody tried to apportion blame on the relatives of Bobby Sands or Dominic McGlinchy (notorious IRA terrorists..) for their crimes or tried to stop them from claiming whatever benefit or other..... Oh, but of course that's DIFFERENT though innit, the IRA were white and Christian..... <_<
July 8, 200718 yr Oh, but of course that's DIFFERENT though innit, the IRA were white and Christian..... <_< CATHOLIC!...... or dont you know the difference between catholic and christian?... :)
July 8, 200718 yr try.... 'id better not blow innocent people up because my family wont get hand outs'... Do you think someone who is prepared to kill dozens of innocent people will be deterred by that? Whether you do or not, it's still not a reason for punishing someone for something done by one of their relatives. I repeat my earlier point - none of us can choose our relatives.
July 8, 200718 yr CATHOLIC!...... or dont you know the difference between catholic and christian?... :) Erm, and here was me thinking that Catholics were Christians.... OR don't you think Catholics worship Christ then....? (Christ-ian = a person who worships Christ..), like DUUUUH...... :P :P

How far do you want to take this....? Shall we start targetting the families of Paedophiles...? Burglars..? Muggers...? TV Licence or Council Tax evaders....? <_<

I repeat my earlier point - none of us can choose our relatives. i object to paying taxes to keep scroungers, im not bothered about their race, colour, creed, benefits are a safety net. if these people thought so much of their families then maybe they wouldnt act in such an unexceptable barabaric way.

My house has been burgled and I've been mugged. I don't see why the families of the people who committed those crimes should be punished for something they didn't do.

I don't see why the families of the people who committed those crimes should be punished for something they didn't do. i think that if the consequences of MY actions impacted upon my family, then id think twice before committing the crime. im not bothered what happens to me, but id hate my loved ones to suffer because of me... i think thats a legitimate deterant.
