Posted July 17, 200717 yr I'm just having this debate with someone and I think yes. To me a one hit wonder is an act who have one HUGE hit and a second single that flops and are unlikely to ever have a successful single again. What is your take on it?
July 17, 200717 yr if a single enters the top 75 it is classed as a hit, whether it flops or not, therefore no, they are not one hit wonders because they have already had 2 hits (agreed one flopped tho! but it was still a hit!)

I'm not sure but I read somewhere that only the top 40 singles are classed as hits. But I'm not sure.
July 17, 200717 yr Author agreed one flopped tho! but it was still a hit! A contradiction in terms, therefore my point is proven. :D
July 17, 200717 yr Oh god. As I live in the US definitely not. If I hear Over My Head or How To Save A Life one more time on the radio I'm going to drive off a cliff.

July 17, 200717 yr No, because they're selling albums off the back of both songs Plus they're dad rock so weren't ever going to be chart toppers :D
July 17, 200717 yr id say no as the 2nd single still made the top 20 and pushed album sales so it wasnt really that big of a flop
July 18, 200717 yr id say no as the 2nd single still made the top 20 and pushed album sales so it wasnt really that big of a flop Exactly :) I Totally agree
July 18, 200717 yr Oh god. As I live in the US definitely not. If I hear Over My Head or How To Save A Life one more time on the radio I'm going to drive off a cliff. IMO 'How To Save A Life' is a bloody awful dirge - I can't wait for it to finally drop out of the top 40, so JK & J can't play it any more!
July 18, 200717 yr I would say no because they have two well known songs. I know Every one sings Over My Head!

I full agree - A TRUE one hit wonder is an act that has just one number 1 single and nothing else charting ever. You can see a full list of all the TRUE one hit wonders HERE just select chart features. Other one hit wonders are acts that hit the official chart just once. A flop is a single that doesn't hit the official chart. A single that charts from 40 - 75 is classed as a minor hit.
July 18, 200717 yr I'm not sure but I read somewhere that only the top 40 singles are classed as hits. But I'm not sure. The top 40 is not the official chart - it's just the stupid BBC's shortened chart policy. The official chart is Top 75. Shortly to be increased to Top 100 in line with many other countries. Countries like USA - Canada - France - Germany - Holland - Brazil etc. Between 1969 & 1978 when the Official Chart was Top 50 - The stupid BBC shortened it to Top 30. Before 1969 the BBC had there own Top 20. This was eventually abandoned after they had 3 joint No. 1's on a week in 1968. The 3 joint No. 1's were: Bee Gees - I've Got To Get A Message To You Beach Boys - Do It Again Herb Alpert - This Guy's In Love With You Edited July 19, 200717 yr by Euro Music
