Robbie Williams: the next Captain Kirk?

Friday 27th July

http://www.whatsontv.co.uk/news/1527

Robbie Williams is reportedly in discussions to make his film debut as Captain James T Kirk in Star Trek XI.

The Stoke-born popstar voiced the part of Dougal in The Magic Roundabout remake in 2005, but has since turned down a number of starring roles.

Now Robbie, 33, is talking to director JJ Abrams about taking on the role of Captain Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek film, reports the Daily Star. The character was originally made famous by William Shatner in the sci-fi television series, which first aired in 1966.

Abrams, who co-created hit series Lost, said: "I think he would be a good Captain Kirk. The Kirk in my movie is quite young - it's like the early years.

"But I can't comment on who we are casting just yet. You'll have to wait and see."

Leonard Nimoy will be playing Spock in the movie, while Heroes actor Zachary Quinto will play the role of the young Spock. The 30-year-old said: "It is pretty incredible to be part of something so iconic."

Abrams is also hoping to find a way to bring William Shatner into the film. "We are desperately trying to find a way to put him in this movie," he explained.

You're not going to get what you want

Cristina Odone

The Observer

Keith Richards is, apparently, going to pick up more than £4.5m for his autobiography. There are three biographies of Robbie Williams, all bestsellers. A mini-industry has cropped up around Pete Doherty, including his mother's story of her 'prodigal son' and his own 'autobiography', The Books of Albion, charting the ex-Libertine's rises and falls. These are not amiable celebrities. These are bad boys with a touch of genius, who come up with songs such as 'Satisfaction', who know how to play the biography game.

Drugs, sexual incontinence, arrests and very public attempts at rehab: the trajectory is more or less the same. The public wants to read revelations about how many one-night stands the celebs have had, or how many fixes a day. It's not just the frisson of danger that turns people into Peeping Toms when it comes to Keith, Pete and Robbie. They hang out with Mick Jagger and Elton John, are linked to Kate Moss and Kylie Minogue, and have produced songs like 'Angels' and 'Gimme Shelter'. They're bad, and they're BIG.

So we justify paying £20 for gaining a glimpse of this life of excess and success. And the star and his agent hint at unexpurgated accounts of what it was like - to have sex with Kate Moss or steal a girl off Mick.

Given how much money rides on these life stories, no one should expect the truth will out. Whether they use a ghost-writer, biographer or (as Keith Richards will do) co-author, these men will control the information that gets out and be mindful of their image. The celebrity biography's role is to hint that you'll get what you want, but never to deliver it.

A writer I know, given 'unlimited' access to a big star, found himself in a straitjacket when it came to writing the book. He had to barter with the subject, his manager, PR and an army of employees to include even the most banal observation. Secrets were kept, not shared. Similarly, read Doherty's The Books of Albion and you will be left in the dark about how Kate subsidises Pete. Dip into Feel, Robbie Williams's official biography, and you won't find out why Cameron Diaz and Robbie had such a falling out or what provoked Williams's vitriolic attacks on Christina Aguilera. And when it comes to co-writing his memoirs with James Fox, will Richards really let us in on the way the Stones handled female fans?

Biographies and autobiographies have always had an element of invention: authors project their own theories on their subjects, the noteworthy can't resist churning out self-serving memories. The difference with celebrity tomes is that as the stakes grow higher, so does the ride we're all taken on.

Moscow in Mayfair

When Boris Berezovsky, the London-based Russian oligarch, narrowly escaped an assassination bid recently, he was living out his own worst fears. Ever since Putin's supporter became one of his most vocal critics and fled to the West, Berezovsky has feared an attempt on his life. As a result, when the oligarch ventures out, he travels in a convoy of two identical armoured Maybach limousines. His Mayfair office is always in a high state of alert. Visitors are quizzed by a nondescript doorman who then punches a code into the lift, allowing it to go to Boris's eyrie. When the doors open, you are met by a blonde bombshell assistant, and a huge bodyguard. The one chink in his armour is the oligarch's penchant for high society: he covets invitations to the Royal Enclosure at Ascot and to Prince Michael of Kent's birthday drinks. Forget polonium-210 and Kalashnikovs: Putin would do better with Debrett's and a schedule of 'the season'.

It was a perfect hello for Posh and Becks as he begins to spread the soccer gospel with his new side LA Galaxy.

The Mirror doing what they do best - being completelly stupid.

