What happened to these top, world class signings they were supposed to be making? Keiron Richardson? Dickson Etuhu? Michael Chopra?

And Richardson saying in an interview they can break the top four. Yeah, if the table's reversed...

Is this post meant to be aimed at a certain Sunderland fan?!?!

I never for a second believed Sunderland were the sort of club to attract world-class players.

Well, maybe Julio Arca.

Really dont think theres any need for a topic on this, but fair game

Use a bit of common sense. With our premiership record, do you really think any world-class players would sign for us, even with Roy Keane in charge? As long as we've got a good, solid squad with a lot of depth by mid-August, i'll be happy

And Sunderland fans are passionate but theyre not completely stupid, or naïve enough to believe that we'll break the top 4. The majority of fans will be pleased with a top 15 finish, which is where I can see us ending up.

I don't think people realise that when youre rebuilding a squad you have to start from the bottom and work your way up. The "world-class signings" will come eventually.. probs not until next season though

Well for starters, no Sunderland fans on here ever believed we'd get world-class signings. I certainly didnt expect any to sign over the summer

No, I can't say I've read anything on here (though maybe I have) but there does seem to be a lot of completely deluded fans around, though it can probably said for most teams, mainly Leeds! I want them to survive and be in the Premiership, they'd easily be in my top 10 prem teams! But atleast be realistic. To have so many people predicting such a brilliant season when the quality of the Premiership has never been stronger is nothing short of ridiculous.

Who's been predicting us to have such a "brilliant season" like?

As i've explained, a top 15 finish would suit me

I would actually like to see this comment by Mr.Richardson about breaking into the top 4.

Maybe he was on about his cousin Charley breaking into the Top 4 of Big Brother?

The comment by Richardson's on the BBC Sport's page

But come on seriously, which Sunderland fans are moronic enough to believe that!?!

i saw that, he then changed his mind to breaking into the UEFA cup.

I would be happy to surivie the season and then get better players for a second season then start to do well again like we are ment to do.

Exactly, that was the original plan

All this talk of "world-class signings" and European places is utter bollocks. The fans will be happy to maintain premiership status, and lets face it, after what we've been through the past couple of prem seasons I think the fans deserve some success

I asked the exact same question the other day in the transfers thread

and moving onto Newcastle I just love the ambition of Sam Allardyce  he's aiming for the Carling Cup :o now that's ambition! for a club that's supposedly so huge

I know i read that and laughed. Well I suppose they have to work there way up from the legototot cup they won however long ago

It gets better!

West Ham and Portsmouth are spending silly money, says Quinn!

"Niall Quinn says he has been horrified by the actions of fellow Premiership chairmen and has accused them of damaging football's economy by paying inflated prices for average players.

The Sunderland chairman has deliberately taken a back seat this summer as Roy Keane presses ahead with a rebuilding programme at the Stadium of Light that could eventually cost £30million."

But Quinn says agents are reaping the benefit of the Premiership spending spree and singled out Portsmouth and West Ham for particular criticism.

He said: "There's six or seven new owners who are spending money but are they getting the type of player that the top four want? I don't think so.

"If I was going to spend a fortune breaking the bank, I would be going after the players Liverpool or Man United want to sign.

"But, in the middle, people are fighting each other and raising the prices for the same players. You can see it with West Ham and Portsmouth. The agents are having an absolute beano. It's like a property market, where estate agents own half the property or, in West Ham's case, it looks like all the property."

Quinn also hit out at those chairmen who cannot resist the limelight. He has promised not to decide who moves to the club.

"What horrifies me is people who've made money out of property or biscuit tins telling a class act who's managing their club who they should be signing," he said.

"That's for the birds, but it happens in a lot of cases. I see players signing and chairmen standing there with the jersey and their arms around the player and I say, 'Oh my God, what are they doing?' It's their call, they may like that and may be in it for that, but it's not right.

"If I start telling Roy Keane who to sign I'm going against my own doctrine. Football is football, administration is administration.

"I'm 100 per cent behind Roy on this. People are being pressurised into signing players from videos and giving agents lots of money. We won't do that. We have to keep our heads when this is going on."

Quinn, who led the £10m Drumaville Consortium's takeover last summer, added: "I want people to look at this relationship and say that's the way a club should be run.

"I pay the bills. I know exactly what Roy is doing. I see the plan and the philosophy and I've yet to question one of his signings because I understand the route he's taking."

This would be the same Portsmouth who's main signing is someone you bid the same amount for but rejected you, Niall? Not only that but they've also signed Distan and Hreidarsson on frees. That's two quality players for nothing! And this is the same West Ham who have also SOLD 4 players for far more than they're worth would it? And you're the chairman who's spent £10m+ on Richardson and Chopra. And then another £7-8m on four more players who are compltely unproven in the Premiership. The words sour and grapes spring to mind!

Don't worry Roy Keane is a great man motivator.

He'll probably threaten the team that if they lose they'll have to spend one hour with Kieran Richardson's cousin as punishment.

actualy they got bored of waiting for Nugent to decide so told him to get lost

Tbh, I think the fact that someone's taken the time to single out Sunderland and make a topic about them is pathetic. 19 other teams in the premiership, and yet Sunderland have been targeted.. why? We're signing players, bidding for players and going about our business just like any other team is atm so I can't for the life of me see why any of this warrants a topic
