Arctic Monkeys are worried they have promised to get too many people on the guest list for their shows at Old Trafford this weekend.

The huge gigs at Lancashire County Cricket Ground, Manchester, will be by far their biggest so far.

And members say they have been telling mates they can get in on hospitality for months gone by.

Guitarist Jamie Cook told the NME: "I'm a bit worried now because every time we've played a gig in Sheffield lately, like the Leadmill, and people have been asking for tickets I've been saying, 'Wait until Manchester, it will be alright.'

"And everyone's remembered! There's about 70 from the local boozer. It's tiny but there's still 70 odd people coming down on the coach!"

Frontman Alex Turner has taken a different approach, however. "I've said, 'Just send us a text the day beforehand,'" he explained. "They'll just have a tantrum if they can't get in, there's nowt else they can do."

Japanese Beatles band The Parrots open Manchester show

Arctic Monkeys's first giant gig at Lancashire County Cricket Club's Old Trafford ground has kicked off this afternoon (July 28).

Proceedings got underway at 3.30 pm (BST) when Japanese band The Parrots, a tribute to The Beatles, took to the stage.

The band were picked by Arctic Monkeys to open their Old Trafford gigs after seeing them while touring in Japan.

"They're a Japanese Beatles tribute. We've seen them a couple of times when we've been over there and they were amazing," frontman Alex Turner told NME.COM. "We've always said it would be great to get them, though we couldn't really take them on a tour, so when this came up I thought it would be good to get them to open it. I didn't know what tunes they're going to do. They might come and do some really weird ones."

As it turned out the band did pick an eclectic set list including the likes of 'Yellow Submarine' album track 'Hey Bulldog' and 'I'm Down', the b-side from the single release of 'Help'.

However the band - who performed in matching turquoise jackets and played replicas of the Fab Four's original instruments - also played a series of crowd favourites, with 'Day Tripper', 'Taxman', 'Come Together' and 'Back To The USSR', drawing loud sing-a-longs from the growing crowd.

They then wrapped up their set with a buzzing version of 'Revolution' and a lung-bursting rendition of 'Twist And Shout'

Arctic Monkeys' Old Trafford continues now with the band's hand-picked bill.

Amy Winehouse is due on stage next, with The Coral and Supergrass to follow, before the band themselves take the stage

Arctic Monkeys triumph at Old Trafford

There are sound problems again, but the band win the day

Arctic Monkeys have played the biggest headlining gig of their lives, as the triumphing on their first night (July 28) at Lancashire County Cricket Club's Old Trafford ground.

Taking to the stage at 8.45pm (BST) to the 'Rocky' theme and deafening cheers, the band confidently launched into current single 'Fluorescent Adolescent'.

If the audience's sing-a-long was loud during the opener, the cricket ground went ballistic for second song, number one hit, 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'.

They followed that up with 'Brianstorm' ensuring the Manchester audience kept rocking.

"Thank you, thanks for coming down everybody, have you had a good day so far?" asked frontman Alex Turner head of 'Still Take You Home' as the band barely paused for breath.

"Someone just threw the politest bottle on," noted Turner ahead of 'Dancing Shoes'. "It was a minature Bells, how polite!"

With the crowd loudly chanting "Yokshire, Yorkshire", revealing the number of fans who'd made the journey across The Pennies, Turner joked "what are you saying? You're $h!t? That's not polite" ahead of 'From The Ritz To The Rubble'.

Clearly in a chatty moody, the singer then introduced first single 'Fake Tales Of San Francisco' declaring "I wore a shirt, you could all have made an effort".

However echoing their sound problems at Glastonbury, the sound cut out midway through 'Balaclava' as the band played on unaware aware of the problem.

In good humour the crowd started using the football chant "you're not singing any more" alerting the band to the issues and after a short pause the speakers were eventually restored with Turner cursing his band's luck.