So many points are bull$h!t in that short few sentences. First since when does Rob live like a recluse for heavens sake? Like everything, those idiotic fools obviously don't know the definition of English words, or they would know that someone who went out to clubs pretty much every night for months (after and before rehab), and is constantly out playing footy every bloody day is the complete opposite of a recluse. It is so shocking that this god-awful paper is still in business. <_<

Oh and where are they getting £170K earnings from? A very accurate number, but an ovbiously wrong one. He has sold just under 1 million albums iin the US, I'd say he gets at the very least $1 per album sold, that's already near $1m, then his singles, tours etc. He may not have broken the US, but he has certainly made alot more than 170k there, and has had a pretty impressive amount of success when you consider how little time he has spent working there since 99. Anyone with half a brain cell would know that to break the US you have to set aside 6months to a year and work your arse off, not spend a few weeks appearing on a handful of TV shows. And I am so sick of the whole "Robbie's carear is on the rocks" c**p, it is so annoying, and I would just love nothing more than for Rob to come back next year bigger than ever before, and shut all those begrudges up once and for all.

Oh and Beckham probebly does'nt even know what the word savvy means  He just gets told to do things by Posh and Fuller etc.

Scotty...the papers just keep saying that & will continue to say it out of pure spite...they have it in for Rob for a long time but they will not be able to keep him down...not with the talent that he has.Where do they get this career on the rocks from...he has just finshed a world tour where he played to 3.5 million people....is that the sign of someone whose career is on the slide.....IC sold 7.4 million or something & Rudebox sold 4.5 million with no personal promo from Rob on tv or radio....he has got the best reviews in a long time from the music critics for Rudebox....( I think you need to post them again to remind us )....

Rob's career is far from over & the press know it...they just like to keep writing $h!t because they know that it annoys Rob & also annoys his fans.......Rob has that Xfactor that draws people to him & he has a long career ahead of him.

I have stopped worrying about it...I know it's annoying but you cannot do anything about it.....

Rob needs the break he is having & he is really enjoing this LA Vale footie & sharing it with his fans which is good of him & I am sure that relaxation & enjoyment helps him when he goes into his studio to work & I think we will see the fruits of that relaxation in his music..I am so looking forward to his next album......

PUT ROBBIE ON THE MAP

RICHARD AULT

The Sentinel

09:20 - 30 July 2007

http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/new/images/uploaded/sentinel_fp.gif

Thousands of visitors could be attracted to Stoke-on-Trent if the city develops a Robbie Williams tourist trail.Hundreds already arrive in the Potteries to see locations from the singer's past.

These include the Red Lion pub, in Burslem, where he lived as a youngster.

But many fans are disappointed that Robbie's life in the city isn't marked.

A group of Italian fans has just spent five days on a Potteries pilgrimage.

Robbie fan Jacopo Scarabelli, of Milan, said: "What is most strange is that there is nothing with Robbie's picture on it, or any plaques."

England Rocks, a campaign run by tourism promoter Enjoy England, has already produced a tourist map which highlights significant locations from England's rich musical heritage.

Now there is a call for a Robbie Williams trail to give tourism a major boost.

Ray White, of Enjoy England, said: "We are using our map to promote music tourism, there is definitely a market for people who want to visit significant locations.

"A Robbie Williams tour would bring more visitors into Stoke-on-Trent."

Robbie's mum, Jan Williams, said: "I think it would be a good idea as long as it was done properly. As long as it is bringing income to Stoke-on-Trent, I think Robert would support it."

Andy Davies, of the Potteries and Newcastle Hotel and Guest House Association, who owns the Corrie Guest House, in Newcastle, said: "In recent times we have had four or five separate groups who have come to stay with us at the Corrie because they were taking a tour of Robbie Williams related sites." John Lowther, director of Trentham Leisure, which owns Trentham Gardens, said: "Robbie is one of the area's biggest assets."

Tourism expert Paul Williams said: "There is an opportunity to use his association with the city positively. Once people's attention is caught, they may be inclined to learn more about Stoke-on-Trent, its culture and people, its attractions and events." A spokesman for Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: "We are keen to promote the fact that Robbie Williams is a son of the Potteries. But we don't have any plans to do a trail."

Do you think a Robbie tourist trail would be good?

Post your comments here.

Well said, and I agree. But the more they put him down the more I want him to come back more successful than ever before. I have a really good feeling the next album will be his best yet. :w00t:

A tourist trail round Stoke?

