Robbie Williams wants to record a song with former The Smiths bassist Andy Rourke.

The 'Angels' singer has contacted Manchester supergroup Freebass - which comprises of Andy, New Order bass guitarist Peter Hook and Mani, who has played bass for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream - and offered to lend his vocals to a track.

Speaking at the London launch of the new documentary 'Inside The Smiths' yesterday (19.07.07), Andy said: "We've never been able to find a singer, and to be honest they are pretty big shoes to fill.

"We've got about 18 tracks and after a few conversations decided to get in touch with some of the singers we know. Ian Brown has done a song, Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream, Tim Burgess from The Charlatans is on one, and recently we got a call from Robbie Williams, believe it or not, saying he wanted to do a track with us. It's a bit bizarre but we'll see how that goes."

Andy - who appears with his former Smiths bandmate drummer Mike Joyce in the documentary - revealed the band plan to release an album next year and then hit the road.

He said: "We haven't played a show yet, but the plan is to go out on tour next summer and hopefully have something out by the spring."

Andy also revealed the trio's initial attempts to find a vocalist involved a search for a missing person.

He explained: "We auditioned quite a few people and they either looked great but sounded s**t or vice-versa.

"We did find a singer who lived in Wigan and we got him in the studio but then he went missing and we had to put out a missing person's notice for him on the news and in the papers saying, 'Have you seen this man?'

"When we finally found him we discovered he'd had a nervous breakdown. At that point we thought, 'It's not really working!' "

Once again, my interests collide in the Twilight Zone! I just saw Morrissey Tuesday night (for the first time ever!) and he was brilliant!! I'm now on a Smiths/Morrissey kick/obsession...so it's really odd that NOW there's talk of this, lol!

Robbie has always been a massive Morrissey fan ^_^

Yeah, but remember when Rob and Morrissey were meant to duet at the BRIT Awards in 2005, Mor cancelled at the last minutes due to him thinking it would no be good for his image,. Talk about being up your own arse. -_-

I have huge respect for Morrissey as a song-writer though, but himself and Johnny Marr were the Smiths, and this is only the bassist, so it's not overly exciting imo.

I was never a fan :(

I find them depressing, but they are probebly the best songwriting due ever when it comes to lyrics. ^_^

WILLIAMS MISTAKEN FOR WILLIAMS

American comedian ROBIN WILLIAMS regularly receives phone calls from woman mistaking him for British pop singer ROBBIE WILLIAMS. The Mrs Doubtfire star admits the similar spelling of their names has led to some puzzled, and disappointed, young ladies. Williams, 55 says, "We do tend to get phone calls from women looking for him. 'Oh, you're the hairy one. Damn.'"

( So is Robin Williams's number in the phone book then? )

More about it from this interview, thanks to TRWS.

Funny that Robin should start talking about music because fellow rehab regular Robbie Williams has been complaining that when he's in America, people still mix him up with Robin.

The two have not crossed paths but Robin says he's well aware of Robbie by reputation.

"We do tend to get phone calls for women looking for him," said Robin, "until they realise, 'Oh, you're the hairy one. Damn'.

"I've never met him but I would love to have a sing-off."

So does this mean that we could look forward to the two Mr Williams duetting on Let Me Entertain You?

"I'm afraid not," laughed Robin. "I listen to Coldplay."

because fellow rehab regular Robbie Williams

How does twice in a decade make him a regular.

Anyway, it is very funny. Robin is such a legend and one of the funniest men on the planet. Also one of the most talented 'serious' actors ever, imo, Insomnia and One Hour Photo are both amazing. ^_^

He's (just like) the one

ONE of the biggest names in pop will be brought to life in a tribute show at The Playhouse in Weston on Friday (August 3).

Robbie Williams career started as a member of boy band Take That, which he left in 1995 to begin his solo career.

Robbie impersonator, Lee Pashley, aims to capture and relive the music and essence of the icon.

Songs such as Let Me Entertain You, Angels, Rock DJ, She's The One and Millennium will be recreated by the former Butlins Red Coat.

In addition to the top hits, Lee Pashley also aims to capture the cheek and mischievous nature of the singer with plenty of Robbie-style jokes and patter.

Professionally choreographed with dynamic dance routines, colourful costumes, the show boasts a live band and live vocals in a performance packed with some of the biggest singles of the nineties and the current decade.
