Look on the bright side, at least when you fail miserably to win the world cup (as England always do, and then you crucify your managers as if it's completely all their fault - no wonder Scolari knocked it back, smart man...) you'll have a ready-made excuse....

Winning it back in '66 was probably the worst possible thing that could have happened, because since then the English people have had rather unrealistic expectations of winning it again, and you hype your players up to ridiculous levels, and then blame the perfectly competent managers (as you did with Bobby Robson and others in the past..) when it all falls apart...

Couldn't have put it better myself, Scott, totally agree.

Actually if I remember when they won the world cup in '66, by playing every game at Wembley was their star striker not Jimmy Greaves who got injured and they put in Geoff Hurst, a noble reserve and well we all know what happened then, so I don't know why all you Engerlaaaand fans are contemplating suicide just yet.

Give the other 10 players some credit, unless you think you are a 1 man team.

Sven is so predictable. If he has a chance of been fit for any of the games he'll be on the plane to Germany. Thats what he's told sky sports.

Ooooh fook!

Ferguson is being realistic. Fergie will be thinking of if Rooney plays and he gets injured AGAIN in the world cup, it will have reprocussions for Man Utd next season.

On a better note for England fans David Nugent had exactly the same injury as Rooney and it took him 6 weeks to recover.

Any Premiership manager worth their salt is gonna go "uh-uh" to any thoughts of putting a star player at possible long-term injury risk, World Cup or no World Cup. Ferguson's been in the game for over two decades now, love him or loathe him (and personally, I think he's an arrogant sod...), there's nothing he doesn't know about the game....

Yes it really does like Rooney won't play in the world cup, well tbh its not very clear what is going on as different people are saying different things.

If we do lose Rooney then Sven has to plan Carrick in a holding midfield role and have Gerrard and Lampard support Owen in attack.

Fergie Gives Rooney A Chance

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Wayne Rooney only has a small fracture and a slight hairline injury to his damaged foot.

The fresh problem, that caused so much consternation and speculation on Wednesday, is no more than a hairline fracture, according to Ferguson, so the England attacker could still be back in training in six weeks' time.

After picking up the Player of the Year award at United, Rooney will spend time in an oxygen chamber as he bids to speed up his recovery from the injury he sustained at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

"There's no update and I think the important thing is for us, as a club, to stop giving statements out," explained Ferguson to Sky Sports News.

"We've given a proper statement, a proper message out, about what we intend to do with the boy. As from today, the oxygen chamber arrives here this afternoon.

"He will get treatment, hopefully that helps but there's no conclusive evidence it does improve injuries. But there's no evidence against it, in the sense that it won't do any harm. Anyway, everything is worth a try at this stage. As I've said, we'll do our very best to get him there. It's in our interests as well as England's.

"There won't be any statements from the club again. Every week, England will get an update on exactly how he's doing and, if they want to send the physio or the doctor up, they're free to do so.

"The break he's got is in his fourth metatarsal, it's a small fracture. The one slightly above it is nothing to worry about at all, nothing at all. It doesn't affect his recovery, there's no damage at all. There's a slight hairline, you know.

"The oxygen tent will be here. All the treatment will be here. I mean I can't put a deadline on it simply because the scan will tell you everything. In a few weeks' time, we'll send him back for a scan. If it's healed then we've got the progress we want. If it hasn't, we've got to carry on with the treatment. There's nothing you can do about it.

"It's really in the hands of how Wayne improves. Some players over the years, in our experience, Gary Neville ended up having his pinned because it hadn't recovered properly. David Beckham, I think myself, made a mistake in joining up with England in Dubai. I think he'd have been much fitter if he'd stayed here but he wanted to go to Dubai with the England squad. I don't think he was fit enough to play in the World Cup, to be honest with you.

"Roy Keane, I think, was 10-11 weeks. He could've played in the reserves the week he was leaving, I think it was 10 weeks, you know, so it really depends. Different metatarsal bones - some are more serious than others as was the case with Rooney. The case with Wayne [in Euro 2004], his last injury was 14 weeks.

"We don't want to hear of that kind of recovery but, nonetheless, they're all different degrees of that type of injury. To go back to the first point, we need to wait and see how it develops and improves when he does the next scans but we'll give him every chance."

Ferguson is keen to reiterate that Rooney must be at his best do himself justice in the world's premier footballing event.

"He'll want to do himself justice," he explained. "It'd be an even bigger disappointment for the England fans. The quarter final of the World Cup is not an easy game.

"Everybody wants to win the World Cup. I don't know who they are likely to play, it could be Portugal. They're not bad. They will think they have every chance of getting through to the semi-finals.

"We just have to wait and see. We won't give any more statements. If a word is missing or a word is added, they'll say you never said that last time and make fools of us.

"I don't think there should be statements now. We're giving him treatment, we hope he'll play, if he can. If not, he'll get properly recovered before the season starts next season.

"We won't do anything to jeopardise the boy - period. It doesn't matter what the recovery period is. Obviously, when you get an injury, you must have doubts but we'll try and do our best.

"That's it. Finished."