Yep

People are complaining because they don't see the point as Stoke is so run down. -_-

But a lot of people do go there because of the Robbie connection, so not a bad idea, and I know so many people who have been and noticed that there is nothing that links Robbie with Stoke on Trent as expected. He is proud of his roots, and this is a way of showing how proud they should be of him.

So please support this idea, if his fans don't then nothing will be done.

Edited by Susie

I do support it. It's a great idea. They can have one of those 'footsteps in the pavement' walks like the literary one in Dublin.

Do you think that Rob would be happy with such a trail.

He had hoped to return to Stoke one day to live....would this chnge his mind......

I have visions of him opening the curtains in the morning & see all these people looking in the windows.........

'Ooooooooooooooops'.........................I think he may well decide to stay in LA.............

JOURNEY AROUND OLD HAUNTS OF OUR GLOBAL POP STAR

The Sentinel

Any Robbie Williams tourist trail would undoubtedly take in the first school that he attended in Stoke-on-Trent. As a pupil at Mill Hill primary school during the 1970s, Robbie was a pop star in the making.

It was there that teacher Hilary Leek photographed him as Joseph surrounded by angels during a performance of the nativity play at the school.

She said: "Robbie was a lovely, cheeky lad. He liked to keep everyone entertained, even then. He was the loveable rogue type.

"He had academic potential, but didn't always want to use it, he would rather have fun.

"Often, if we had worked hard in class, I would say to him, 'come on, amuse us for a few minutes', and he would. He would do impressions, he was a very good mimic. He had a good little voice as a singer, and he would tell jokes. But we had to stop him if he started telling his dad's jokes, because they were too blue.

"The school has been knocked down and rebuilt since Robbie was there, so it looks very different. But I would think a lot of places Robbie used to go either don't exist any more or have changed beyond recognition. A lot of fans would be happy simply to walk the same streets he did."

A whistle-stop tour through the singer's life in Stoke-on-Trent would start at Victoria Park Road in Tunstall, where he was born and lived up until the age of two. He then moved on to the Red Lion at Burslem, where he spent his formative years with his mum, Jan, and dad, Pete Conway.

The Red Lion regularly receives visits from Robbie fans and previous owners have complained of receiving calls from Italy, Germany and the rest of Europe, asking to speak to the star.

Pub manager Lucy Ferreday said: "We do still get Robbie Williams fans coming in. Not all the time, but when they do come, there tends to be a big group of them. We probably get a group of Robbie fans coming in about once every two months."

Robbie's mum, Jan Williams, said: "I've got pictures of Robert in the Red Lion.

"He used to like to eat a toasted tuna melt I used to make and sell in the bar, in fact he was talking about it the other day."

After leaving Mill Hill, Robbie attended St Margaret Ward Secondary School, which in his day was called the Blessed William Southern School.

School pal Taz Ali, aged 32, of Burslem, said: "He was a nice lad, we got on very well.

"I can remember him when he was auditioning with Take That. He would come back to the sixth form and bring samples of his music. At the time he was into Hip Hop and a lot of mixing. He would record some music of his own when he was in the studios with Take That. It was stuff that he would mix, it was quite good."

The Queens Theatre in Burslem, where Robbie first appeared on stage, would be an important stop on the trail. Brian Rawlins starred as Fagin alongside a 15-year-old Robbie Williams as the Artful Dodger, in North Staffordshire Amateur Operatic Society's production of Oliver!, at the Queens Theatre, in 1988.

Now aged 71, and society chairman, Brian said: "He was a nice lad, a delightful boy to work with. He had star quality, it was clear he was very talented. He did two shows with us, Oliver! and the Pickwick Papers, both at the Queen's. He was a credit to us.

"I actually met Robbie and his mother the day before he went for his audition with Take That. I was a bit worried about the whole thing, but obviously it all worked out very well.

"It is phenomenal the impact he has had. I did know Tommy Steele, who was the first British superstar to have all the girls hero worshipping him. In a way, they were similar characters. They both had a lot of self-confidence. Tommy was a cheeky Cockney lad with lots of self confidence and Robbie was similar. They both had the drive to go out and achieve what they wanted."

No tour would be complete without a trip to Robbie's beloved Vale Park.

Port Vale chairman Bill Bratt said: "There's an awful lot of Robbie fans and people are interested, with Port Vale and the Red Lion getting visits from fans.

"If you look at Elvis Presley, which is more my generation, people go to visit his birthplace by the thousands. There's no reason why we can't have a Robbie trail. He's a massive star and he can still go on to bigger and better things. We'd be glad to be part of it at Port Vale."