"Ever so sorry about that, that always happens to us," he moaned. "I was talking to you like Batman and you couldn't hear us. Joke's on me. Anyway let's put it behind us, here's 'Old Yellow Bricks'."

With the crowd recovering from the brief technical fault, the band then powered through the likes of 'Your Probably Couldn't See Me For The Lights But You Were Looking Straight At Me' and 'This House Is A Circus' without further incident.

Indulging in some War Of The Roses rivalry ahead of 'If You Were There Beware' the band got the crowd in Lancashire to chant "Yorkshire", however the audience were soon making plenty of noise on their own, as Turner invited the crowd to have a "sing-song" to 'Mardy Bum'.

With 'Do Me A Favour' stunning the crowd with its surf guitar beauty, the band then built up to rowdy finish playing 'View From The Afternoon' and a twilight rendition of 'When The Sun Goes Down' in quick succession.

With a flip-flop thrown on stage - "fancy coming in filp-flops" noted Turner - the band wound their set up with 'Leave Before The Lights Come On'.

Returning for the encore with 'Fluorescent Adolescent' b-side 'Plastic Tramp', the band were then joined by The Rascals member Miles Kane on guitar for '505' as Turner took over keyboards.

Having triumphed over the technical issues, there was a celebratory feel in the air as Arctic Monkeys - and the crowd in good voice - concluded the gig with 'A Certain Romance'.

"It's been a pleasure," declared Turner as the band left the stage. "I won't forget it!"

Arctic Monkeys played:

'Fluorescent Adolescent'

'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'

'Brianstorm'

'Still Take You Home'

'Dancing Shoes'

'From The Ritz To The Rubble'

'Fake Tales Of San Francisco'

'Balaclava'

'Old Yellow Bricks'

'Your Probably Couldn't See Me Because For The Lights But You Were Looking Straight At Me'

'This House Is A Circus'

'Teddy Picker'

'D Is For Danger'

'If You Were There Beware'

'Mardy Bum'

'Do Me A Favour'

BRILLIANT set list.

UGH. Amy Winehouse annoys me at gigs really. Her first album material, is better than the stuff on her Second album.

AMAZING Set list from Arctics as usual though!

There was filming crew there apparently yesterday so I think the set may pop up sometime on TV. :o

And all-sorts was meant to have happened yesterday. There was apparently a huge fight quite near the front.

That's an amazing set-list. Nice to see A Certain Romance as the last track again too :D

Btw does anyone have an MP3 of Plastic Tramp they could send to me? I've been wanting it for a while now.

Second headlining gig goes off without a hitch....almost!

Arctic Monkeys rounded off their second headlining show with another storming performance at Lancashire County Cricket Club tonight (July 29).

Although the band managed to escape the sound problems which affected their first show, the Sheffield four-piece had to stop the gig momentarily during 'Still Take You Home' when the crowd surged forward.

Singer Alex Turner announced to the crowd: "You're not going to believe this but can you all take a step back please?"

After a few minutes the band were able to carry on but then they had to stop briefly during 'Dancing Shoes' for the same reason.

Despite the minor crowd problems, their second show proved to be a triumph with much of the crowd belting out the words to a host of singles from their two albums including 'Fluorescent Adolescent', 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor', 'Brianstorm', 'When The Sun Goes Down' and debut album favourite 'Mardy Bum'.

In reference to the audience's participation, Turner quipped: "You're a lairy bunch you lot, lairier than yesterday apparently."

Later, the band were forced to stop midway through 'View From The Afternoon' because Turner was unable to contain his laughter when he spotted a member of the crowd dressed as the Bo Selecta caricature of Craig David.

"That is f***ing freaking me out," Turner told the audience before he added: "Get the camera on that guy."

As the Sheffield four-piece brought their second show to a close the band played 'Fluorescent Adolescent' yet again before Turner took over keyboard duties for '505'.

Signing off with 'A Certain Romance' the singer added: "Thank you very much for coming. We should do this every year. We've had good weather, plenty of sunshine and good bands as well."

Arctic Monkeys played:

'Fluorescent Adolescent'

'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'

'Brianstorm'

'Still Take You Home'

'Dancing Shoes'

'From The Ritz To The Rubble'

'Fake Tales Of San Francisco'

'Balaclava'

'Old Yellow Bricks'

'Your Probably Couldn't See Me Because For The Lights But You Were Looking Straight At Me'

'This House Is A Circus'

'Teddy Picker'

'D Is For Danger'

'If You Were There Beware'

'Mardy Bum'

'Do Me A Favour'

'View From The Afternoon'

'When The Sun Goes Down'

'Leave Before The Lights Come On'

'Plastic Tramp'

'505'

'A Certain Romance'

Earlier Supergrass put in another energetic performance, mixing their set up from last night's show with a rare outing for the track 'Sitting Up Staight' and 'Mary' in between new tracks 'Diamond Hoo Ha Man' and 'Rough Knuckles'.

The Coral played exactly the same set list as their first show while Amy Winehouse got the crowd going with her hit single 'Rehab' and The Zutons cover 'Valerie'.

Japanese Beatles cover band The Parrots entertained early revellers arriving on site with the likes of 'I Feel Fine', 'Back In The USSR' and 'Taxman'

Amy's arctic role:

Amy Winehouse played a sensational set supporting the Arctic Monkeys at the Old Trafford cricket ground.

She only arrived on stage with seconds to spare. Still, she had better luck than the Monkeys.

As Alex Turner launched into their hit Balaclava the sound was cut. Unfortunately the boys didn't realise this and carried on playing.

The sound was restored five minutes later - after the song was finished.

A red-faced Alex said: "I was talking to you like Batman and you couldn't hear us. Joke's on me."

Alex's luck didn't get much better. After posing for a pic with a gorgeous female fan, the singer asked for her number.

The girl's pals pointed out she was only 13. Oops!

Poor Alex. :(

The promoters behind Arctic Monkeys' Old Trafford gigs (July 28-29) have responded to criticism from fans about the event's organisation.

While many fans wrote to NME.COM to praise the Sheffield band's performance, a few complained about long queues for the toilets and bars.

Local paperManchester Evening News ran an article yesterday (July 31) detailing some of the problems.

However promoters SJM, who organised the event, have given NME.COM at statement explaining that they tried to deal with the problems after the first gig on July 28.

It reads: "SJM Concerts would like to respond to fans who were unhappy with the facilities at the venue. The main complaints stem from the bar provision on the Saturday concert. The bar operators brought in by the venue are the largest operators in the country who provide bar operations at festivals such as V, T In The Park, Wireless, Isle Of Wight etc and have also covered all the previous concerts at Lancashire Cricket Ground," they explained.

"This year in keeping with the [live] industry's Green Initiative they introduced a cup recycling scheme which took up 20 per-cent of the bar frontage on all these bars. This, however, meant the remaining bar frontage could not cope with the demand for beer at the concert on Saturday. The queues that developed for the bars meant that people could not access certain toilet blocks. Stewards were consequently redeployed to these areas from their normal positions of duty."

SJM explained that they then reacted to these issues in time for the second night (July 29).

"In response to this, overnight the cup recycling scheme was abandoned and converted to bars; therefore each of the three main bars increased in capacity by 20%," they explained.

"Additionally two completely new bars were installed overnight into two new areas and a queuing barrier system was put in place at all bars. In support of this 50 additional toilets were brought in and access to the toilet blocks was improved. 106,000 people came to the concerts over the weekend and whilst we would like to think the gigs were an enormous success we recognise the time taken by a number of fans to bring to our attention their dissatisfaction of the facilities on the Saturday."

The added: "Both Lancashire Cricket Ground and SJM Concerts would like to apologise to fans who did not feel the concert was as enjoyable as it could have been."

Oh my, what a truly awful embarrasing day for him
